Eight social clubs. One crowd. Three judges. One winner. Kappa Iota Theta once again sponsored the ever-popular Stomp Fest event, which drew a large crowd to the sold out show. From top to bottom, Collins Alumni Auditorium was filled to the brim with Lipscomb students, faculty, parents and alumni. Lipscomb’s own TJ Ojehomon hosted the event, adding energy to the already energized group. Ojehomon went on to introduce the social clubs competing for the Stomp Fest 2013 title after an opening number where two members from each social club were represented. The first set of social clubs then performed their rehearsed routines. After a 10 minute intermission and performance by Michael “Mic O” Oruma, another one of Lipscomb’s own, the second half of the show began. The remaining social clubs closed out the night with cheers and applause, leaving the crowd to wonder who would be champion. Three judges, Shirley Bailey, Krystal Brown and Jessica Rich, who have over 20 years of combined experience in stomping, decided the winner of the competitive step show. Ojehomon called all participants to gather on stage for the announcement of the runner up and winner of 2013 after the judges tallied their scores. Pi Delta claimed second place while Sigma Iota Delta won the title as the 2013 Stomp Fest winners. Anthony Strode, a member of Sigma Iota Delta, shared how it felt to be the 2013 Stomp Fest winner by saying how surprised he was about being proclaimed champion. “I was so surprised. On Saturday, one of the biggest events of the school year is set to take place on Lipscomb’s campus. The 34th annual Tau Phi cowboy show will be held in Collins Auditorium at 7 p.m. “A ton of work goes into the show each year,” said Tau Phi senior Josh Self. “Brennan McNeil, this year’s director, has put in countless hours over the last few months in preparation. The rest of us have practiced nightly over the last few weeks. A lot of other people have also put a lot of work into the show.” The show is not just for Tau Phi members. The group receive a lot of help from the girls’ social clubs on campus. These ladies join the stage as extra performers and also help orchestrate the flow of the show. “A lot of the ladies from different clubs have been putting a lot of effort into the choreography. The show is a lot of work but is really coming together,” said Self. Year after year, Tau Phi continues this tradition, and the active members know how much this means to them and also to the members of the past. “Carrying on the Tau Phi tradition is an incredible thing. Tau Phi’s tradition is unique and something that really played a role in my decision to take part in Greek Life. We are proud of our tradition. Theta Psi is the latest addition to Lipscomb’s Greek Life. There are different opinions of what type of club Theta Psi is going to be, but they want to be the social club that seeks to “be the church.” The group became official during the last week of class of spring 2013, but during the fall, they started wearing the burgundy and yellow jersey that identifies them as Theta Psi. As a Freshman, Theta Psi’s President Zach Bowen wanted to be a part of a social club on campus but didn’t find the right one for him. Years later, as a junior, Bowen was inspired by the new girls social club Phi Nu and decided it was time to come up with a club for those who were not yet represented. Vice President Matt Samek says the process was slow and gradual, but after several meetings of talking about the purpose of the group, Theta Psi has gone from a group of six friends to a group of 25 brothers. “Being a part of this club means I can be a part of a body of believers that are striving to love people in all aspects of their life,” said club member Daniel Colemen. Mid-September came as one of the busiest times of the year for some Lipscomb students. Pledge week took over the schedule of those students who decided to get involved in Greek Life on campus. Since Lipscomb University has been established for so many years, there are bound to have been a few changes here and there. But with such a rich history and great legacy, much has stayed the same. Mary Anne Thomas Smith attended Lipscomb in the early 1950s. She chose to go to the school to find a Christian husband – an ambition at which she succeeded. Mary Anne Thomas Smith was a Lipscomb cheerleader and also worked in the McQuiddy gym. She describes student activities as being very similar to those of students today. “Mostly, we stayed on campus and went to whatever event was going on. On weekends, we went to movies and church-hopped. We were just entertained by spending time together,” Mary Anne Thomas Smith said. Jan Craig, a classmate of Smith’s who also “loved, loved, loved “ Lipscomb, noted many changes that have occurred at the university, both good and bad. “The faculty is great. There are many wonderful Bible teachers. There are so many more programs, so many things to do, so many improved facilities and the campus is a lot prettier,” Craig said. But, she doesn’t approve of the changed dress code, the cutting down of trees and the overuse of cell phones. Of course, there’s always been romance at college. “We all snuck in kisses when we could, but they were very brief,” Craig said. A big change came to Lipscomb’s campus in the 1960s when Social Clubs were introduced. The seeds have been planted by a few charter members who are planning to add one new men’s social club in the fall. The new club in question is Theta Psi. Theta Psi has a variety of members with different majors and personalities, as well as a few athletes. Their mascot is the wolf, and their colors are gray, crimson, and gold. The goal of the new organization is to build on the current successes of greek system at the university. “We are here to help advance the growth of the system, rather than destroy what has already been built,” said Evan Kersten, vice president of Theta Psi. With 25 planned new members of Theta Psi, the new club wants to be a group that loves Lipscomb and is genuine and comfortable with each other, while also being followers of Christ in the midst of social club activity, according to Kersten. “They have to be passionate about the club,” said Kersten. If not, it won’t work, he added. “This isn’t a numbers game, and we aren’t forcing anyone into joining our club. We just want to present all of the options to them, and let them choose for themselves,” said Zach Bowen, president of the new organization. “Our goal is to have a group of nice, goofy guys that are invested in Lipscomb,” Bowen said.
