The Lipscomb track and field team is making their presence known after having just three indoor meets so far, they haven’t wasted any time breaking records this spring. Saturday, the Bisons competed in the TSU invite. The meet was not scored overall, but there were several individual victories. For the close-knit Bison team, individual records are celebrated throughout the team as if the whole team accomplished the goal. “Our team has so much love for each other,” Junior thrower April Terry said. “We support one another, and I think that’s a big reason for our success.” The meet started off on a good note for the Bisons. Senior Dani Walker began by taking first in the women’s mile and later on would take second in the women’s 800 meter. Annika Backlund, only a freshman, broke the indoor record in the women’s vault as she cleared 3.41 meters, and then with her next attempt cleared 3.56 meters winning the event. April Terry is yet again breaking records. She broke the indoor weight throw record with a throw at 16.92 meters. “I think our team is going to do wonderful this year,” Terry said. “We have a very talented freshmen class with a lot of talented returners to go with it.” Junior pole vaulter Kevin Floyd won the men’s pole vault with 4.32 meters, and freshman high jumper Sarah Wagner broke the record for women’s high jump with a jump of 1.63 meters. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place. Freddy Quiteno, a recent Lipscomb graduate, looked out at the crowd in Allen Arena and said, “Without the YMCA Latino Achievers, I might not be standing here on stage before you. I am deeply grateful for the encouragement and support I received from the staff.” His comments came earlier this month, during the 10th annual dinner honoring YMCA Latino Achievers. Up-and-coming Hispanic college students are the focus of the program. The program has achieved much success in its high school initiatives, which have a 100 percent graduation rate and half of its participants moving on to college. Dinner invitees include national and local businesses that have contributed financially to the organization’s program. The annual event serves as an opportunity not only for local businesses to support a good cause but also for Hispanic professionals to network and serve as mentors and role models to the students. Tabbata Castillo, a senior nursing major, gave the welcome, greeting benefactors with her testimonial about how she has benefitted from the program. Lipscomb students shared what they appreciated about the program. “The Latino Achievers Program has really helped me just by allowing me to be here [at Lipscomb]. If it wasn’t for this program, I wouldn’t even have had the opportunity to go to college,” said Melanie Re, a sophomore studying corporate management. “It was encouraging that there was a program that put hope back in my life,” she said. “Coming to Lipscomb through the program was the best decision I ever made.” Sophomore Oscar Rayo, an interntional business student, said, “Not only did they help me find more scholarships, they also helped me to develop more networks that would connect...

Last month it was announced that Belmont would be the leaving the A-Sun and becoming 12th member of the Ohio Valley Conference. While it was announced on the 13th of May, Belmont will not officially join the OVC until July 1, 2012. Belmont president Robert Fisher was intentional in explaining that the move was a strategic one that was made for the student-athletes and the budget of the university. Belmont will have to pay $200,000 to leave the Atlantic Sun Conference, however, the school’s travel costs will drop immensely. “You don’t have to get on a plane to go anywhere,” Dr. Fisher said. “And the students won’t have to miss as many classes.” Missing classes is something that Belmont and Lipscomb have dealt with in the past because of the long travels the two schools make to Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. This bodes even worse for Lipscomb now, since their travel partner will no longer be making the trips. Usually, Lipscomb and Belmont would share a plane when traveling to Florida to play teams like North Florida and Jacksonville. Now, Belmont’s longest road trip will be a six hour bus ride to Edwardsville, Ill. to play Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. All of Belmont’s current teams – other than men’s soccer – will be recognized by the OVC in 2012. And despite reports, Belmont does not plan to add football anytime soon. The 3-0 win was a lot closer than Lipscomb wanted it to be on Tuesday night. The Lady Bisons fought their way out of a close third set to sweep the Tennessee State Tigers and improve to 5-2 overall. The Lady Bisons easily defeated the Tigers in the first two sets with 25-10 and 25-14. “Our transition game did a really nice job,” Lady Bison Head Coach, Brandon Rosenthal, said. “I thought for one and a half sets we did a really nice job of executing and eliminating chances for them to get extra points to the ball.” The third set for Lipscomb was all about teamwork as they found themselves tied with Tennessee State during the third set. The Lady Bison’s fought back after being down 8-1 early on in the set to win 25-21. “Our energy kind of let off,“ said Rosenthal. “I told them I wasn’t going to bail them out by calling time outs, that it really comes down to them. The girls did a great job of making points on their own. Senior leaders like Stefine “Jake” Pease, Meghan Hinemeyer and Alex Kelly kept the team focused during the last set. “It’s a Senior led team, I’m not too worried about it,” said Rosenthal. “If I know the team like I do I don’t think there will be any doubt tomorrow in practice there will be a great sense of urgency to pick the team back up.” The Lady Bisons will travel to South Carolina later this week for the Gamecock...
