After sitting out of basketball for a season, Lipscomb redshirt sophomore Ashley Southern is back on the court and making a statement. Originally from Tuscumbia, Ala., Southern began playing recreation basketball at the age of 6 at the request of her best friend. “She begged me to play with her, so I played. Her dad was the coach,” Southern said. “I was terrible. I scored for the other team.” Southern has come a long way since those rec ball days. She played basketball and volleyball in high school and received many accolades including three-time All-State, All-County, All-Area and All-Region selections for basketball. Southern also scored 2,267 career points in high school. Southern received the Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week award earlier this season and is already a top scorer and rebounder for the Lady Bisons, with more than 50 points and 48 rebounds. Even so, Southern doesn’t like to talk about her individual achievements. “I’m not one of these people that really cares about personal awards,” Southern said. “Like, honestly, I just want us to win some games.” Southern is a redshirt sophomore because she transferred into Lipscomb from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga last season, and, through NCAA rules, was required to sit out for the 2012-13 season. “When I got to Chattanooga it was just a whole different atmosphere than what I thought it was going to be, and I wasn’t happy,” Southern said. “Lipscomb recruited me out of high school, so I got in touch with Coach Bennett and decided to transfer here.” Former Lady Bison head coach Frank Bennett originally recruited Southern to...

You’ll be hearing more than music through the Lumination Radio airwaves this winter. Lipscomb’s official, student-run radio station has partnered with Lipscomb Athletics to broadcast the Lady Bisons basketball home games for the 2013-2014 season. The broadcast feature a play-by-play commentator, a color commentator and a sideline reporter. The broadcast will also consist of people running audio and providing score updates back in the studio at that the radio station, located at the Ezell Center. “We have a play-by-play commentator, a color commentator, a courtside reporter, as well as in-studio analysis by one or two individuals there as well as an audio engineer for the broadcast,” said Lumination Radio Program Director Thomas Jones. “We’re basically just doing a normal broadcast just like you would see on TV, but for radio.” The broadcast team is made up of volunteers from around the department of communication and journalism at Lipscomb. Some of the volunteers include students Monaih Sam, Brittnay Estes, Jesica Parsley, TJ Ojehomon, Charlie Bateman and Brianne Welch. Jones will be joined by senior admissions recruiter and adjunct communications professor Aaron Burtch, who will help the on-air talent with their duties. The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has officially released their 2013-2014 schedule, which includes a December trip up to Knoxville to take on the Lady Volunteers. Nine of the teams in Lipscomb’s schedule are post season teams from last year. “We have set up a challenging schedule for our team,” Brown told Lipscomb Athletics. “It will give us some experiences in great environments while preparing us for the Atlantic Sun season.” To start the year, Lipscomb’s Women’s basketball team is scheduled to play in two exhibition games against Freed-Hardeman (Oct. 28) and Fisk (Nov. 6). The Lady Bisons jump into the regular season against Morehead State on Nov. 10. This year’s installment of the Battle of the Boulevard is set for Nov. 14 at Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons will look to avenge their 70-54 home loss to Belmont from last year. The Lady Bisons are also set to play three SEC powerhouses this seasons. They play Kentucky in Lexington on Nov. 21. Less than a month later, the team returns to Athens, Ga., to take on the Lady Bulldogs again this year on Dec. 17. Lipscomb then travels to Rocky Top to face Tennessee, a team that the Lady Bisons have never played, on Dec. 29. “It is always great to play the Kentucky’s and the Tennessee’s. They are great models of excellence and where we are working to get to,” Brown said. The team start their conference play in Johnson City, Tenn., against ETSU on Jan. 2. Here are some newsworthy links making their way around campus this week. ACADEMICS The Andrews Institute’s Leadership Tennesee program has announced its first students. A variety of camps are being hosted over the summer at Lipscomb. ATHLETICS Baseball player Hunter Brothers was recently drafted in the MLB Draft’s 24th round by the Colorado Rockies. Madi Talbert was recently named honorable mention All-America for her accomplishments. The women’s basketball team has added a new transfer student from the University of Florida to the program. Cheerleading tryouts will be held on August 20. Construction has begun for a new golf short-game facility in Brentwood for the men’s and women’s golf teams. Five have joined the men’s soccer team. The men’s and women’s track and field teams have announced their team awards for the season. Five members of the track and field team will be competing in the U.S.A.
