Cross country team focuses on ‘family’ rather than prize

Students who visit Bill Taylor’s office know the veteran cross country coach is proud of his job and his students. “The character of Lipscomb University, the environment, the Christian emphasis, the character of the kids is different than other schools, especially at the Division I level,” Taylor said. “And that’s by far the greatest part of coaching here:  We can glorify Christ and I get good kids with good character.” Taylor, who has coached the team four years, explains that all the athletes set goals — both as individuals and as team members — to run to the best of their ability. “Our goal is to be as good as we can be, and give ourselves the chance for a conference title,” Taylor said. “We talk lightly about a conference championship, but it’s not like we have to win.” Taylor said that most girls who have been on the cross-country team for more than a year have dropped from one to three minutes off of their times on the 5K run. Jenny Randolph, a senior biology major and captain of the women’s cross-country team, said she appreciates Taylor’s coaching. “Coach Taylor knows how to structure workouts to be most beneficial to each individual and always, always pushes us to run to the best of our ability,” Randolph said. “He believes in us, even when we don’t believe in ourselves.” Randolph has been running cross-country since middle school. “On my recruiting visit, I was struck by how close the team was, and I wanted to be a part of that,” Randolph said. Randolph values the family atmosphere fostered by the members...

Students disagree on whether to get their flu shots

Students have mixed opinions on whether to get the flu shot when Lipscomb opens its clinic Tuesday in the Bennett Campus Center The university is urging students and faculty to get the shot, by posting the following message on its website: “This year, the CDC is recommending that everyone 6 months and older get flu shots. Protection against the H1N1 virus will be included in this year’s seasonal vaccines.” The combination seasonal flu and swine flu in vaccination doesn’t bother Leanne Wright, a junior nursing major from Cincinnati, Ohio. “I’ll get a flu shot. I’ll get the piggy shot. Put it all in me,” Wright said. “Flu shots work, but not for all people.” Sarah Bailey, a junior marketing major from Philadelphia, Pa., said she agrees with the school’s stance on the shots. But not everyone is so eager. “I don’t feel that they are necessary,” said Joseph Cardiasmenos, a senior psychology major from Cincinnati, Ohio. “Since I’m young, my immune system can fight off [the flu] on its own.” Jamie Good, a junior exercise major from Cincinnati said she probably won’t get the shot. “I got one last year and I still got the flu,” Good said. Physicians have said that while the flu shot won’t prevent a person from getting ill, it will lessen the wallop of the ailment. Some students said that the shot actually can make a person ill.  This, according to a statement posted on the web site of the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, is the No. 1 misconception about the vaccinations: “The influenza viruses contained in a flu shot are inactivated (killed), which...

Lipscomb bass fishermen reel in honor, advance to televised Orlando competion

Hooking a bass just minutes before the end of competition was enough to send Lipscomb’s fishing club to the nationally televised competition this month in Orlando. The two Lipscomb fishermen qualified for that regional competition – and a shot at qualifying for the nationals — by placing in the top five at a bass club fishing event last week in Alabama. James Crague, junior in corporate management, and Bobby Blackwell, junior in accounting, earned their first-ever top 10 finish and qualified for the regionals at the National Guard FLW College Fishing Southeast Division event. Crague said that their success at the event was due to Blackwell’s ability to catch their final fish only 30 minutes before the competition’s end. “It was our last chance to qualify,” Crague said. “Barely squeaked into the regional thanks to some last minute heroics from Bobby.” “You receive money for your club and for your school,” Crague said, noting the club took home a $2,000 prize. The regional competition will be held in Orlando, Fla., on Oct. 21-23 and will be televised on Versus at noon on Nov. 21. According to Blackwell, the team’s plan for regionals is simple: “go out there and fish the best we can, make top five and go to nationals.” Crague said he was extremely nervous about the event but is aware of the possible rewards. “It’s on TV,” he said. “To be part of that is pretty gratifying.” Blackwell and Crague began fishing together after they met during their freshman year of college, but they didn’t begin competing until this year. In January, they developed Lipscomb’s bass fishing...
