Bisons win ASUN tourney, advance to NCAA Tournament for first time

The Lipscomb University Bisons are going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Lipscomb (22-9) defeated the top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles (23-10) 108-96 in the ASUN Conference Championship in Fort Myers to earn an automatic bid to the tournament. It was, to put it mildly, a barn-burner. Garrison Mathews put up 33 points and nine boards for the Bisons. Brandon Goodwin and Zach Johnson scored 34 and 37, respectively, for FGCU. The teams combined for 37 turnovers and 28 three-pointers made. Each side dominated one half of the game. Mathews came out firing. The ASUN’s leading scorer canned his first four shots, three of them from deep, as the Bisons roared out to a 24-9 lead. He said Coach Casey Alexander told the team to enjoy the stage, but treat it like another game. Matt Rose and Aaron Korn kept the good times rolling with threes of their own—Lipscomb started the game 7-of-9 from deep. Eli Pepper threw down an alley-oop dunk assisted by Kenny Cooper, then the pair connected again for another Pepper jam. George Brammeier scored a pair of layups. Mathews just kept scoring. When the dust settled on the Bisons’ breakneck first half, Mathews had 26 points on 13 shots. Lipscomb led 60-31, good for the Bisons’ highest-scoring half of the year. The Bisons shot 20-of-30 from the field and assisted on 16 of those baskets. Cooper dished out nine of those assists and finished the game with 17 points. In the first, FGCU survived on a diet of contested threes and midrange jumpers, shooting 12-of-29 and turning the ball...

Bisons to face Nashville Soccer Club at home March 1

Nashville S.C., the brand-new professional soccer team in town, is coming to Lipscomb March 1 for a friendly match against the Bisons. It’s not the first time Lipscomb has played a pro team, but it will be the first time it’s hosted one. The Bisons defeated a United Soccer League foe last March, shocking Louisville City F.C. 1-0 in Elizabethtown, Ky. Louisville outshot the Bisons 17-4 in that game, but Ivan Sakou’s goal off a rebound gave Lipscomb the surprise victory. The two teams will square off again on Mar. 7. “The Louisville and Nashville games this year will be games that test us big-time,” coach Charles Morrow said. “We will get opportunities and chances, but I don’t think it’s realistic for us to go into a game against professionals and think that we’re going to impose our will on that team.” “It’s a game that we have to learn how to have success in other ways than they’re used to, and that helps us grow for sure,” he said. Morrow noted that the spring season gives him a look at younger players and shows him what the team needs to work on going into the fall. “Beyond defending, are we able to possess the ball? Are we able to control any segments of the game? Are we able to create goal-scoring opportunities?” Morrow named Bennie Harris, Simon Holden and Austin Eager as a trio of inexperienced defenders that would see significant action this spring. Former Lipscomb standout Micah Bledsoe will suit up for Nashville as the team’s third goalkeeper. Morrow said he hopes Bledsoe sees some playing time,...

BREAKING: Campus police asks students to stay in dorms overnight

Lipscomb Security warned students in a campus-wide email to stay in their dorms overnight Wednesday, citing “two serious crimes” in Green Hills. The Tennessean reported a shooting with injury near the Green Hills Library, located at 3701 Benham Ave. WSMV reported that the victim was a man and that a maroon Jeep Cherokee with three black male suspects fled the scene. The second crime to which the email refers is unknown. University spokesperson Kim Chaudoin sent the email at 11:02 PM Wednesday evening. “As a precautionary measure, we request that residential students remain in their residence halls this evening,” she wrote. “For those who are off campus or need to leave campus, please use extra caution and vigilance.” Contact Lipscomb Security 24/7...
Shinn Center construction delayed for two more months

Shinn Center construction delayed for two more months

Construction on the Shinn Center will not begin for at least two months due to a storm drain in the building’s planned footprint that must be rerouted, Director of Campus Construction Mike Engelman told Lumination Network. The University originally planned to break ground early last fall, according to a press release from June. Engelman estimated that the building will be completed in July 2019 at the earliest. The release stated that event booking for the center “has already begun with an anticipated opening in the fall of 2018.” University spokeswoman Kim Chaudoin said there are no events booked for the Center, despite the press release. In an emailed statement to Lumination Network, Mike Fernandez, dean of the College of Entertainment and the Arts, said, “We had begun the process of creating a season of offerings.” “We are still excited about these plans but have stretched booking dates to a more realistic opening timeline to accommodate the change in construction,” Fernandez wrote. Engelman said the entire Ezell lot will be closed while the Shinn Center is built. It is unknown how the drain rerouting will affect parking. The current drain sits in front of the Ezell Center, right where the Shinn Center will be built. Junior CEA student Christian Bean will graduate before the Center is completed. Regardless, he said he is excited for his younger classmates who will benefit from it. “Some of our classrooms, right now, are overcrowded, so it is kind of needed,” Bean said. The film production major clarified that this wasn’t a “huge issue,” but that “as the film department grows, it’s going to really...

Marberry carries Bisons to home conference win

Rob Marberry’s career night carried the Bisons over the University of North Florida Ospreys 82-75 in Allen Arena Saturday. The redshirt junior center poured in 39 points on 18-of-24 shooting as Garrison Mathews struggled from everywhere. The ASUN’s leading scorer shot one-of-15 from the field and finished with nine points. Trip Day hit five threes and scored 22 off the bench to lead North Florida. Noah Horchler added 11 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Kenny Cooper was second on the Bisons in scoring with 11 and six assists. Lipscomb assisted on 22-of-33 field goals and turned the ball over just five times. The Ospreys finished with 18 turnovers and 17 assists. Coach Casey Alexander said the assist-to-turnover ration was “obviously the difference in the game.” “We felt like it was really important against their zone to pass and catch cleanly, and we would get good shots, so I give our guys credit for executing that,” Alexander said. North Florida got off to a fast start. Horchler knocked down a three-pointer on the Ospreys’ first possession and they jumped out to a 14-4 lead by the first media timeout. Rob Marberry scored four times in the following four minutes, but UNF drained three triples to keep a 25-15 lead at the under-12 stoppage. Trailing by 10 with less than five minutes left in the half, Kenny Cooper scored back-to-back layups to trigger a 14-4 run. Matt Rose’s corner three tied the game at 39 at the halftime bell. Alexander said getting back to basics on defense was what changed the game in the first half. “We made an adjustment...
