Prude, Talbert compete at NCAA Nationals

Madi Talbert and Gemikal Prude took their talents to Eugene, Oregon, to compete in the NCAA Nationals for track and field. Talbert hit the track on Wednesday in the 3000-meter steeplechase. She finished with a time of 10:13.70, placing her seventh in her heat. Talbert was also named a Second Team All-American. Despite the success, Talbert’s time was not good enough to for the Finals. This was Talbert’s second consecutive appearance at Nationals. She improved on her 2013 time of 10:41.98. Prude, also competing at Nationals for the second straight year, ended his season on Friday attempting to clear a height of 2.05 meters. Despite leaping 2.14 meters in the Eastern Preliminaries, Prude was not able to clear the 2.05 meter bar. Even though Prude did not advance on Friday, he was named an honorable mention All-American. Lippy Awards celebrate 2013-14 season for Lipscomb athletics

Student athletes and coaches filled the court of Allen Arena on Thursday night, but this time, it was not for a game. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the inaugural Lippy Awards in Allen Arena to honor various members of Lipscomb University’s sports teams. The awards show was hosted by student TJ Ojehomon and women’s soccer assistant coach Chris Klotz. Both female and male athletes of the year were competitive categories, but for the female award, sophomore cross country/track and field runner Dani Walker and junior volleyball player Jewell Dobson tied. On the men’s side, track and field high-jumper Gemikal Prude, who broke the high jump record earlier in the year, won as well. Prude said that winning the award was a blessing. “Winning this is quite the blessing,” Prude said. “It’s a feeling that can’t really be described, especially when you feel as if you’re undeserving.” The biggest award of the night, the Best Team Award, went to the women’s track and field/cross country. Senior runner Lacey Printz said that the team worked hard and credited the coaches and team captains for keeping the team focused. “This is the most incredible team we’ve had, and we just love running together and just having fun and doing it for God’s glory,” Printz said. To open the night, the James R. Byers Award was presented to senior track and field sprinter Tucker Peabody, senior volleyball player Caitlin Dotson and junior cross country/track and field runner Tessa Hoefle. The award is given to a top senior athlete who displays outstanding Christian leadership and excels academically and athletically. The honors had...

Kayla Montgomery battles MS to excel in track and cross country

For someone who has not even graduated high school yet, future Bison cross country and track and field athlete Kayla Montgomery has already gained more national media attention than many professional athletes will in over the span of an entire career. Montgomery is a senior at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, N.C who is currently competing in the high school national track championships in New York City alongside hundreds of the best high school track and field athletes from across the country. So what exactly sets her apart from her peers? Montgomery was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis three years ago. Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a disease that disrupts the way the nervous system communicates with the rest of your body, resulting in numerous symptoms including loss of muscle control and numbness of certain body parts. Montgomery has had a successful running career in high school, despite MS causing her legs to go numb during all of her races to the point that she cannot stand on her own once she crosses the finish line. With her success came interest from colleges across the country, including Lipscomb. However, when other schools were hesitant to offer Montgomery a scholarship because of her disease, Lipscomb was more than willing to add her to the Bison team. “Some of it is that we recruit on character and we recruit on academics. We recruit on a lot of different things; it’s not just athletics” said Bill Taylor, Director of Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field at Lipscomb. “She’s a fast runner, but we’re looking for a certain fit for...
