The university announced on Friday via email that the shuttle service used to transport overflow parkers at the Lipscomb Academy Athletic Complex on Caldwell Lane will return Monday, Sept. 9, for a two-week trial run, ending on Sept. 20. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., a single shuttle will be running from the field’s ticket booth to Allen Arena and back every 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic. The service will last until 5:30 p.m. The university estimates that it is a 10-minute walk from the field to campus. It was indicated that continuing the service past the point of observation will depend on the level of demand for the shuttles. Both sites will have shelter during inclement weather. University offers parking tips In the same email, the university acknowledged that “finding an open parking spot on the main campus lots will often be a challenge at peak times during the fall semester.” To help remedy the situation, it was recommended that after 9 a.m., students diverge to one of the two primary overflow lots at the Stokes campus and Lipscomb Academy Athletic Complex. According to the university, those arriving prior to 9 a.m. should check the lower level of the Allen Arena West Garage by the Ezell Center, adjacent to Belmont Blvd. Parking is also available in the lot by the university softball and soccer fields. Students who wish to take public transportation are also encouraged by the university to take part in the MTA Easy Ride service. Students with school IDs can ride for free on Monday through Friday during regular hours of operation. Carpooling when possible was also suggested....

Some students may find it difficult to locate a parking spot on Monday morning when the fall semester begins, because the university’s overflow parking location has changed at virtually the last minute. Parking at the Stokes Elementary School lot, which previously was used for university overflow parking, will be significantly limited this year, Lipscomb announced in an email Thursday evening. “That school is still owned by Metro Schools. It’s their property, and they just didn’t want to lease it to us anymore,” said Kim Chaudoin, director of University Communication and Marketing. She sent out the emails announcing the changes to students and faculty. “Maybe someday it will become available again. It’s just not right now. We don’t really know what they have planned. We just know that it’s not available to us anymore.” Overflow parking will now be located at the Lipscomb Academy high school football field lot at Caldwell and Lealand lanes. “In the simplest terms, if it were this easy, you’re kind of taking what’s at one lot and moving it, still on the north end of campus, but moving it down and parking at the high school field,” Chaudoin said. “It’s not really that simple, but that’s kind of what the problem is that we’re trying to resolve.” According to Chaudoin, the loss of parking at Stokes was made official “just within the last few days.” “I think negotiations have been going on over the last few weeks, and I think it’s just, the final answer is ‘no,’” she said. “I know this week we’ve been working very hard on figuring something out, getting the shuttles...

Renovations to the student center are only a small aspect of the construction changes occurring at Lipscomb this summer. Tom Wood, director of campus enhancement, said the university will be spending about $11 million on new construction and renovations to existing areas. The list of construction and renovation work includes moving the bookstore and Uncle Dave’s to the lower level of the student center, developing a lounge area and installing a Zebis deli and Auntie Anne’s pretzels in the current bookstore space, updating McFarland by painting and furnishing the lobby and creating a “dean’s suite,” adding air conditioning in the SAC and McQuiddy gyms, creating office spaces in the basement of Burton, finishing the Cool Springs campus, installing a new track for the high school and university track teams, adding an academic resource center in the library basement and completing the nursing building. Wood said the bookstore will move to the Arlo’s location on the lower level of the student center, creating additional food service space in the current book store area. Wood said the new set up will have Auntie Anne’s and Zebis and a more private eating/lounge space. “It offers some additional food service area,” he said. “I think a lot of students have said they would like a place that is semi-private where they can have some booths and things like that where they can have a little bit of privacy instead of being out in the middle of a room some place.” In the next year or so, Wood said the university plans to extend the Starbucks porch area around the rest of the building....

Whether you’ve been at Lipscomb for 4 years or 4 weeks, it’s clear that development is playing a huge role in the future of our campus. We’ve already seen a lot of changes in the last few months, what changes can we expect in the months ahead? Please upgrade your browser Tom Wood, Director of Campus Enhancement filled Lumination in on many of the current construction projects. “The north of the [Hughes] building which is currently under construction is our new nursing building, about a 25,000 square foot [facility],” Wood said. It’ll be state of the art for our nursing students. On the south side of Hughes, we will have in a short time frame a “U” shaped complex. The pharmacy research building will go on that south side of Hughes.” “In the future, there will be two more [health science] buildings. One will be in from of the nursing building and the other will be in front of the pharmacy research building.” There are two pieces of land that the university will have to buy, but Wood said that eventually with their purchase and completion of the addition health science buildings, the area will form a five building health science quad on the north side of campus. Also, students and faculty may be excited to hear that there will be some temporary parking that will be created in the coming months with the construction. “Also, part of this program is a temporary lot which will be behind the Village, which will accommodate about 50 additional cars,” Wood said. “So out of this project here in the next few...
