With chilly temperatures blowing in Tuesday night, baseball fell to the Belmont Bruins in a midweek game 2-1. Both teams earned 4 hits but Belmont connected a leadoff walk with a double by Drew Ferguson to open the scoring in the third inning. Ferguson would later score on a single up the middle by Matt Beaty. Belmont did not score again for the rest of the game but their pitching kept Lipscomb to only one run which they earned later in the sixth inning. Senior catcher Nick Rome led the Bisons on the night going 2-for-3 with two singles. Although only giving up one earned run, Freshman John Pryor takes the loss on the game. As far as pitching for the Bisons, Coach Jeff Forehand tells Lipscomb Athletics, “Pryor was pretty sharp for the most part. Jamie (Young) came in and got us out of that big jam in the seventh and then Curtis came on and pitched a good eighth and ninth for us.” The Bruins’ hill saw six different pitchers on the day but Chase Cunningham took the win for Belmont. The Bisons head to DeLand, Fla. for a series against Stetson this weekend. The Hatters currently sit at 3-9 in A-Sun play and 14-24 overall. Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

Baseball great Ernie Banks will make his way to campus for the sixth annual Don Meyer Evening of Excellence on April 19. Banks is considered to be one of the great baseball players in Chicago Cubs history and one of the most beloved players in the history of the sport. “The Don Meyer Evening of Excellence has had great guests over the years and we are thrilled to add Ernie Banks’ name to the Lipscomb lineup card,” Athletics Director Philip Hutcheson in a press release from Lipscomb Athletics. “Ernie Banks is one of those ‘Mount Rushmore’ kind of figures when it comes to the world of baseball’s greatest ambassadors.” Hutcheson spoke about Banks’ legacy in the sport and beyond. “Not only was he a Hall of Fame player on the field, but the joy that he brought to the game, the way he connected with his community and the work he did to promote what’s good about sports would have gotten him in Cooperstown even if he never played an inning,” Hutcheson said. Past guests include NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and Coach Meyer himself. Last year, Duck Dynasty family members Phil, Si and Kay Robertson were the centerpieces of the event. Tickets are on sale now for the Saturday event online or by phone at 615-966-4373. It’s the bottom of the ninth inning, the bases are loaded and the game is tied. Or maybe there are five seconds left in the fourth quarter, and the kicker is coming out to give his team the lead. Or perhaps the point guard has the ball in his hands with the final buzzer on the verge of sounding. At the end of a close contest, when an athlete is running on fumes, any edge can make the slightest of difference between winning and losing. If the home team has the privilege of playing in front of a raucous crowd that shakes the stadium, it might be the advantage that provides a victory. The support of fans doesn’t always come to mind before practice, skill and athleticism in the hierarchy of winning attributes for an athletic team, but in a hard fought battle where both teams are evenly matched, a rocking home field advantage could make a huge impact. Lipscomb senior T.J. Ojehomon saw a distinct lack of fan support, especially from students, when he started attending athletic events on campus. Being a former athlete himself, he knew that peers cheering you on while competing can have a crucial impact. Ojehomon also knew that even though his playing days were over, he wanted to make an impact on Lipscomb athletics somehow. Thus, Stampede, Lipscomb’s student fan organization, was born. “My sophomore year I got the opportunity to produce a video in order to promote Running of the Bison,” Ojehomon said. “Then that led to another opportunity to do on-court entertainment, being the guy that gets people involved during media...

You’ll be hearing more than music through the Lumination Radio airwaves this winter. Lipscomb’s official, student-run radio station has partnered with Lipscomb Athletics to broadcast the Lady Bisons basketball home games for the 2013-2014 season. The broadcast feature a play-by-play commentator, a color commentator and a sideline reporter. The broadcast will also consist of people running audio and providing score updates back in the studio at that the radio station, located at the Ezell Center. “We have a play-by-play commentator, a color commentator, a courtside reporter, as well as in-studio analysis by one or two individuals there as well as an audio engineer for the broadcast,” said Lumination Radio Program Director Thomas Jones. “We’re basically just doing a normal broadcast just like you would see on TV, but for radio.” The broadcast team is made up of volunteers from around the department of communication and journalism at Lipscomb. Some of the volunteers include students Monaih Sam, Brittnay Estes, Jesica Parsley, TJ Ojehomon, Charlie Bateman and Brianne Welch. Jones will be joined by senior admissions recruiter and adjunct communications professor Aaron Burtch, who will help the on-air talent with their duties.
