Lipscomb athletics jumped the hurdle of the NCAA’s APRs last week, with each team having the necessary grades to carry on business as usual. The NCAA’s Academic Progress Rates are assessed each term and pinpoint low academic scores for all NCAA athletes under scholarship. Any team that reaches the point of scoring a 925 or under can incur scholarship loss. Scoring below a 900 can warrant a multitude of other penalties. Lipscomb athletics passed the reports, with no team scoring below a 940. For the second year in a row, women’s tennis led the school with a score of 1000 – the highest obtainable score. The program has had the same score of 1000 since the 2008-2009 report. Below is a chart showing the APRs of all Lipscomb teams, comparing them to last year’s reports. Here are some newsworthy links from around campus. ACADEMIC NEWS The College of Education has started a new program for students with intellectual disabilities. ATHLETICS NEWS Madi Talbert became the first Lady Bison to advance to the NCAA Nationals in Track and Field last Friday. Pete Dalton has been announced as a new assistant coach with the Cross Country/Track and Field program. The softball season ended earlier this month. Here’s a year-in-review of the Lady Bisons’ season. New basketball coach Casey Alexander participated in a Q-&-A with Jonathan Seamon at the Brentwood Church of Christ on Wednesday evening. Brent High introduces the event at around the 11 minute mark. EVENT NEWS Gov. Bill Haslam was on campus on Tuesday, May 28 as a part of the Volunteer Girls State conference. For the first time in Lipscomb’s history as an NCAA Division 1 school, the softball team will host the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament at Draper Diamond, beginning Wednesday, May 8. Of the team’s 19 players, only senior outfielder Bree Thurman has won a conference title. She’s hoping to finish off her career with one more. The young women have been running, lifting and scrimmaging for months to get prepared for a successful season and a drive for the tourney title. The team finished the regular season with a 32-22 overall record, also posting up a 18-8 record in conference play. “Conference tournament is what we have all been working for since the fall,” junior third baseman Rena’ Cothron said. “It’s going to be exciting, stressful and loud, with all of our friends and family at the games,” Cothron said. “I can’t wait to play for a championship title in front of all the people I love.” And there really is something to the old phrase: “home-field advantage.” “It will be nice to finally be the players who know our field the best; that will definitely be to our advantage,” junior catcher Haley Elliott said. “It will be nice too that we don’t have to worry about any kind of travel and we will be in our comfort zone,” Elliot said. The Student-Athletic Advisory Committee is a group of athletes nominated by their teammates to represent the individual sports at Lipscomb. Each team is allowed to have two players per team. These athletes plan, run and work with different organizations to work on raising money for these specific charities. The group’s meetings are held once every two weeks at the Hall of Fame room in Allen Arena. At these meetings, members discuss issues going on with their teams and events that are happening or that should happen within the athletic department. The mission of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (NCAA SAAC) is to “enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete’s well-being and fostering a positive student-athlete...
