In the sixth week of the 2013-2014 school year, Madeline Smith and Joe Sanderson are behind the news desk to update you about what is happening on campus and around the Nashville community. Regardless of where they are in their academic careers, Lipscomb students now have the option to not include a minor in graduation plans. Lipscomb announced to students Friday, Sept. 20, that a minor would no longer be a requirement to graduate, but the 126-hour minimum is still in effect. Dr. Randy Bouldin, the Associate Provost for Academic Development, said the process began about a year and a half ago when the academic leadership team looked at other schools for guidelines and decided what would be the best for students. “We voted to do away with the minor requirement for graduation, but we had to decide how we were going to implement it,” Bouldin said. “There were several options we could have taken. We could have said this was only going to apply to incoming freshman next year, or implement it in the spring.” Ultimately the decision was made to let the new criteria apply to every student. “We have not eliminated the possibility of a minor,” Bouldin said. “But now a student has more options.” The goal of this new system is to let students customize their course load to a greater extent. “You have the capacity now to use those hours in ways that might be better than if you had to choose an 18-hour minor,” Bouldin said. This new “flexibility,” as Bouldin calls it, lets students do their own academic programming. He points out that an education is a huge investment and university leaders want students to get the most out it. For 15 years now, the words “Google it!” have been on the mouths of people searching for a quick answer. Google has been playing a huge role on the Internet and in the lives of people who use it. In honor of Google’s 15th birthday, Google Student Ambassador Karla Chavez will be throwing a party on Friday, Sept. 27. Chavez is a Public Relations major and the first and only Google Student Ambassador on Lipscomb’s campus. She became involved with the Google Student Ambassador program through a mentor. “I applied for their program and was accepted in July,” Chavez said. During the Google birthday celebration, Chavez will have a few Google products for students to test out, including the Nexus 7 and the Chromebook. “This will be the first event I’ve done on campus. I really want to build a Google culture on campus,” Chavez said. “I want to make sure that students are aware of the Apps that we have through Google for Lipscomb. “I want them to learn how to use the products and also show them the right tools on how they could apply for the Ambassador program one day, too. I want students to be able to have the same opportunities as I have had. “Ultimately, the goal of the event is for students to meet their Google Student Ambassador,” Chavez said. “And for students and their clubs to learn how they can benefit from using Google products.” Chavez said that the Nexus 7 is her favorite Google product. “I can get books through Google Play and they are less expensive than going to the...

Another round of performers and presenters are set for the 2013 Dove Awards, which are set to take place in at Allen Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The line-up of performers continues to grow with the addition of Big Daddy Weave, Captial Kings, Colton Dixon, Jason Crabb, Kristian Stanfill, Rhett Walker Band and Tasha Cobbs. These artists will perform alongside the previously announced artists Gaither Vocal Band, Michael W. Smith, Tamela Mann and TobyMac. New presenters Brandon Heath, Candace Cameron Bure, David Mann, Joyce Meyer and Montell Jordan have been added to the show in addition to previously announced presenters Dr. Bobby Jones, Isaac Carree, Jaci Velasquez, Lecrae and Pastor Rick Warren. Former Dove New Artist of the Year winners Jamie Grace and Chris August will be hosting the pre-show ceremony. The pre-show takes place 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and can be streamed, along with the Dove Cares Red Carpet, at www.hearitfirst.com/live.
