It almost felt like two separate games for the Lady Bisons basketball team in their 86-79 loss at home to the Murray State Racers on Saturday. In the first half, sloppy play, fouls and turnovers were the story. Murray State had 13 fouls and 6 turnovers, while the Lady Bisons had 11 fouls and 7 turnovers in the first twenty minutes of action. In the second half, the Lady Bisons surged back from being down by 16 points at one point, and with the help of a Chandler Cooper three-point shot, Lipscomb tied the game at 56. However, the Racers pulled away in the closing minutes with the aid of free throws and missed Lipscomb shots to hold on for the victory. Head coach Greg Brown said that in the second half, the team did make improvements. “We did a better job of getting the ball inside, [getting] drives and cuts right there,” Brown said. “I thought we did a better job of executing that part of the game.” Junior Sara Bliss led the Lady Bisons in scoring with 22, 12 of those points from the arc. Redshirt sophomore Ashley Southern picked up a double-double for the game. She scored 20 points and led the team in rebounds with 15. “My teammates were just looking for me inside in the second half, sending me the ball. [It] helped a lot,” Southern said. “We played really well today. Service and learning can go hand-in-hand, and a group of 31 Lipscomb biology students are combining their academics with service to meet the needs of a Nashville-based, not-for-profit organization. Students in Dr. James English’s freshmen-level environmental biology course are working in conjunction with the Nashville Food Project to implement an irrigation plan for the organization’s Wedgewood garden. The class visited the garden a couple times at the beginning of the semester to evaluate the land structure before devoting the fall months to creating the land management plan. “The property is on a slight-gradient, so what you do is collect the water and bring that rain water up so that you can use it to flow down,” second-year Yellow Ribbon student Christopher Long said. “It’s kind of an intricate system, but it’s completely sustainable. “Basically, we use mother nature to sustain the garden.” Jamie Wilkerson, the class communications manager for the irrigation plan, is designing the irrigation system to pump water from the 5,000 gallon tank to the piping system, providing water to the garden. “It is awesome to have a class with an actual real life application,” Wilkerson said. “It has [provided] drive and interest.” The irrigation system is designed to use rain water, implementing a sustainable practice that has been around for generations. Wilkerson said he hopes the irrigation system will help the Nashville Food Project with their upcoming spring crops. “Our proposal is very detailed and has everything outlined down to the smallest materials needed to complete the project,” Wilkerson said. “I find this super exciting because we have created something that, if used, should work perfectly.” The...

For this year’s Lighting of the Green concert, Amy Grant will be bringing along plenty of friends for a night of Christmas joy. On Tuesday, Dec. 3, Grant will be joined by Nicole C. Mullen, Brenda Lee, Ben Rector, Nashville‘s Lennon & Maisy, David Phelps and Hymns for Hunger & Friends (feat. Cindy Morgan and Andrew Greer), as well as a few of campus’ student choruses. The free concert begins on the Allen Arena Mall at 5:30 p.m., while other festivities will begin at 4 p.m. If there is rain, the event will be moved into Allen Arena. You’ll be hearing more than music through the Lumination Radio airwaves this winter. Lipscomb’s official, student-run radio station has partnered with Lipscomb Athletics to broadcast the Lady Bisons basketball home games for the 2013-2014 season. The broadcast feature a play-by-play commentator, a color commentator and a sideline reporter. The broadcast will also consist of people running audio and providing score updates back in the studio at that the radio station, located at the Ezell Center. “We have a play-by-play commentator, a color commentator, a courtside reporter, as well as in-studio analysis by one or two individuals there as well as an audio engineer for the broadcast,” said Lumination Radio Program Director Thomas Jones. “We’re basically just doing a normal broadcast just like you would see on TV, but for radio.” The broadcast team is made up of volunteers from around the department of communication and journalism at Lipscomb. Some of the volunteers include students Monaih Sam, Brittnay Estes, Jesica Parsley, TJ Ojehomon, Charlie Bateman and Brianne Welch. Jones will be joined by senior admissions recruiter and adjunct communications professor Aaron Burtch, who will help the on-air talent with their duties. The game started with an 8-0 run by Belmont, and Talbott Denny scored the first points for the Bisons with a three. With 14:37 left in the first half, the lead was in favor of the Bruins, 15-6. By halftime, their lead had increased to 47-26. A steal and breakaway layup from the Bruins’ J.J. Mann gave Belmont the momentum heading into the the half. Malcolm Smith opened the second half with six consecutive points for the Bisons. However, any momentum gained from Smith’s run was erased with a two-handed slam from the Bruins’ Craig Bradshaw to make the score 58-34. Belmont would later seal its second ‘Battle’ win of the season. “They were a significantly better team than they were the first time that we played,” Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander said. The down-the-street rivals last played Nov. 8, a game that Belmont won, 87-83. “Belmont’s such a rhythm team, and when things are going their way, they’re literally about as good as anybody,” Alexander said. The loss for the Bisons dropped their record to 2-3 on the season. Malcolm Smith stepped up for the Bisons, nearly posting a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds. J.C.
