Bison Week is once again upon us, leading us up to the biggest game of the season: the Battle of the Boulevard. “Bison week is an opportunity for students to build up the excitement for one of Lipscomb’s most epic events: Battle of the Boulevard,” said Stampede president TJ Ojehomon. Here’s a look at what you can look forward to this week. Monday: The HoopapaLUza pep rally will take place in Allen Arena at 9 p.m. The event will feature the Lipscomb Bisons basketball team and many prizes will be given out. The pep rally is also important for students because it’s where you can get your tickets to Friday’s Lipscomb vs. Belmont game. Tuesday: Movie night will start at 7 p.m. in Zebi’s lounge. They will be showing V for Vendetta, since it’s conveniently November the 5th. Wednesday: Wednesday Night We Eat will start in High Rise at 10 p.m. This week’s event will feature music from DJ Cottrill and also a push cart derby that starts at 11 p.m. Barbeque pork sandwiches will be served. Thursday: The annual Running of the Bison will start in Bison Square at 9 p.m. It’s a Lipscomb tradition that goes back many years to lead up to the final event. This week’s basketball exhibition games filled Allen Arena with the sounds of cheering fans, slick sneakers on the hardwood and plenty of booming buzzers. Through all the noise and confusion that accompanies live sports, the pep band is usually the one providing the structured soundtrack to the evening. “Emphasis on musicality,” said Elliot Bowman, Lipscomb’s pep band director for the year. “Instead of being a really loud band, we want to be able to hear all the parts, all the instruments. Each instrument does have an important role in each song we play and we want that to be showcased.” The conglomeration of trumpets, drums, flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trombones, a piccolo and a bass guitar bring together the best of wind and jazz instruments. “We don’t have any tuba players this semester but I’d love to have anybody that wants to play one,” Bowman said. Coming off the Bisons and Lady Bisons exhibition games, the pep band is ready to begin a new season. Bowman said the band isn’t just a way to showcase students’ musical talent, but a way to be more involved in the games and support Lipscomb athletics. “In the past, while [band members have] shown moderate interest, they’ve not been shouting with the cheerleaders and trying to help out like a normal student would,” Bowman said. “We’ll put a little bit of emphasis on that.” Jennifer Green, Bowman’s co-assistant, is looking forward to making the pep band a vital part of the game’s atmosphere. “We used to be a really small group that didn’t have much school spirit,” Green said. “Now, we have grown exponentially and...

Lipscomb Dining may not be promoting any new restaurants or redesigns for the fall semester, but a few developments here and there have solidified the idea that campus’ dining department is always open to change. Dining General Manager Wolcott Fary says that not much is different at the Bennett Campus Center food court this semester, but he did have a few updates to share. For example, popular dining spot Far East Fusion has undergone a few adjustments. “It used to be that they would pack everything into a bowl, stick it in the window and that would be it,” Fary said. Fary said that he supplied Far East Fusion with new steam equipment to freshen the food. He also explained that the restaurant will now serve fresh food, and the students can order what they want. Because of this change, business for Far East Fusion has doubled, according to Fary. While Blue Coast Burrito and Papa John’s have only utilized occasional specials, Chick-fil-A has added new salads. But, one item that won’t be arriving at Chick-fil-A anytime soon are the legendary milkshakes. Fary said that because the Chick-fil-A at Lipscomb is technically an express store, the corporate office decides what should be served at express stores. Therefore, unless the corporate office includes milkshakes in the express restaurants’ menus, the well-loved dessert won’t be coming to campus. Fary said that Zebi is doing fine, but Auntie Anne’s has slowed down measurably from last year’s hype. Lipscomb has been buzzing with chatter after news broke Friday night that the university officially would begin removing all use of the acronym “LU” from campus. The university had been contacted by Virginia-based Liberty University, which claimed ownership of the abbreviation. Assistant Vice President of Communication and Marketing Kim Chaudoin said the university will return to “Lipscomb” being the primary logo for the school. “In the whole scheme of the 122 years that the university’s been around, this is just a very small blip on the screen,” Chaudoin said. “Yes, it seems like kind of a big deal now, but Lipscomb has always been the Lipscomb brand.” Chaudoin said that although Lipscomb would still love to keep “LU” as a part of the school, the campus will not allow a logo controversy to throw a wrench in the gears. “We would prefer to be able to use this mark,” she said. “[But] Lipscomb is still Lipscomb, and we’re bigger than two letters. We’re bigger than a logo.” Many Lipscomb students have expressed their shock at the move. “I honestly think it’s kind of dumb,” says Emily Dunn, a senior family relations major. “Aren’t there other universities that use the same abbreviations? I think we should be able to use it because we are Lipscomb University…LU. “But I don’t necessarily think we should go to court over it, either.” Junior English major Melissa Pinhal suggested Liberty take a look at other schools that could potentially use the “LU” acronym, including Lund University, Lincoln University, Lancaster University, Lamar University, Lawrence University, Lehigh University, Loughborough University, Laurentian University, Lindenwood University, Lakehead University, Lingnan...

Update: Here is our second story on the matter, with reactions from Lipscomb, Liberty, students and legal experts. Lipscomb will no longer be able to use the abbreviation “LU” in official capacity, the university announced to campus leaders Friday evening. After Virginia-based Liberty University contacted Lipscomb and claimed ownership over the phrase “LU,” the university decided to begin a transitioning phrase of removing “LU” from all university usage. “Several months ago, the university was contacted by legal counsel for Liberty University who informed us that they had copyrighted the use of the letters “LU” some time ago, and we did not have the right to use it as a logo or in any other description of Lipscomb University,” Vice President of Communications and Marketing Deby K. Samuels wrote in the email. “In subsequent weeks, outside legal counsel was retained, and several attempts were made at reasonable negotiation. In the end, there were two options: one, initiate federal court litigation to adjudicate the rights to “LU” or, two, discontinue its use. The cost and distraction to take the issue to court would be substantial and the outcome could still be negative. Therefore, the decision was made to immediately transition away from the use of “LU” campus wide.” Samuels noted that there will be a period of grace to help ease the transition, but no new use of the phrase “LU” will be allowed.
