Rumor has it, before High Rise’s water problem on Thursday that classes have not been cancelled for a non-weather related event in over 30 years! During the news meeting on Friday, Lumination Network staff compiled a Top 10 list a la David Letterman. Staff members Emily Snell, Hunter Patterson, Whitney Jarreld, Nicci Carney and Cory Woodroof all contributed to the list below. 10. Announced to campus school students Friday morning, the campus school will be renamed Lipscomb Academy. The change will take effect on June 1. Rumored for more than a year, the name change became official with an email from university president Randy Lowry. The reasons behind the change as Lowry put it, “the campus school has grown so much in quality, reputation and capability over the past few years, that it has already become a school of exceptional accomplishment at the highest levels and has earned the “academy” moniker, one generally reserved for top-tier independent schools.” The rest of letter reads as follows: Celebrate! will take place in Allen Arena Saturday night with 600 members of the Lipscomb community planning to attend, and I am excited to be involved in this milestone event in the history of Lipscomb. I wanted to share this letter from President Lowry as advance notification of information that will be shared with those who are attending. We want everyone in the Lipscomb family to be aware even if you are not able to attend. A similar letter is being mailed to families, alumni, and friends of Lipscomb today. With some musician friends in town for the week, I knew I’d be in charge of entertaining. Entertaining means late nights for me. I don’t do late nights well with my class schedule, but sometimes you’ve got to step out of the box and have some fun. We all went to this great little hidden restaurant called City House in Germantown. There were about 15 of us all gathered around this long table situated in the middle of the main dining floor. We jumped at the chance to order one big dinner that we would all share. After 30 seconds of contemplation we ordered 10 pizzas consisting of zucchini, hot sauce, pork and cheese. We also got five bowls of fried octopus and calamari. I know, gross! Actually, though, it was really good. The owner cooked in the kitchen, which was open for everyone on the main dining floor to see. After we ate, we sat there for about 10 minutes holding our stomachs and talking about how amazing the food was. My friend was boasting about how amazing City House was because he picked it. We nodded in sarcastic agreement. We were too stuffed to argue. After dinner, we got a few taxis into town to find a spot to hang out away from the country bars and restaurants downtown. I’m not much of a “hang out in a crowd and get pushed around” type of girl. Nor do I like having to scream at my friend to have a conversation. Around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, the High Rise dormitory on Lipscomb’s campus was evacuated after a pipe had burst on the first floor. As of 7:47 a.m., High Rise has reopened to residents. All classes at the university are cancelled until this evening. The 5:00 p.m. block of classes will take place as scheduled. President Dr. Randolph Lowry says he was informed of the situation around 3:30 this morning. “I am so pleased how our campus has responded to it,” Lowry said. “This is a very complex campus. Students have been great. Very sorry to mess up their night, but we will have free Starbucks in the campus center for all High Rise residents.” “The key administrators were here quickly,” he said, “and we believe we have covered the contingencies and will be back to normal shortly.” From Lipscomb’s main website: Update 6:25 a.m. At 1:45 a.m. this morning a water pipe near High Rise Dormitory ruptured and has affected water service to parts of campus and will continue to do so at points during the day as we work to resolve the issue. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. For the safety and comfort of our students we are making the following accommodations: University classes are cancelled until 5 p.m. Evening classes will take place as scheduled. High Rise residents will be able to retrieve necessary belongings on an escorted and as-needed basis. Faculty/Staff offices are open. Employees are to report to work as usual.
