The semester may quickly be drawing to an end, but Lipscomb’s Student Government Association is still in planning mode, working with administration to govern students more effectively. “Something that we’re currently working on internally is that we’re trying to revise the constitution,” SGA President Andrew Hunt said. “We have found that Lipscomb has changed a lot in the past few years,” Hunt said. “We feel like we can better work with the administration.” The constitution was last revised in 2010. “Things have changed a lot even since then,” he said. “We’re trying to restructure SGA.” Hunt, a senior and corporate management major, also said SGA is working with the provost’s office to revamp certain majors. “We recently sent out some surveys to students to see what the demand for each major is,” Hunt said. “They are some departments that are more adult study heavy, like business, [law, justice and society], social work, where classes are only offered at night.” Hunt says SGA wants to give a chance for students to be able to get more involved in night activities. “We’re working with the provost to see if there’s any way we can take students out of [night classes] by offering the classes during the day as well,” Hunt said. Some SGA plans are already in motion, such as adding a new printer to the Ezell Center. “Hopefully, after spring break, we’ll have a printer in Ezell,” Hunt said. “We’ve been working with a lot of the departments in Ezell to see who can fund it. Whether students are avid fans of the National Football League or not, many Bisons are making plans to watch Super Bowl XLVIII between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. “I think the two teams in the Super Bowl deserve to be there,” sophomore Todd Lambeth said. “Seattle has the best defense in the league. Denver has Peyton Manning, and any offense is going to be successful with him.” “I think Denver will win,” Lamberth predicted. “It will be a close game, but I think Denver’s offense will be able to work Seattle’s defense pretty well and be able to put some points up. I think it will be high scoring game, with Denver winning by a touchdown.” Peyton Manning’s record-breaking season may be the reason that students would pick the Broncos to win. Manning is also popular in Tennessee because he played for the Volunteers during his college years. “I’m picking the Broncos to win because I love Peyton, and a Super Bowl win will just put the icing on the cake for the great season he has had this year,” sophomore Eric Dunn said. One student is looking forward to seeing the legendary Manning and Seattle’s dynamic cornerback Richard Sherman face off. “I think the Broncos are going to win if there is good weather,” freshman Tanner Allen said. “Peyton Manning is going to be too much for the Seahawks defense, and hopefully [he will] make Richard Sherman look bad. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place. One of Lipscomb’s Student Government Association’s aspirations is to help create an energized campus atmosphere every year. To SGA President Andrew Hunt, this year will hold plenty of exciting opportunities for LU students. “I feel like it is our responsibility to make sure students have a good experience,” said Hunt, a Corporate Management senior from Centerville, Tenn. “We are going to provide events . We want people to have fun, but we want to provide spiritually uplifting opportunities and academically challenging opportunities, too.” SGA is partnering with Residence Life and the Student Activities Board to bring bigger and better events to students on campus. Among this year’s anticipated events are Lipscomb’s annual Paint the Herd, a fall concert and a spring concert. “We can have a whole lot more events [if we partner with Residence Life and SAB],” Hunt said, affirming that the events can be of better quality with the partnership. “In the end, it’s not about if this is a SGA event,” Hunt said. “It’s about students having the opportunity to do this because SGA had a part in it.” Students can be looking forward to this semester’s fall concert with Dave Barnes, which will be on Oct. 1 in Collins Alumni Auditorium at 7 p.m. The spring headliner will be announced at a later date. Dining still a central focus for SGA SGA has been pushing for off-campus meal plans for a long time. Lipscomb’s Student Activities Board has been working hard this summer to create a full slate of events to entertain students during the fall semester, including some usual suspects and a concert with a noted local musician. Thanks to the partnership with SAB, SGA, Campus Ministry and Lipscomb Athletics, there is some sort of activities planned every day of the week throughout the fall. If you take a look at the schedule, you’ll recognize some of the main attractions that come up every year: the Dodgeball Tournament, Paint the Herd, and the Running of the Bison. In addition to the normal events, SAB added more events with the help of their on campus partnerships. SGA President Andrew Hunt has been working alongside SAB to create more events every week on campus. “Besides some new events, the only major difference for this semester is that we’re working a lot more closely with SAB,” Hunt said. “We hope that splitting the cost of events will help both of our budgets go further, so we will be able to have more, higher-quality events.” Local musician Dave Barnes will kick off Homecoming Week in concert on Oct.1 at 7 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium.
