Fall’s arrival signals one of the most exciting times of the year: autumn fashion staples. The leaves are finally beginning to dance toward the ground, and temperatures are dropping below 70 degrees here in Nashville, at last! With the turn of the seasons comes the changing of attire. Finally, we can pack up those shorts and tanks (at least for now — according to my Tennessee native friends, it can be 75 degrees on Christmas) and pull out the jeans, cute little ankle boots and sweaters. Trends that reappear each year and will never go out of style include flannels paired with jeans. A way to make this a bit more fashionable is to wear a contrasting or coordinating tank underneath the flannel. Match these layers with a cute pair of jeans — maybe a pair with a few rips. Leave the flannel unbuttoned so you can show off your coordination or contrasting skills (whichever you choose) and tie the flannel at the bottom. Add a statement necklace to make the outfit even more outstanding. Corduroy skirts are in style this season. Pair them with a long bell sleeve top, or a short sleeve with a cardigan. These corduroy skirts can be found in all kinds of colors — brown, red, light pink, green. Any of them work well for fall. In addition to corduroy skirts, jean skirts are also something that can work well for fall. Honestly, though, jean skirts are good all year round. Fall is in full swing as Lipscomb’s department of Fashion and Design continued their second event of the 2018 Fall Fashion Series. Evening wear designer, Kevan Hall, presented some of his Spring designs and spoke about his career in the fashion industry. The event was hosted at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens by Gus Mayer and Style Blueprint. The event was free to any student willing to pre-register. The show offered free food and drinks, and advice from Hall who has dressed many famous icons on the red carpet. Hall described his early beginnings in the industry. He explained he wanted to be a designer since he was 7 years old. He worked until he was eventually able to create his own Kevan Hall Collection, and in the process has designed for Michelle Obama, Vanessa Williams and Katherine Heigl. Established in 1997, the Caroline J. Cross Chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences funded the event. The chair was created to “provide enrichment opportunities to students in this field.” Caroline Cross, the founder of the chair, said she wished that they could do a better job at reaching the community. She wants these events to reach out to not only students at Lipscomb but other students and anyone interested in fashion as well. “This is the first time we’ve done this,” Cross said, adding, “but I just wish something could be done about their advertisement.” She noted that she was happy to see that Style Blueprint, an online fashion publication, was there to help host the event, and she wants more light brought to the continued series. For the past two years, I have had my mind set on coming to Nashville to pursue my dreams of fashion and mission work. That’s exactly what I’m here to do: study fashion merchandising and business as missions, with the hopes of starting a clothing company to benefit people in need. From the first time I visited Nashville during my junior year, I knew I was meant to be a southern belle. Being from Cleveland, Ohio, the trends here are so different from home, and I couldn’t wait to embrace them. Since moving here in August to start my freshman year, though, I have realized that the trends and styles are not what I thought they were. Sure, they’re still different from home, but not what I envisioned. Turns out that it’s not all cowgirl boots and gingham all day every day down here. Good to know. I am rooming with a sweet friend who is a Tennessee native. As we pick out our clothes for the day, it has been entertaining and interesting to see how the styles of the North and South differ. However, it is not just with her. The North and South overall definitely have different trends. Shoes: First of all, Chacos are NOT a thing up north. I came to Summer Scholars in 2017 (where I met my sweet roomie!) and knew nothing of them. I was so confused when, in a round of Fruit Basket Turnover calling for all those with Chacos to move, I was one of few who did not move.
