Voter apathy comes in all ages and stages of life, including at Lipscomb University. In mid-term elections that changed the face of Congress, reversing the course set two years ago when the Democrats swept into office, many Lipscomb students simply chose not to participate when the balloting was held Nov. 2. “The main reason that I didn’t vote was simply because I am so busy as a college student,” Nick Painter, junior information technology major from Franklin, Tenn. “Since I am unable to adequately follow the news, it would be irresponsible for me to vote without thoroughly reviewing all the candidates and having a deep understanding of all the issues at hand.” Many other students had similar opinions of these mid-term elections. Some were disinterested. Some weren’t legally able to vote. Some didn’t care. “I lost my voter registration card and it just wasn’t a big priority,” Christina Bartelt, sophomore elementary education major from Fayetteville, Tenn. “I didn’t know who was running, let alone who I would elect. I honestly couldn’t name a single candidate, as sad as that is.” Other students didn’t vote because they are not from Tennessee. “I didn’t vote because I forgot all about the absentee ballot,” said Michelle Rivard, sophomore accounting major from Sanford, Maine. “I don’t live in Tennessee and it just completely slipped my mind.” Some students were not even registered to vote because the last presidential election was before they were of legal voting age. They thought they had plenty of time to register before the next presidential election and therefore waited. “I’m actually not registered to vote,” Lindsey Schafer, sophomore Spanish major from Rowley, Mass. “But to be...

From LipscombSports.com — Don’t think badly of the Lipscomb Lady Bisons, but they don’t like to share– at least when it is a regular season championship. “We didn’t want to share anything,” said senior middle blocker Alex Kelly. When the Lady Bisons put the finishing touches on a 3-1 match win over the Belmont Bruins Tuesday night at Allen Arena this edition of the “Battle of the Boulevard” meant more than just another win. The victory gave the Lady Bisons a 10-0 conference record, marking the second season they have finished unbeaten in Atlantic Sun games. Last season under the double-round robin format and in the A-Sun Tournament they finished 22-0 in conference matches. It also extended their conference regular season winning streak to 35 games, second only to Hawaii. They are fourth nationally in home wins in a row with 26. “With all the parity in the conference this season it is tremendous for us to go undefeated,” Rosenthal said. “And we did it in style. “The single round-robin is tough. A 22-0 record might sound better than a 10-0 record. But the 10-0 was much more pressure-packed than 22-0. Our girls have done some awesome stuff.” By finishing without a loss it also guaranteed the Lady Bisons sole possession of the regular season championship. With Kennesaw State sitting in second at 8-1 there was a possibility of having to share the title which they had clinched at least a share of last weekend on the road in Florida. “I credit the girls,” Rosenthal said. “To go undefeated in back-to-back years is really hard to do. It is...

On a night during which many voters expressed disapproval for the Obama administration and the Democrats, Tennessee became one of many states from around the country to elect a Republican governor. And voters in the Volunteer State didn’t have to wait long to find out all the pre-election prognostications were correct: By 7:28 p.m. the Associated Press declared Bill Haslam the winner. Republican Haslam, mayor of Knoxville, and Democrat Mike McWherter, a Jackson businessman and the son of former Gov. Ned McWherter, sought to succeed outgoing Gov. Phil Bredesen. With nearly half of the precincts having reported, Haslam controlled about 70 percent of the vote. During his victory speech Haslam — who had spent a part of the evening chairing the Knoxville City Council, one of his mayoral duties — expressed excitement about the tasks at hand. “I am looking forward to working with Gov. Bredesen–we are starting as early as (Wednesday),” Haslam said. “It is my duty to make certain that Tennessee continues to move forward. While it’s time to celebrate the victory, we must not forget that we face some major social issues.” It also appears that Tennessee has approved a constitutional guarantee to hunt and fish. Much like what other Southern states have done — South Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas — Tennessee will now have the right to hunt and fish implanted into the state’s constitution. While it does not change the law, it prevents from hunting and fishing from being outlawed without changing the constitution. Several participants from COMMA volunteered at the News Channel 4 studios Tuesday night. The COMMA students (members of the Communication Majors and Minors Association) answered phone calls from all around the state to...
