Lipscomb cheerleaders react to first win at ASUN Championship

It’s Thursday, March 1, in Allen Arena. The Bisons have just trounced the Jacksonville Dolphins in the conference tournament to stamp their ticket to the ASUN championship game for the first time in 12 years. Now, it’s time to celebrate. The cheerleading team is screaming so loud my ears are ringing beccause we all know what happens next. We have one day to prepare to jump on a plane and takeoff for Ft. Myers, Florida, to take on the No. 1 seeded Eagles. Head cheerleading coach Sherie Eubanks quickly hands out our flight assignments with itineraries, and I run home to start packing for my 5 a.m. flight on Saturday morning. I can’t sleep that night because I am so excited about getting the opportunity to cheer in the Conference Championship game my senior year. On Saturday morning, my teammates roll into the airport one by one, exhausted but so ecstatic for this new opportunity. Our flight takes us to Chicago where we have a three hour layover, and then we are just hours away from our destination and warm, sandy beaches. We arrive at our condo on the beach around 8:00 that night, and we are all so pumped up about the big game on Sunday, we rush to bed like kids on Christmas Eve awaiting their many presents. This is what we have been dreaming of all season, and it is just within our grasp. The Sunday of the game is hectic. We drive to eat, and the streets are flooded with blue and green in anticipation for the championship game. People along the streets and in...

Softball shuts out Belmont 5-0 in Tuesday night tilt

It was no coincidence that the song “Takin’ Care of Business” was blaring in E.S. Rose Park as Lipscomb stepped on the field because that’s exactly what the Bisons did in their 5-0 shutout over Belmont. It was a picture-perfect day for the annual “Battle of the Boulevard” face-off. The field was freshly groomed with a jaw-dropping Nashville skyline in the horizon. The Lady Bisons were more than ready to hit the field Tuesday night after resting since last Thursday’s win over Chattanooga. “It felt like we were almost having to force our energy and effort at times,” head coach Kristin Ryman said. “We had to work through that and get back into a game mode. It is nice to get some rest, but there is something to be said about being in game mode too.” Lipscomb landed three runs in just the second inning following a beautiful two-RBI single by Abby Fenichel. “On a night when the ball wasn’t flying off of bats for either team I thought Abby had some really well-hit balls,” Ryman said. Fenichel would go on to lead the pack with three runs bated in and two hits. Another easy run was scored in the fourth off of a bloop single to left field from Fenichel. Belmont appeared to be in a frenzy as it switched out its second baseman, catcher and shortstop after Lipscomb’s hot start. The Lady Bisons were unscathed by the changes and remained in the driver’s seat. The highlight of Lipscomb’s defense was ace Mandy Jordan. Jordan struck out 13 batters, allowed four hits and did not walk a single...

Lipscomb baseball loses to Vanderbilt at First Tennessee Park

Some nights nothing seems to work out as planned. This was the case for Lipscomb (14-9) as the team fell to Vanderbilt (17-9) 10-0 Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park. Zeke Dodson broke up the no hitter for Vanderbilt’s sophomore right-handed pitcher Chandler Day in the bottom of ninth with two outs.   “Their guy pitched a fantastic game and I don’t want to take anything away from him, but on top of him holding us hit-less for eight innings, we did a lot of other things that aren’t typical for our team,” head coach Jeff Forehand said. “I wish Zeke’s hit wasn’t our only highlight but to keep fighting on that and to push through and not get a no-hitter is an accomplishment, but a small one at best.”  One highlight that came for Lipscomb happened in the first inning as Michael Gigliotti made a top-10 catch to rob Julian Infante of a two-run home run. “Michael Gigliotti’s catch was probably one of the best plays I’ve seen in 25 years and I thought that would be a spark for us but the spark just tapered away,” Forehand said. The game was scoreless up until the third inning when Vanderbilt began to warm up. Stephen Scott got the offense moving with an RBI single to put the Commodores on the board 1-0. Vanderbilt’s bats stayed hot as the team tallied on three more runs in the next inning while Lipscomb struggled through a pitching change before escaping the inning 4-0. Lipscomb held the Commodores in the 6th inning but would give up six more runs before the game came to a close. Recent...

Lady Bisons take down the Toppers in doubleheader

Get your brooms out, folks. In a battle of young rosters, Lipscomb (23-7) defeated Conference USA foe Western Kentucky (18-15) in a mid-week doubleheader to snag a seventh consecutive win. Western Kentucky has one of the youngest teams in the country with nine freshman, two sophomores, three juniors and two seniors. Lipscomb follows closely with six freshman, four sophomores, three juniors and three seniors. The two teams have met 27 times with Lipscomb leading the way in the series. Sophomore pitcher Mandy Jordan showed why she is this week’s ASUN Pitcher of the Week and TSWA Pitcher of the Week as she led her team to victory with 12 strikeouts and an almost perfect game. “I thought Mandy did a great job in game one,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “I don’t feel like they were really able to generate anything against her until that home run in the seventh.” Freshman Chloe Yeager got things started on offense with a RBI in the top of the second to put Lipscomb on the board 1-0. Senior Kasey Gibson followed up with two runs batted in to extend the lead 3-0. Jordan continued the momentum by cranking up the heat in the fifth inning and striking out three Hilltoppers in a row. Jordan kissed the no-hitter and shutout goodbye when Jordan Mauch for WKU smashed a home run over right-center field in the top of the seventh inning. Lipscomb held off the Hilltoppers for the remainder of the game as they defeated WKU 4-1 in the first game. “We only had six hits on the board, but I’m not disappointed with...
Lady Bisons take down Campbell 5-2

Lady Bisons take down Campbell 5-2

The glaring sun wasn’t the only bright spot for Lipscomb’s Lady Bisons as they defeated Campbell’s Lady Camels 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Draper Diamond.  The Lady Bisons (16-5) have extended their record to a seven-game winning streak and have won 10 of their last 11 games. Campbell (14-10) traveled to Lipscomb after an 8-6 win at Austin Peay earlier that day. Lipscomb now leads the series 14-5 over the former ASUN member Campbell.  “We didn’t have the sharpest start, and that’s something we’ve talked about that we need to do a better job of,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman noted. “We need to do a better job during the midweeks of being the aggressor and punching first instead of getting punched first.” Much of Lipscomb’s success can be credited to the diamond. Sophomore Mandy Jordan was a force to be reckoned with as she struck out 12 batters to land her 10th win of the season.  “Mandy made some key pitches when we needed them, and our offense came through late,” Ryman said. “Every time we seem to throw a challenge her way, she finds a way to elevate.” Campbell came out hot with a quick double and put a run on the board soon after.  The quick run by Campbell ignited a flame inside Jordan as she struck out the next three batters to close out the inning.  The Lady Camels continued to carry the momentum on offense as they landed their second double in three innings to get on base. Jordan struck back with a quick strikeout followed by a foul line layout by Sarah Higgins to...
