Newby takes top honor with cross country Runner of the Week award

MACON, Ga. – Lipscomb’s freshman runner, Alex Newby earned her first Atlantic Sun Runner of the Week award, as announced by the league office on Wednesday, after she set a personal record of 18:56.27 at the Vermont Invitational 5K. Newby paced Lipscomb to a second-place finish at the meet by crossing the finish line in eighth, only four seconds behind the meet winner. Kappa Iota Theta, new name for multicultural growth

Kappa Iota Theta – formerly known as Lipscomb University Multicultural Association (LUMA) – is offering more opportunities to get involved in the Nashville community this semester as well as creating ideas which reflect its new motto, “connecting intercultural ties.” Kappa Iota Theta begins this semester with the goal of uniting a diverse student body.  Elizabeth Hayes, organization president, said its goal is to “educate students and the community about the different ethnicities here on campus.” The organization is most known for the International Square affair, which takes place during spring semester, which allows students to experience the customs and foods of other cultures. Kappa Iota Theta also hosted its One Mic Stand last semester in Shamblin Theater. “It is important for students to learn and enhance their cultural diversity by building relationships with people of another culture,” Hayes said. Lumination hosts student media workshop

This Saturday, the department of communication and journalism will be hosting an introduction to its student-produced media network, Lumination Network, for those students interested in journalism, writing stories, photography, or shooting/editing video. We’ll provide doughnuts, water and an introduction to how you can become involved in campus student media. The workshop is this Saturday, September 18, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Mullican TV Studio Newsroom of Ezell Center (first floor).  The purpose of this workshop is to get students plugged into the network and for students to begin working with our staff. The day will begin with an general introduction about Lumination by its editor-in-chief, Kate Keith. Then students will breakout into 30-minute sessions on writing, photography, video shooting and video editing. Journalist-in-residence Tim Ghianni will be teaching students how to tell stories, and Tennessean photographer John Partipillo will lead the session on photography. Jake Morgan, Lipscomb alum currently working with the department of communication and journalism, will show students how to shoot video, and Lumination’s mulitmedia editor Ryan Malone will teach students how to edit video content using the ProTools suite.
