Two Lipscomb graduates to attend Princeton grad school in fall

This fall two Lipscomb graduates are headed to Princeton University to pursue a Master’s of Divinity degree. Lauren Calvin and John Paul Cooke both graduated valedictorian from Lipscomb in May of 2014. Because of the influence of Lipscomb professors, both Calvin and Cooke decided that attending a graduate school was in their futures. During her undergraduate career, Calvin discovered her many gifts in ministry. “My psychology professor, Dr. Chris Gonzalez, was the first person who made me believe I was capable of doing well in grad school,” said Calvin. Not only was Calvin’s calling affirmed by Dr. Gonzalez, but also Dean Barham. “My Intro to Ministry professor, Dean Barham, had enough faith in me to ask me to speak at Woodmont Hills Church of Christ in the spring of 2013,” said Calvin, “He believed I was ‘called to preach.’” Because of the strong encouragement from her professors, Calvin decided on the possibility of an independent career in ministry as a writer and public speaker. After speaking at Woodmont Hills and carving a path for her future, Calvin began seriously looking at graduate schools. Meanwhile, Cooke also affirmed his graduate school potential at an apprenticeship with Otter Creek Church of Christ. “Dr. Walter Surdacki placed me in a youth ministry apprenticeship my second year that lasted until I graduated,” said Cooke, “This was a great opportunity for me to learn and practice skills that I learned in the classroom.” In December, Calvin and Cooke began the application process, applying to Duke, Princeton, Emory and Yale. “Princeton’s application process was probably the most thorough, requiring a personal statement, resume, academic writing...

Lipscomb’s Starbucks celebrates grand reopening

After being closed for two weeks, Lipscomb’s Starbucks held its grand reopening on Friday. With a more open space, the new environment was intentionally made for a greater community feel. “It looks really nice in here. There’s a really long table here in the middle, kind of going for that fellowship and community type feel,” said senior student and Starbucks worker Cameron Minton. The renovation provides several spots to work or meet, including the large rectangular table placed in the center of the space that can seat around 20 people. “This table reminds me of a family table. It’s more motivational, and the spirit of Starbucks just makes you feel good — the brightness, the music,” said Chick-Fil-A supervisor Brandi Marshall. Not only did the space get a complete renovation the Starbucks staff did as well. According to food court supervisor Kayla Staelens, the dining staff will be hiring new crew members. “We’ll have more people serving faster. We have two cash registers, so hopefully the ordering process will go faster,” said Staelens. Created with Admarket’s...
Lumination’s Erin Turner shares CMA Fest experience

Lumination’s Erin Turner shares CMA Fest experience

I am not a huge modern country music fan, but when I heard about the opportunity to be a photographer on the CMA Award of Merit Photo team, I knew had to apply. I began shooting for Lumination during the second semester of my freshman year, and around the same time I started a semester-long internship at The Tennessean as a news photographer. During my freshman year, I tried to seek out all the opportunities I possibly could. I saw shooting the CMA Fest as a great opportunity to meet new people, build my portfolio and just have a little fun this summer. In short, I sent CMA my portfolio and soon heard back that I was accepted on to the team. There were five student photographers on the team, along with several other veteran photographers in the area to cover the rest. The team had a meeting about a month before the fest to see how things would go, and then June 5 quickly rolled around the corner. When everything is said and done, CMA will pick the top student photographer who had the best overall images. That student will receive an award and have the opportunity to attend the CMA Awards in November. The first day of the fest started out horribly for me. I had never been before, and I was completely clueless on all the locations. I arrived late for my first assignment and spent about an hour just trying to figure out where the CMA offices were in the Music City Center. I would go up to worker after worker, each of them sending...
