The Lipscomb men’s tennis team was defeated 4-0 by Vanderbilt Friday evening at the Vanderbilt University Currey Tennis Center. It was the quickest loss Lipscomb (4-5) has had this season. The match lasted less than two hours. “I would never use it as an excuse, but I don’t think we were the most healthy [tonight],” Lipscomb’s head coach Geoff Hernandez said. “But I’m pretty pleased with what the guys brought in preparation for St. John’s (Saturday’s match).” The Bisons started the night down 1-0 when they lost the doubles point to the Commodores. In line two, Lipscomb’s Jorge Ortegon and Pedro Uribe were first to lose their set 6-1 to Vanderbilt’s Adam Sraberg and Christiaan Worst. In line three, Lipscomb’s Jake Penny and Michael Tougher lost 6-2 to George Harwell and Marcus Ferreira, leaving the No. 1 doubles match unfinished between Lipscomb’s Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena and Vanderbilt’s Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe. After the teams moved onto singles play, Lipscomb was never able to get a point against Vanderbilt. Lipscomb’s Uribe, in line four, lost to Rowe 6-0, 6-4 to set the score at 2-0 in Vanderbilt’s favor. Next, in line three, Ortegon was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Vanderbilt’s Macsen Sisam, which put Lipscomb further behind at 3-0. Caffarena, the No. 2 player for the Bisons, lost both of his sets 6-3 against Harwell, and the Commodores took the 4-0 victory. Matches between Lipscomb’s Chaw and Vanderbilt’s Klinger, and Penny against Ferreira were left unfinished. “Obviously, we came to do our best against Vanderbilt,” said Hernandez. “But we’ve had a bunch of guys sick and some injuries....

Lipscomb women’s soccer defeats Chattanooga 3-0

Lipscomb women’s soccer defeated Chattanooga 3-0 Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. With this game, the Lady Bisons have played six straight games without giving up a goal against opponents. “I am impressed with the way this team has jelled,” head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “Hopefully they will continue to improve.” Freshman Brooke Brenner scored the only goal for the Bisons in the first half of the 13th minute. The goal was assisted by sophomore Elizabeth Ashwood, who played the ball across the Chattanooga backline. UTC’s Katie Emig made several stops, but Lipscomb continued to aggressively pound the net in the second half. In the 64th minute, senior Caroline Chadwell scored the second goal of the game and was assisted by freshman Maycie McKay. Freshman Lindsay Brent scored the third goal of the game in the 77th minute. Sophomore Emily Rogers assisted the goal. O’Brien said he was very happy with the balance of veteran and young players contributing to the game. “This makes our entire program more competitive,” O’Brien said. “It shows that our players genuinely care about each other and they have a great spirit, which makes it an awesome group to coach.” Lipscomb women’s soccer will take on Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. High Rise remodeled for first time in 15 years

High Rise remodeled for first time in 15 years

High Rise renovations that are aimed to provide the “wow” factor to residental living on campus include new flooring, paint, furniture and more room for socializing. “We’ve done this because the students need it,” Dean of Student Life Sam Smith said. “The university needs it for when we’re recruiting and students come to our campus and then they go to Belmont and they go to Vanderbilt. “We needed a facility that would make a ‘wow statement’ for them, and High Rise will be that building,” Smith said. 10 rooms have been eliminated to add to the main level lobby and expand common area on some of the floors. The common area expansions on the third, seventh and eighth floors will include sitting areas, conference rooms and study rooms. “We’ve taken a big shot at increasing the community space in High Rise,” Smith said. “We don’t want students to just live there, we want them to enjoy being there and have time to be around people they want to be around, people that they want to be with, for it to feel like home while they’re here.” In addition to expanding lobbies, the closets of each room have been removed and will be replaced with wardrobes. This will increase room space and allow residents more freedom to arrange their rooms in a way that suits them. The bathrooms will be redone with changing stalls attached to the showers to make the spaces more private despite being community restrooms. “I am very excited about the renovation,”  High Rise Resident Hall Director Mike Smith said. “The extra community space will give residents more space to...

Lipscomb baseball takes loss to Vandy in NCAA Regional opener

The Lipscomb baseball team fell to Vanderbilt 9-1 at the NCAA regional game at Hawkins Field Friday night.  Vanderbilt spread out its scoring in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Commodores started the scoring with two runs in the second inning on a two-run homer by left fielder Jeren Kendall. Vanderbilt’s big inning came in the sixth when it scored a total of five runs on three singles and a double. “We held with Vanderbilt the first few innings,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “We just gave them too many freebies.” The only run for the Bisons came from junior redshirt Adam Lee. “I saw that [Vandy starter Carson Fulmer] threw a slider on a three-two pitch,” Lee said. “I put a good swing on it, which led to a base hit.” Lee’s RBI was Fulmer’s first run surrendered in 27 and 2/3 innings at home. The last one was on March 14 against Arkansas. Fulmer, who is considered to be a first-round draft pick by many experts, pitched seven innings and had 11 strike outs. “We knew what he [Fulmer] was going to bring,” Forehand said. “He was using the breaking ball effectively and threw it short, which really messed with our batters. “It is hard to prepare for a guy that throws a 95-mile-an-hour fastball and the next pitch is a 79-mile-an-hour breaking ball at your waist.” Forehand said he hopes the bats for Lipscomb will ignite its offense Saturday. Lipscomb will take on Radford on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the losers’ bracket.
