It’s been a week since fall classes started and students are already experiencing changes on Lipscomb’s campus. That includes a new commuter lounge in the Bennett Campus Center. Lipscomb has offered commuters a space for them to work on projects and relax in between classes, but that space has been moved from the Elam Hall basement and into the heart of campus. SGA president Sierra Sparks said the new location will help commuter students connect with the rest of the student body. “Change is something students can adjust to,” Sparks said. “Commuters (need) to feel like they’re a part of things and connect with other students who hang out at the Student Center.” According to Director of Student Involvement Louis Nelms, one of the main reasons the lounge was moved was because the previous location was separate from the rest of the campus. “Moving it to the (Student Center) gave the commuters an opportunity to not feel isolated,” he said. Nelms added that it will give students more “exposure to (residential) students and what’s happening on campus and make them feel like a priority.” Students have already offered their feedback on the new location. Some students have given their appreciation for the effort and the attention given to commuters, while the change has been a hard adjustment for others. The move from Elam, a quiet place with couches and lockers, to a more crowded area has been cause for concern for some students. “It’s more like a study room,” Biology major Tiya Souki said. Other students agreed that the space doesn’t feel like a lounge and believe it needs...

The Lipscomb women’s soccer team found themselves back at Vanderbilt for the Music City Invite on Sunday, where the Bisons played the ACC’s Miami Hurricanes. The game remained scoreless until the last 10 minutes when Miami took the 1-0 win on a goal from junior midfielder Kristina Fisher in the 82nd minute. On Friday night, the Lady Bisons (2-1-1) played to a scoreless, double-overtime draw against Ohio before their loss against the Hurricanes (3-1) on Sunday. The contest was fairly equal and made for a match full of shot opportunities and aggressive defense. The Lady Bisons kept up with Miami’s scoring chances but couldn’t seem to get the ball into the back of the net. Lipscomb coach Kevin O’Brien said that this wasn’t due to his team’s efforts but rather the skill of Miami’s goalkeeper and defenders. “I felt that Miam’s goalkeeper kept them in the game, while (Friday) night it was harder to get through Ohio’s back four,” O’Brien said. “The fact that we are creating chances is what I am happy about.” Locked in a scoreless tie with only 10 minutes left, Miami attempted a few shots on Lipscomb senior goalkeeper Kate Mason. On Miami’s third shot attempt, Fisher slipped the ball past Mason despite the efforts of senior defender Justis Bailey, who nearly saved it. Lipscomb continued to play with high energy despite the late score. Sophomore defender Kaitlin Echols believes that the encouragement from the sideline helped the team stay motivated after Miami’s late goal. “We have a ton of support on the sideline, and we all just picked each other up and realized that it wasn’t...

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team secured a 2-1 victory against the No. 10-ranked Xavier Musketeers at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex Thursday night. This match gave the team its first-ever win against a top-ten team in program history. Xavier began the scoring on a penalty kick in the 20th minute by senior Alex Ridsdale. This would be all Xavier scored during the rest of the game. For Lipscomb, junior Daniel Vieira scored the first goal in the 23rd minute followed by 25-yard goal from sophomore Ivan Alvarado in the 27th minute. Lipscomb entered the second half with strong defense as Xavier fought for control of the ball. While Xavier had many opportunities during the second half, the team failed to capitalize when it mattered most. “We challenge our players’ skills and we specifically challenge their mentality,” head coach Charles Morrow said. “I thought our players’ responses tonight were world-class.” Later in the second half, a red card was thrown on behalf of sophomore midfielder Jonathon Ramirez of Lipscomb and Matt Nance of Xavier; the two were ejected from the game. “I did not think it was a very physical game,” Morrow said. “It was an emotional game. Quite honestly, I thought the referees got a little too caught up in the emotion of the game, though I will need to look back at the film.” With 24 minutes left in the game, a weather delay paused play for several minutes. Sophomore midfielder Eduardo Reza later preserved the Bisons victory in the 83rd minute after he intercepted a kick with his head. Staying true to yourself and your values can be difficult for anyone — a fact addressed at “Live Original LIVE,” hosted by Duck Dynasty’s Sadie Robertson. The event, based around themes of Robertson’s book “Live Original,” was held in Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena on Saturday, Aug. 29 and included inspirational speeches, skits and music performances. “What Live Original is all about, that is what we’re doing tonight, teaching you to go outside of your comfort zone,” Robertson said. “Don’t be afraid, be confident in your schools, through your trials, in the community, in the world, and in your relationships.” Speakers included Robertson’s brother John Luke and sister-in-law Mary Kate, boyfriend Blake Coward, The Bachelor couple Sean and Catherine Lowe, Max and Bonnie Kate Zoghbi, with musical performances by for KING & COUNTRY and Reed Robertson. Amidst the excitement and entertainment were serious and meaningful discussions, such as the Zoghbi’s speaking out about the 2012 Aurora Colorado shooting, which Bonnie Kate was a victim of. “I’m telling you guys this story just to tell of God’s faithfulness and how He’s so good and uses even the darkest things to grow us and shape us,” said Zoghbi, as she spoke of the events of the shooting and the ways in which she has grown afterward. Zoghbi’s filmaker husband Max, who received a lot of attention for his elaborate wedding proposal, spoke about the importance of perspective in living originally in trials and suffering. “For us that looks like finding perspective in your story through suffering because everyone suffers,” he said. “It looks like finding that perspective and relying on God to give you joy...
