Lady Bisons pick up third straight win

Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team (9-14, 5-3 ASUN) beat the NJIT Highlanders (3-20, 1-7 ASUN) 66-58 Saturday to pick up its third straight win in conference play behind Loren Cagle’s 22-point, 13-rebound and six-assist night. Coach Greg Brown said his team was turning the corner after a couple of close losses, thanks to effort and confidence. “That’s a heck of a win right there, just being able to grind one out when it was ugly,” Brown said. “I think a lot of it is just confidence of playing, working hard in practice and you’re starting to see results.” Both teams were plagued by dry spells and shot under 40% from the field. The Highlanders turned the ball over 16 times and the Bisons added 13. Lipscomb outrebounded the Highlanders 39-38. Taylor Clark scored 13 points for the Bisons. Lauren Rau chipped in 10. The Highlanders attacked Lipscomb’s zone defense through the high post and led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter. Amber Morgan’s layup pushed the NJIT lead to 24-18 and coach Greg Brown called his first timeout. “We were a little flat-footed, I think, and we didn’t have as much pressure,” Brown said. “In the fourth quarter I think we did a better job pressuring the ball.” Loren Cagle made a contested three, then a layup through the foul to bring the Bisons back even. Loshaveon Jones gave Lipscomb the lead with a pull-up jumper, forcing the Highlanders to take a timeout of their own. Then the Bisons turned the ball over four times and missed four shots, allowing NJIT to retake the lead 36-34 at the half....

Gubernatorial candidates lay out platforms at forum

Five gubernatorial candidates discussed some of their visions for the state of Tennessee Thursday at a forum put on by the Tennessee Press Association. Republicans Randy Boyd, Bill Lee and Kay White were in attendance. Speaker of the House Beth Harwell planned to attend but was unable to make it due to the ongoing legislative session. Both declared Democratic candidates for governor, Minority Leader Rep. Craig Fitzhugh and former Nashville mayor Karl Dean, spoke at the event. The forum was led by TPA president Eric Barnes, the publisher of the Memphis Daily News. Questions of various topics were provided before the event by the editorial boards of various Tennessee newspapers as well as the sponsors of the event, including the ACLU of Tennessee. On the issues The candidates expressed some of their top priorities to the crowd of media professionals. All spoke on education. Boyd emphasized the importance of Tennessee’s “Drive to 55” program, which seeks to ensure that 55% of all Tennesseans hold a degree or certificate by 2025. Boyd helped develop the program as Commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development. White said she’d rather bring technical training back into high schools than push for the “Drive to 55.” Rep. Fitzhugh praised the new rigor requirements in Tennessee for better preparing students for college, but said he didn’t want students to lose the “joy of learning.” He said learning to read early so that students could “read to learn” was the ideal situation. “I am a pre-K believer,” Rep. Fitzhugh said, referring to pre-kindergarten education, and said he wanted early childhood education in every school....

Bisons roll over USC Upstate

All but one Lipscomb player scored as the Bisons cruised to a 92-78 victory over the USC Upstate Spartans Wednesday in Allen Arena. Centers Rob Marberry and George Brammeier dominated in the post. Marberry led all scorers with 24 points and missed just twice from the field. Brammeier added 14 off the bench. Lipscomb out-rebounded USC Upstate by 11 and scored 56 points in the paint to the Spartans’ 24. Coach Casey Alexander said the inside presence “helps the whole team.” “It takes a lot of the burden off,” Alexander said. “That was the biggest key.” Garrison Mathews rolled his left ankle and limped off early in the first half. The ASUN’s leading scorer returned a couple minutes later and finished with 10 points along with a team-leading 11 rebounds and three charges drawn. Kenny Cooper finished with 16 points. Zach Flener, who played the final 23 seconds of the game, was the only Bison not to score. Mike Cunningham led the Spartans with 20 points and five assists. Ramel Thompkins and Deion Holmes were the only other Spartans in double figures. Two Spartans fouled out. After a sloppy start for both teams, Lipscomb closed the first half on a 10-0 run and took a 42-29 lead into the locker room. The Bisons turned the ball over three times in four possessions to start the second period, allowing USC Upstate to bring the lead back into single digits. Coach Casey Alexander substituted all five players in favor of the bench unit of Brammeier, Asa Duvall, John Matt Merritt, Aaron Korn and Andrew Fleming. Brammeier’s dunk just before the under-16...

Men’s basketball stops conference skid versus Stetson

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team got back on track Saturday with a tense 85-82 home win over Stetson after three straight conference losses. The Hatters hung around all game, but only led for less than a minute in the second half. “We never played with any real confidence, and that’s my job to figure out how to push the right buttons to make that happen,” coach Casey Alexander said. “Good to get the win, way better than the alternative.” The Bisons were flustered by Florida Gulf Coast’s zone defense on Thursday, which helped spark the erasure of Lipscomb’s 18-point lead that night. Stetson came out in an aggressive zone. Alexander said he didn’t make drastic changes to his team’s zone offense strategy, because “it’s usually gonna come down to whether you make shots or not.” “If we did anything better tonight, we got the ball inside a lot more against them,” Alexander said. Game of runs Neither team led by more than five points in the first period. Hatters guard Divine Myles’s fast break layup at the halftime bell tied the game at 39. The teams traded runs throughout the second half. Eli Pepper dove for a loose ball early in the half and flipped it to Rob Marberry, who jammed it to cap the Bisons’ 11-2 run. Stetson made a run of its own to take a 55-54 lead just before the under-12 media timeout. Then Mathews found Rose for three to regain the lead. Myles’s three for the Hatters with 5:20 to go gave Stetson their next lead at 70-69 lead. Two possessions later, Myles rolled his...
