Men’s soccer swept, women’s soccer finished their home portion of the season and the volleyball team is still dominating the Atlantic Sun conference. Oh, and softball in October? It was all a part of this weekend in Lipscomb sports. The Lady Bisons softball team went 4-0 this weekend, beating Chipola twice, Milligan once and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville once. Junior Whitney Kiihnl pitched a complete game against Tennessee. Kiihnl allowed one walked batter in the first, but did not allow another base runner until the seventh-inning when a UT player reached on a bunt single. Freshman Haley Elliot homered for the Lady Bisons, giving them their only run against the Lady Vols. The Bison soccer team swept this weekend on their Florida road trip, beating Jacksonville and North Florida. Miguel DaSilva and Garrett McLaughlin,scored two goals each on the weekend. Tyler Burkhardt, Garret McLaughlin, and Andrew Chamberlain also scored for the Bisons. Lipsomb’s record is now even at 2-2-0 in the Atlantic Sun and 6-6-0 overall. The Lady Bisons Soccer team closed out the home portion of the season this weekend. But the team was also handed two losses courtesy of Jacksonville and North Florida. Danielle Bethke scored the long goal for the Lipscomb on the weekend. The Lady Bisons played Jacksonville tough on Sunday, but all three goals came from set pieces. Two came from a corner kick, the other from a penalty kick. Volleyball improved to 15-5 and 4-0 in the Atlantic Sun this weekend. The Lady Bisons defeated ETSU and USC Upstate this weekend. With six seconds left on the clock what appeared to be a game heading into overtime turned into a crushing 2-1 loss for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons. Facing Kennesaw State in the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex the Lady Bisons, picked to finish number 10 in the conference, gave the number one preseason team all it could handle. “It is the hardest and most devastating loss I have experienced as a player or a coach,” Lipscomb coach Jon Ireland said. “I felt like we could have won the game if we went to overtime. I thought we had the momentum.” The two teams fought to a 0-0 deadlock in the first half. At the 48:56 mark of the second half Kennesaw State took the lead on a penalty kick by Alma Gardarsdottir. “Our defense was awesome,” Ireland said. “I can’t say enough about Katie Woods and Meghan McGuire in the middle. But the penalty kick took the wind out of us.“ The Lady Bisons never gave up, tying the game with 1:44 left to play. Andie Thornton, battling one-on-one, put the ball into the corner of the net. “That took a lot of heart,” Ireland said. “We have outworked our opponent in every game this year. It was all about revenge tonight for Lipscomb as they shutout UNC Aseville 2-0 in the opening round of the Hyatt Place Select Tournament.Last year, UNC Asheville took home the trophy after beating the Bisons 2-1. “Last year it was a game where we started to see cracks in the armor, then it was a downhill slide from there,” Lipscomb coach Charles Morrow said. “So, to have a tight game and have to battle through and keep the shutout and get a couple of goals in the process was very good.” The game was scoreless until the 70-minute mark when senior Garrett McLaughlin scored from 20 yards out to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead. “I just saw an opening and took the shot,” McLaughlin said. “I guess it moved a little bit, so the goalie had a hard time.” The win tonight gave the team its third consecutive win, after winning the Belmont Invitational last weekend. With the consistent play, it looks as if the team is improving in each game. “There were a few times in the first half where we were playing as good as I had seen,” Morrow said. “Not only as good as I have seen this year, but throughout my four or five year tenure here. “ Lipscomb moved the ball very well in the first half, generating a lot of chances, but came up short until McLaughlin’s goal in the second. “The challenge is doing that for a complete game,” Morrow said. “Asheville is a very tough team that can present some challenges that sort of gets us out of our style...

Jon Ireland, coach of the Lady Bisons soccer team has a memorable last name. Especially after today’s game versus Jackson State. The luck of the Irish was on the Lipscomb’s side today when they shutout the Tigers of JSU. The first and only goal of the game came at the eight minute mark of the first half off the foot of a Jackson State player. Luckily, though, it went into the back of their own net. Sophomore Katie Wood lead the Lady Bisons in shots with four. Putting one of those four on goal. Jackson state only managed to get seven shots off. Erin Zerlo, the keeper for the Lady Bisons only had to make one save, though. In an interview with LipscombSports.com, Jon Ireland had this to say about the game. “We have Katie, Kelsey Reiman and Kameron Stilwell in the back,” Ireland said. “The back three have been playing very well for us. Martika Powe has been playing great in the middle. The last component defensively is for Erin to get more confidence. This was a big game for her. “We were very organized. That has been the thing about our team this year. This has been the best defensive unit we have had since I have been here.” Lipscomb will not play again until Friday against Arkansas State.
