You might think that a college campus would be one of the safer places to rest your head. Walking to and from classes in broad daylight might be a simple, safe task, but think about if that one late-night class runs a few minutes over, or if that study session with a friend goes longer than expected. The long, dark walk back to your car in the dead of night can be a stressful experience, especially during the winter months when the moon creeps out quicker each evening. For a certain Vanderbilt student, this late-night stroll turned into something different entirely. In the early hours of Nov. 3, a female senior of the university was held at gunpoint by an unknown criminal. The man demanded her purse and quickly fled the scene once the bag was procured. This scary incident occurred during the student’s walk back to her on-campus apartment. The Lipscomb Security and Safety team works day and night to ensure that events like this don’t happen to Lipscomb students. Brad Wyatt, the director of security on campus, made it clear that the incident on Vanderbilt’s campus was unfortunate, but he said he hopes Lipscomb students understand that events like this have never occurred on Lipscomb’s campus during his four years as director of security. In fact, a mugging of that nature has never occurred on campus. He said he hopes that Lipscomb understand that, while on Lipscomb’s campus, safety is a top priority for his team. Amid the sweltering summer heat, Lipscomb’s campus is buzzing with freshman in attendance for advance, construction workers renovating Fanning and students trying to squeeze in a few hours towards graduation. With so much happening on campus, one cannot forget that Lipscomb University’s Dugan Field has a new tenant this summer, although they’re not wearing purple and gold. The tenant is the Nashville Outlaws, a baseball team which is playing all of their home games this summer on Lipscomb’s campus. The Outlaws are a member of the western division of the Prospect League, a 14 team, two-division league, which offers college players the opportunity to play summer baseball while transitioning from aluminum to wooden bats. The Outlaws previously played their home games at Vanderbilt, but moved to Lipscomb University this summer. When asked why the team decided to begin playing their three month season at Lipscomb, general manager Luke Collier said Lipscomb offered the team a much better location than what they had at Vanderbilt. “The team likes Lipscomb. People are friendly and help out,” said Collier. “Game turnouts have been around 100 people.” The turnout is much-appreciated by the Outlaws players and front office, as the team plays a rigorous 56-game summer season. The Nashville fans are certainly having an impact on the team, and as of July 11, the Outlaws are in second place in the western division, three and a half games behind the Quincy Gems. Many well-known Major League Baseball players have spent time in the Prospect League including Mike Schmidt, Kirby Puckett, Ryan Howard, Jonathan Papelbon and Joe Girardi. The ultimate frisbee was at it again last weekend. Competing against schools like Vanderbilt, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Emory and several others, the Bisons took seventh place in the tournament. Lipscomb posted a 3-3 record on the weekend. While this tournament was a big deal, the real season begins in the Spring. Junior Corey Hale had a career night at the plate, driving in seven runs. The Bisons would fall to Vanderbilt though, losing 13-10. Hale had a double and a pair of home runs, including a grand slam in the ninth, giving him seven RBIs on the night. Andrew Nickerson also had two RBIs. Lipscomb got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first. The Wilson brothers, Tyler and Lee, both got on base. Corey Hale took over from there. Hale put the first fastball that he saw over the center field wall, allowing the Bisons to lead 3-0. However, Vanderbilt wasted no time to take over. In the top of the second the Commodores scored four runs off of freshman starting pitcher Chris Nunn. Nunn threw for two innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Josh Cotham, Blake Fonfra, and Matt Bowling also pitched for the Bisons. Vanderbilt would score three more runs before Lipscomb moved runners across the plate again. Lipscomb scored two in the fourth and one in the sixth, to bring the score to 10-5 after six. Going into the ninth, Lipscomb found themselves down by seven. That is when Corey took control again. With the bases loaded Corey Hale answered the call again, hitting a grand slam over the left field wall. The Bisons did not score again, making the final score 13-10. Vanderbilt relief pitcher Will Clinard was rewarded the save. With the loss, Lipscomb’s record falls to 13-25.
