Lipscomb freshmen can begin attending Freshmen Interest Groups to help them get connected on campus, starting Wednesday, Jan. 18. A Freshmen Interest Group (FIG) allows those newer to Lipscomb to connect with other students who share in the same interests. All freshmen are welcome to attend any meetings available. Six different interest groups will be featured. Those with a knack for service can meet with Christin Shatzer on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Johnson conference room to join the community service/service learning FIG. This group also offers opportunities with the SALT program. Students looking for recreational activities can meet with Matthew Abplanalp in the Student Activity Center lobby at 4 p.m. Wednesday to join the Campus Rec FIG, aimed at promoting healthy living. Also on Wednesday at 4 p.m., those with a love for travel can meet Melissa Swan in Arlo’s to discuss world-wide exploration with the travel FIG. On Thursday at 3 p.m., Campus Minister Jake Burton will lead the spiritual FIG in the Campus Ministry office. This group will take a closer look at God’s work on campus and address spiritual questions. Any film buffs can join Dr. Matt Hearn in Swang 102 on Thursday at 5 p.m. to discuss the art of cinema with the movies/film FIG. Those with a love of the culinary arts can meet with Dr. Autumn Marshall at 3 p.m. Friday in Ezell 107 to delve into the world of good food with the culinary/food FIG. Fall is full swing as we enter the first week of October. This is the month when horror/thriller films are at their peak. While we don’t have any scary flicks to recommend today, here are two solid films for your enjoyment! X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (PG-13, 130 minutes-featuring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) *BLU-RAY OPTION RECOMMENDED The film will be on Redbox this Friday (10/7). The X-Men franchise is back in full swing with this electrifying prequel. This film follows the beginning days of the X-Men, telling the stories of Charles Xavier, a young, gifted professor and Eric Lensherr, a revenge-driven survivor of the Holocaust. The two mutants are brought together when a power force threatens the fate of the world. Assembling the finest mutants they can find, Charles and Eric take on the menace in this past summer’s best blockbuster film (in my opinion). McAvoy and Fassbender truly knock their performances out of the park. This is an immensely fun, engaging, stylish superhero film that I fully recommend for your viewing pleasure. It’s one of my favorites of the year, and I hope it’s one of yours. BATTLE: LOS ANGELES (PG-13, 116 minutes-featuring Aaron Eckhart) *BLU-RAY OPTION RECOMMENDED Here’s another title that has been on Redbox for a while, but it’s still worth a rental. Battle: Los Angeles is a straight-forward alien invasion film told through the eyes of the soldiers combatting the enemy. REDBOX REPORT (September 13th-19th) As September gives us new weather and an onslaught of sinus infections (seriously…is everyone sick?), here are a few recommendations to consider before you make your trip to the Redbox. THOR (PG-13, 114 minutes-featuring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkins) *BLU-RAY OPTION (If you own a Blu-Ray player/PS3, I’d totally suggest going for the extra fifty cents on this title.) If you are one of the few people who have not yet paid a visit to Asgard, then I’d suggest you go ahead and do so. Thor was one of the summer’s best blockbusters, mixing in a smart script, some great acting, a few moments of humor, and some great action sequences. Hemsworth owned the role of Thor, and Hiddleston made for a wonderful Loki. If you have any desire to be ready for when The Avengers make their mark next summer, then I’d wholeheartedly recommend Thor. It’s a fun ride, and for a dollar, it’s worth every penny. SOURCE CODE (PG-13, 93 minutes-featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright) *BLU-RAY OPTION RECOMMENDED This film has been out for a while now, but if you haven’t yet picked it up, it’s a must. The film could almost be considered a distant cousin of Inception. I won’t spoil anything here, but if you enjoyed Inception (which is nearly everyone who saw it), then you would enjoy Source Code-hands down. I think it’s safe to say the day of the video store has sadly come to an end. While I always enjoyed looking around a Blockbuster from time to time, I must admit the convenience of a Redbox is a nice luxury to have, especially as a college student. The one-dollar a night rental service hosts many new releases every week, and on occasion, will bring back an older movie for good measure. Redbox machines are located all over the Middle Tennessee area. As long as you don’t forget to turn your movie back the next day, Redbox is a wonderful, inexpensive way to find enjoyment during the down-time of college. But don’t you just hate it when you Redbox a movie that really isn’t to your liking? It may be just a dollar wasted, but these days, a dollar wasted is exactly that. I’ve decided to contribute a weekly REDBOX REPORT that highlights one or two new releases that gain the full approval of my cinematic taste. And trust me, I have good taste. So before you make a trip to the Redbox this week, check out these recommendations.
