Men’s Ultimate frisbee team takes second in regionals, hopes for bid to nationals

With a trip to Buffalo, NY and a bid to the Division III National Tournament within their grasp, the Lipscomb Ultimate team took to the field with high hopes. “We knew going in that we had a shot to win the tournament, so we were kind of disappointed that we didn’t,” said Jordan Bates, a senior marketing major from Nashville. “But at the same time, we fought through a lot of fatigue and windy weather to get some quality wins. So we were happy overall.” The regional tournament was hosted Milledgeville, Ga., for all Division III (DIII) schools in the southeast region. Any school with 7,500 students or less qualified under DIII, and any school with more is considered Division I (DI). The Ultimate team went up against Spring Hill in their first game and beat them by a final score of 15-1. They took on Florida Tech for their second match, whom they also beat 15-1. Lipscomb then took on Georgia College and State University, the veteran team hosting the tournament, and lost 10-15. This was a hard fought loss, as the Lipscomb men who came back from being down 8-1 at the half just couldn’t gain enough momentum to win. The team wasn’t able to take their entire squad to the tournament due to scheduling conflicts, and their lack of subs caught up with them. The exhausted team lost a close game to Southern Polytech State 14-15 to close out the day. The ultimate frisbee was at it again last weekend. Competing against schools like Vanderbilt, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Emory and several others, the Bisons took seventh place in the tournament. Lipscomb posted a 3-3 record on the weekend. While this tournament was a big deal, the real season begins in the Spring. Lipscomb beat Belmont in something other than basketball or soccer this weekend, and Lipscomb’s other sports teams didn’t disappoint either.The Lipscomb Ultimate team started off the weekend in winning fashion, beating Belmont in the first ever event held on the new intramural fields on campus.  According to SGA’s twitter feed, there were over 200 students that attended the game. Men’s soccer lost to a very talented Xavier team 1-0 on Friday night, but bounced back and won 2-0 Sunday against Bowling Green State.  Garret Pettis and Miguel DaSilva both scored goals for the Bisons.  Nick Bibb, Garrett McLaughlin and Chase Nieri were awarded with assists.  The Bisons play hosts to Florida Gulf Coast this Friday at 7 p.m. The Lady Bisons’ soccer team was held scoreless in both of their games this weekend, losing 2-0 to ETSU on Friday and 1-0 to USC Upstate on Sunday.  Lipscomb next game will be at home this Saturday at 7 p.m. versus Campbell. The volleyball team defeated Florida Gulf Coast 3-0 Sunday to improve to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Sun. [FIRST MATCH FRIDAY V. BELMONT] Lipscomb Ultimate: Story behind mystery team

For most Lipscomb students, playing Ultimate Frisbee is only a hobby. But for a small group of students it is a full-blown sport. Jordan Bates, a Senior marketing major from Nashville, got the idea to start the Ultimate team in 2009 after watching some other people play. “I just saw a lot of people playing Ultimate in intramurals, and I thought that a lot of people had the potential to be really good,” Bates said. “We’ve grown and gotten a lot better since that point.” After the idea of the team came together, the next step was actually to turn that idea into action. The suggestion of an Ultimate Frisbee team was presented to SGA in order to get the appropriate funds for jerseys and tournament entry fees. “I think it was good exposure for the school, and it gets more people involved with extra curricular activities on campus,” Bates said. “They have been kind enough thus far to give us really good funding to enter tournaments.” The Ultimate circuit is not defined in conferences like the rest of the sports at Lipscomb. Instead, the region divisions are called “sections.” Lipscomb is in the Alabama section along with teams like Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and several other large schools. “It’s a pretty big deal in college,” Bates said. “Most schools have a team, if not two.” Don’t think that just because Lipscomb is competing against larger schools that they cannot contend.
