The 2012 Country Music Awards wasn’t just for recognizing country music stars. Lipscomb’s own Caitlin Selle was honored with the 2012 CMA Close Up Award of Merit backstage at the show. The award was created in 2007 to honor the student journalist or photojournalist who demonstrated the most creativity, dedication, and promise in covering the CMA Music Festival on assignment from CMA. This was the second year Selle, a junior, interned for CMA. She was selected among nine others to be on the “Team of Merit.” The CMA staff voted on which intern from the team had the best work, and the staff chose Selle’s work over all of the others. Bob Doerschuk, editor of CMA Close Up, presented her with the award during the backstage press conference coverage of the 46th Annual CMA Awards on Thursday, Nov. 1, at Bridgestone Arena. After the press conference, Selle said she was asked to stay and cover the event for CMA. “CMA is proud to foster up-and-coming music journalists and photojournalists by offering them the tools and opportunities to hone their skills,” said Wendy Pearl, CMA Vice President of Corporate Communications. “Caitlin has solid journalistic skills, with plenty of impressive clips in her catalog,” said Doerschuk. “And as a photographer, she shows a rare gift for capturing everyday images, whether of live music or quiet landscapes, with originality and poetic sensibility. Coaches, players, cheerleaders, fans – it’s time for Battle of the Boulevard. Nov. 9 marks the 131st rivalry game between the Lipscomb Bisons and Belmont Bruins men’s basketball teams. The game takes place Friday night in Allen Arena at 6:30 p.m. There’s a lot of history between the two schools, dating back to Dec. 11, 1953 – the first time the schools faced off. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that an actual rivalry was born with coaches Don Meyer (Lipscomb) and Rick Byrd (Belmont). Lipscomb currently leads Belmont 73-57 in the series. Louis Nelms, the director of student involvement, has been to eight “battles” so far. “My favorite part of the Battle of the Boulevard would be the environment,” Nelms said. “As a small school, our athletic teams often don’t get the kind of support or attention that other schools that are maybe in bigger conferences do. The Battle of the Boulevard is one of the few experiences where Lipscomb gets to feel a little bit different than usual.” Nelms said that while this specific game may not be as big of an event as other collegiate sporting rivalries, the Battle of the Boulevard still deserves national attention. “We are playing a team that is consistently getting national attention, and it is fun to have a real rival,” Nelms said. “It’s not Duke vs. UNC or Alabama vs. Auburn, but it is one of the best sporting events in the country because it is one of those games where the records are thrown out and anyone can win.” How deep is the rivalry now compared to years before? A Lipscomb Academy student has accomplished something very few nationwide can claim: a perfect SAT score. Han Na Kim, a senior, was born in Korea and has been at Lipscomb Academy for seven years. Kim took the SAT in February and scored a 2180. She and her parents thought she could earn a better score, so she bought a study guide and took practice tests. “Every time I sit down to crack a book or take a test, I pray,” Kim said. “I’m not doing this for myself or my parents; academia is an area I can honor God with and studying here in America is a huge blessing.” She took the SAT for the second time in October, this time earning a perfect 2400. In 2012, 1.6 million students nationwide sat down to take the nearly 4-hour exam that tests aptitude in mathematics, science and reading. Only 360 students earned a perfect 2400. Kim said when she saw her scores she was in disbelief. “It just doesn’t seem real, I have had this burden of trying to figure out how to pay for college, and now I feel like I can apply and have a chance at a prestigious school. I know this is one of the ways God is providing for me.” Kim, who earned a nearly perfect 35 on the ACT and is enrolled in two advanced placement courses and a dual enrollment class through Lipscomb University, said she is undecided on a college, though she is leaning toward education as a major. “Han Na Kim is a motivated, dedicated, intelligent and involved young lady,” said Kristi Reynolds, Lipscomb Academy chemistry teacher. “I have had the privilege of teaching...

President Barack Obama has been re-elected to a second term in office after months of campaigning, defeating his Republican opponent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney in a close election. After winning in important swing states like Ohio, Wisconsin and Colorado, the president passed the 270 Electoral College vote mark that would confirm his re-election. Obama also carried Electoral College vote-heavy states like California, New York and Pennsylvania. Obama also surprised the nation by claiming toss-up state Virginia. Florida also leans in the president’s direction, with votes still being tallied as of this morning. Romney won by a large margin in Tennessee (although Obama carried Davidson County), alongside states like Texas, North Carolina, Georgia and Indiana. President Obama also led the popular vote. In his concession speech, Gov. Romney congratulated the president and wished him well in the years ahead. “This is a time of great challenges for America, and I pray that the president will be successful in guiding our nation,” Romney said. Romney also used his final address as a presidential candidate to lament his wishes to the future of the nation. “The nation, as you know, is at a critical point. At a time like this, we can’t risk partisan bickering and political posturing,” Romney said. “Our leaders have to reach across the aisle to do the people’s work. And we citizens also have to rise to the occasion.” In his acceptance speech, President Obama thanked his supporters for their efforts that secured his re-election.
