The Bisons finished the three game sweep against the Redbirds of Illinois State on Saturday at Ken Dugan Field. GAME ONE Lipscomb took control of the Diamond during game one, defeating ISU by a score of 8-1. The Bisons got off to a fast start in game 1. In the bottom of the first Tyler and Lee Wilson both hit singles to get on base and Andrew Nickerson was able to bring them home with a deep shot that one hopped off the left field fence. The game stayed at 2-0 until the top of the third when the Redbirds scored what would be their only run of the game when Kevin Tokarski took the first pitch from Lipscomb’s Davey Hackett to deep left field for a solo home run. This would be Hackett’s only blemish of the game. While Hackett did give up five hits and walked four he limited the Redbirds to only 1 run. After five scoreless innings from ISU’s Ryan Copeland the Bison’s caught fire in the bottom of the seventh when Shawn Mehring hit a triple to deep center field. He then scored on an errant pitch by Copeland. Brett Teschner was then walked, followed by an M.L. Williams double on a grounder that snuck in between the third baseman and the shortstop. Tyler Wilson then followed with a double that scored both Teschner and Williams to put the Bison’s on top 5-1. Chad Fromm would come into the game in the eighth inning in relief for Hackett. Senior pitcher Josh Smith threw his second complete game of the season on Friday night. Smith allowed one run on 7 hits on his way to a 5-3 win over the Redbirds of Illinois State. Friday night the Bisons opened up their weekend series with the Redbirds of Illinois State. Josh Smith made his sixth start of the season. Smith, 4-1 on the year, was coming off of a season-high 15-strikeout game. Smith would not disappoint in this outing either. Throwing nine complete innings , Smith allowed one run on seven hits. Smith walked one and struck out 15, again. Illinois State came into the game with a 12-10 record. The Redbirds had won seven out of their last nine. It was very important for Lipscomb to keep SIU off the bases. Coming into Friday night’s game the Redbirds had 47 stolen bases, nearly surpassing their total from all of last season. The Bisons gave Smith an early cushion in the first. Zach Messer drove in freshman Lee Wilson on a beautifully executed hit-and-run. Messer drove a fastball right up the middle as Wilson was attempting to steal second. After three shutout innings from Smith, Lipscomb added another run. Senior Tyler Wilson singled up the middle to score M.L. Williams. Lee Wilson and Corey Hale also scored later in the inning. The Redbirds answered in the fourth scoring one run on two hits. 10. First Regular Season Title The Bisons basketball team entered uncharted territory in 2006. For the first time in school history the Bisons earned an invitation to the NIT postseason tournament after winning the Atlantic Sun regular-season championship. Following a 77-48 win over Kennesaw State in Allen Arena. The Bisons cut down the nets and claimed first place in the A-Sun with Belmont nipping at their heels in second. The Bisons finished the season with a 21-11 record which still stands as the best overall record for Lipscomb since joining the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2003. 9. Bison Baseball player gets drafted In 2009 Rex Brothers, a Lipscomb University student and member of the men’s baseball team was drafted to the Colorado Rockies. 8. Lipscomb Baseball vs. Georgia The Bisons baseball team defeated SEC champions Georgia in the 2008 regional tournament. Lipscomb was a regional 4th seed facing a national 8th seed. The upset advanced the Bisons into the winners bracket. The upset was ranked as the sixth surprising upsets of the decade. 7. Phillip Hutcheson Named Athletic Director It was announced October 10, 2008 that Phillip Hutcheson would be taking over the responsibilities of the Athletic Director for the Lipscomb Bisons. By the time Hutcheson had graduated, he had become college basketball’s all-time leading scorer…a record he would relinquish three years later to his former roommate, Bison star John Pierce. 6. The Bison baseball hosted ETSU on Friday and Saturday. While the Bisons won on Friday by a score of 9-4, the team lost both games of their doubleheader on Saturday, however, losing 15-6 and 6-3. Game 1 On Friday, senior Josh Smith tstarted for the Bisons. This was Smith’s fifth decision of the season. The win brought his record to 4-1 overall. Smith’s strikeout total, 15, was the highest for the Bison’s in four years. ETSU got on the board early in the first, the Bisons, however, answered back with two runs in the third. Kyle Henry started off the inning with a double to center. Henry moved over to third on a Tyler Wilson groundout. M.L. Williams then walked on four straight pitches. Lee Wilson drove in Henry on a single to right. Kyle Messer got the second RBI of the inning on a sac-fly that brought in Williams. In the fourth, Henry reached base again on a triple. That hit brought in Hostettler and Hoelzer. Henry scored later on a sac-bunt courtesy of Tyler Wilson. Zach Messer then made a stir of the ballpark, getting a rare inside the park homerun. The hit brought in Lee Wilson and M.L. Williams. Before the game was over ETSU had score 3 more runs, Lipscomb one more. Smith held on for the victory pitching 9 complete innings, giving up four runs on 5 hits. Game 2 The Bisons were back at it again on Saturday for a double header with ETSU. The softball team faced one the best pitchers in the nation on Saturday; that, however, would not slow them down on their way to improve their conference record to 4-0 Game 1 It was an old fashioned pitchers’ duel on Saturday afternoon as Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and Upstate’s Morgan Childers went head-to-head at Draper Diamond. Going into the weekend Kiihnl and Childers ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in hits given up per game. The two pitchers lived up to their rankings until the fourth inning when Lipscomb got on the board via a Mollie Mitchell single that brought in Kellie Sirus. Sirus reached base on a hit-by-pitch. With Kiihnl in the zone, Lipscomb added three more runs to their side of the board in the fifth. Lauren Dortwegt started off the inning with a single to center, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Tucker. Dortwegt then scored on a single courtesy of Abby Keese. Sirus then doubled to left, scoring Keese. Sirus reached third on a Courtney Billington sacrifice fly to right field. Christen Campbell then doubled to left, scoring Sirus. After the fifth, Kiihnl shut down Upstate for two more innings, giving the Lady Bisons a 4-0 win. Kiihnl pitched 7 innings, allowing five hits and striking out 8. Game 2 In game two of the afternoon, Kiihnl showed Upstate that she could not only pitch, but also swing the bat well.
