The charges against Lipscomb employee Alex Ross stemming from a March 10 incident at a Nashville bar have been dropped. Ross, Lipscomb’s assistant director of athletics operations, was charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest in the early morning hours of March 10 at the Tin Roof Bar on Demonbreun Street, according a Metro Nashville Police affidavit obtained by Lumination. Both charges were dropped by judge Michael Mondelli at the Davidson County Criminal Court Friday. Lipscomb Vice President of Public Relations Kim Chaudoin did not have an update on Ross’ employment status as of Friday afternoon. He is still listed as an employee on the school’s website. Following the initial arrest, Chaudoin issued a statement saying that Ross had been placed on leave while the university conducted an internal investigation. “Alex Ross is Assistant Director of Operations in the athletics department, which means his primary job duties are to provide lawn maintenance for the grounds and fields, facilities maintenance and setting up equipment for games. “He has been placed on leave pending an investigation. It is our policy for appropriate university officials to conduct an internal investigation and follow through as is consistent with internal policies. As this is an active case, we cannot comment on details of the incident,” Chaudoin said. According to the police affidavit, Ross was kicked out of the bar but refused to leave after security attempted to escort him out. Metro Nashville police officers also asked Ross to leave the premises, but he continued to refuse. Lipscomb women’s soccer defeated Chattanooga 3-0 Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. With this game, the Lady Bisons have played six straight games without giving up a goal against opponents. “I am impressed with the way this team has jelled,” head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “Hopefully they will continue to improve.” Freshman Brooke Brenner scored the only goal for the Bisons in the first half of the 13th minute. The goal was assisted by sophomore Elizabeth Ashwood, who played the ball across the Chattanooga backline. UTC’s Katie Emig made several stops, but Lipscomb continued to aggressively pound the net in the second half. In the 64th minute, senior Caroline Chadwell scored the second goal of the game and was assisted by freshman Maycie McKay. Freshman Lindsay Brent scored the third goal of the game in the 77th minute. Sophomore Emily Rogers assisted the goal. O’Brien said he was very happy with the balance of veteran and young players contributing to the game. “This makes our entire program more competitive,” O’Brien said. “It shows that our players genuinely care about each other and they have a great spirit, which makes it an awesome group to coach.” Lipscomb women’s soccer will take on Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Lipscomb’s volleyball team will begin the quest to improve on last year’s successful season at the season-opening Utah Classic in Salt Lake City this weekend. And the challenge to improve on last season is not an easy one, since the Lady Bisons won the Atlantic Sun Conference and recorded 21 wins and 9 losses, finishing ranked No. 39 at NCAAs a year ago. Having that second best rank in the Lipscomb volleyball program history places a lot of expectations and added pressure to do even better this year, according to some of the freshmen. “There is definitely pressure, the women’s volleyball team has always had a pretty good past, so coming into the season you just have that automatic expectation from the coaches and teammates,” freshman Carlyle Nusbaum said. The Lady Bisons have added six freshmen this year. Carli Anderson, Calayci Coffey, Hannah Hutcheson, Lauren Anderson, Marcella Emmanuelli and Nusbaum were recruited by head coach Brandon Rosenthal, who said all the new players performed at a high level in club and high school volleyball. “They are all very explosive, which suits our game style and program,” Rosenthal said. “They are still very young, so the experience level needs to improve, which will come from playing a lot of matches.” The new players said that in addition to experience, they believe team bonding is essential to success. “We do a lot of team building activities, trying to build close relationships with each other, because that makes such a difference when we play together,” Hutcheson said. “We have worked really hard as a team up until this point just to be competitive with all the different schools...

McCarley Thomas and Mimi Cartwright, both Lipscomb softball stars, share many similarities. The young women were rival pitchers in high school, but at Lipscomb, they play with each other. During their senior year in high school, they pitched against each other in the Region 5-AA semifinals. Cartwright (Goodpasture, 18-4) pitched a two-hitter, struck out 14 and walked none while Thomas (Lipscomb Academy, 10-13) pitched a three-hitter, struck out 15 and walked none in her final high school game. Their positions aren’t their only similarities — both were homecoming queens their senior year and have been roommates at Lipscomb the past two years. “We had a mutual friend who said ‘Hey, ya’ll should room together’ and so we met up and here we are,” Thomas said. Since her time on the high school mound, Cartwright has switched positions and is the Lady Bisons’ starting third baseman. Thomas, standing at 5-11, is listed as the third pitcher in the line-up and has seen action in relief several times this season. While there is sisterhood and similarity, the two have different types of personalities. Cartwright said she loves competition. She said she trives off it, and that is obvious. “When I’m challenged to something I just know that I want to win — like I’m gonna win and that’s all I think about,” Cartwright said. During her time at Goodpasture she also lettered in basketball and is known as a pool shark by her close friends. The Lady Bisons soccer team just completed a record-breaking regular season, and look to take the season even further this weekend. The team finished regular season play Friday Oct. 24 against Northern Kentucky. The game ended in a 2-0 loss, but the team finished with a 10-6-2 overall record, and the no. 2 spot going into the conference tournament. This 2014 season is the first season the Lipscomb women’s team has had a winning record. The Lady Bisons have also only made it into the tournament one other year, and that was last year. A change in coaching staff back in the spring of 2012 is a huge part of the program’s turnaround. Junior Emily Shuler was recruited to Lipscomb before the coaching change, and said she would have looked elsewhere had she been aware of the programs record, but she is thrilled with the change. “When I looked at Lipscomb’s website for them to come watch [me play], I remember their record was like, two wins, maybe. I was like, what am I doing, like why did I ask them to come, and it ended up being awesome,” Shuler said. “Now we’re at a place where we’ve got five times that for wins if not more.” Senior Karli Crosby played on the team before head coach Kevin O’Brien was hired, and she has seen first hand how much of a difference he has made. “We’ve gotten better every single year ever since OB (O’Brien) got here.
