Men’s soccer earns Top 25 ranking after dream weekend

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team was ranked #23 in the United Soccer Coaches Division I National Poll in the first rankings release of the season Tuesday. The poll ranks the top 25 soccer teams in NCAA Division I men’s soccer every week. After being unranked in the preseason poll a week ago, the Bisons won 2-1 in a marquee match against the UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles followed by a 4-0 thrashing of the San Diego Toreros in San Diego. “We had a great first weekend and I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface of how good this team can be,” said head coach Charles Morrow. “It’s a little early to get too excited about national rankings [since] there is still a lot of work to be done by this group.” “If we can stay healthy and continue the work that we have just begun with the hunger and attitude to get better every day, I think this group could do some really special things,” said Morrow. The in-form Bisons squad was also given the top spot in the Atlantic Region of the ranking, finishing just ahead of second-place UNC Wilmington and fellow ASUN Conference members Bellarmine and Central Arkansas, who are ranked third and fourth respectively. The Indiana Hoosiers lead the national ranking after Week 1. Aside from ranking college soccer teams, United Soccer Coaches provides materials like education, job forums, and a membership program for soccer coaches at a variety of levels. According to their website, the ranking is an “indicator of week-to-week status of qualified programs”. The ranking does not have any effect on qualification...

Lipscomb Academy addresses ‘never appropriate’ Trent Dilfer sideline actions

Lipscomb Academy has addressed the controversy sparked by head football coach Trent Dilfer’s actions Friday night during a game against Independence High School. A viral video surfaced after the game on Friday night that has amassed over 11.4 million views on TikTok, a popular video sharing service. The video shows head coach and former Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback Dilfer grabbing and pushing his starting tight end, Beau Dawson. During the altercation, Dawson throws his helmet, which causes Dilfer to verbally reprimand him as well. BroBible, an account featuring sports highlights and lifestyle videos for athletes, posted the video that took off over the weekend, and social media users across all platforms have come to the defense of both player and coach. Dawson, a senior, is the son of Phil Dawson, another NFL veteran who played as a kicker for 20 years. The Mustangs’ special-teams coordinator, Phil is a longtime friend of Dilfer dating back to their professional days. In an email to the Lipscomb Academy community obtained by Lumination Network, Head of School Brad Schultz and Associate Head of School for Athletics Michelle York stated that it is “never appropriate for a Lipscomb employee to have a physical response with a student while frustrated or angry” and that they “are confident a similar event will not happen in the future.” The email reads in full: “Many of you by now are probably aware of an unfortunate incident between our head football coach, Trent Dilfer, and one of his players at this past Friday’s game. “Coach Dilfer apologized to the player, issued a comprehensive public statement on social media, and discussed the...

Academy football wins again amid Trent Dilfer controversy

On a night that has now become more well-known for a viral video than a dominant performance on the field, the Lipscomb Academy Mustangs football team beat the Independence Eagles 62-7. The Mustangs had control from the first moment Friday night at home. Senior running back Alex Broome earned three of his six touchdowns on the night in the first quarter alone. Those three touchdowns alongside an interception returned for a score put Lipscomb ahead 27-0 after one period of play. By halftime, the hosts led 34-7, and Broome’s continued dominance would lead to two more rushing touchdowns and a 34-yard reception from junior quarterback Luther Richesson for a sixth score. All told, the rushing attack spearheaded by Broome delivered seven scores, two of which came from backup running back Carlin Walker in the fourth quarter. The rushing yard totals told the story of the day, as Lipscomb accrued 314 yards on the ground while Independence managed only 30. However, it’s not Broome’s name circulating the internet after the win: the two trending names are Trent Dilfer and Beau Dawson. Bisons Beat Cross-Country Opponent UCLA

Bisons Beat Cross-Country Opponent UCLA

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team won their season opener against the UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles by a score of 2-1 on Thursday night. The loss to Lipscomb is the first season-opening defeat for UCLA in nine years, and the Bisons win their first match of the year for the second straight time. Comfortable on away turf from the opening whistle, Lipscomb found an early opener when Elon transfer Burl Shepherd earned his first goal in purple and gold, finishing a deflected shot from sophomore Tyrece Spicer. Shepherd, a junior from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, played every minute of his opening match with the Bisons. Credited with the assist on the play, Trinidad and Tobago native Spicer picked up where he left off last season as a creator. Spicer occupied his typical right wing position for the majority of the match, and opposite him was graduate transfer Bakary Bagayoko of Bronx, New York. The Cumberland University transfer found himself involved in many of Lipscomb’s attacking chances, and despite being unable to find the scoresheet, Bagayoko did get a shot away and was impactful all night long. After the early goal, UCLA settled down and began to work away at finding an equalizer. Lipscomb’s four-back defensive unit were strong and solid all night long, and all four defenders played the full 90 minutes for head coach Charles Morrow. Despite their best efforts, though, the Bruins would eventually find their goal through Tucker Lepley in the 33rd minute, moving the score to 1-1 and bringing the home side to the halftime break on level terms. It was a familiar scoring source who...

Women’s soccer takes victory in match against Miami Hurricanes

CORAL GABLES, FL – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team defeated the Miami Hurricanes 2-0 in their first away match of the season. With the win over Miami, who represents the Atlantic Coast Conference, Lipscomb earns its second triumph in two attempts this year against a Power Five conference opponent. They bested Mississippi State 2-1 in their opening match of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper CJ Graham starred for the Bisons, earning a clean sheet despite facing 13 shots from the Hurricanes. She was forced to make four saves on the evening in order to keep Miami out of her goal for all 90 minutes. Alongside Graham, defenders Emily Patti, Katia Hanger, and Logan McFadden put in full shifts as well, playing in every single minute of the match. McFadden, a Birmingham, Alabama, native, continued her streak of playing in every minute of every match all season for the Bisons. In the attack, Lipscomb’s strikeforce was potent as ever. VCU transfer and Waldorf, Maryland-born Kale’a Perry found the back of the net for the second straight match, while Haley Williams, a freshman from St. Simons Island, Georgia, scored off the bench. Williams got the breakthrough goal with a left-footed effort into the bottom corner near the halftime whistle, and on the other side of the break, Perry found the back of the net with the same foot off an assist from debutant Allie Dunn. The junior winger from Oak Ridge started the match and contributed to a shot and the Perry assist in her 42 minutes. Junior center midfielder Cami Rogers led Lipscomb in shots and shots on goal, with three...
