Coming off two straight losses during the ASUN-MAAC challenge last weekend, Lipscomb was looking to bounce back at home against the Eastern Illinois Panthers Sunday afternoon. Without starting sophomore center Dorie Harrison and starting junior guard Sydney Shelton — the Bisons had quite a challenge.giving their leading scorer, freshman guard Jalyn Holcomb, a supporting cast. Much of the first half was controlled by the Panthers’ disruptive offense in the paint, behind 6’1” sophomore center Abby Wahl’s 12 first-half points. Fall was short-lived on Lipscomb’s campus this year. There only were few days of warm fall colors on the trees before things began to change, with and more frigid air and crisp wind and even a bit of snow spitting a bit just a few days into autumn. The first meeting of the season between Belmont and Lipscomb was everything fans could expect and more between the closest rivalry in NCAA Division I basketball. The energy was electric in Allen Arena during the hard-fought battle, but Lipscomb came up just short losing 73-67 to the Bruins. “We didn’t get the result we wanted, but we sure played hard,” says head coach Lennie Acuff. “We got down pretty good in the second half and was short-handed the last 10 minutes, but our guys kept fighting, clawing and scraping their way to stay in it,”. This was the first time Casey Alexander returned to Allen Arena for a game after taking the head coach position at Belmont. Alexander was the head coach at Lipscomb for six seasons leading the team to an NCAA Tournament appearance and an NIT Finals appearance just last year. “Belmont is a good team and they’ve been playing fantastic, but we had a chance tonight and that’s all we wanted at the end. I was really, really proud of our guy,” says Acuff. Lipscomb entered halftime up by one, 33-32, after going on a 10-0 and a 12-5 run at the end of the first half. Carleigh Short hit a second chance three with 12.8 seconds on the clock to tie the home opening game ultimately resulting in a 71-69 victory for the Lady Bisons against Northern Kentucky in Head Coach Lauren Sumski’s home debut. “She’s [Carleigh] been a big shot maker her entire career,” said Sumski. “We knew we wanted to get her a look, this was a play we put in earlier that they executed really well so I was really excited for her to knock down that shot.” After Short’s game-tying three, redshirt-sophomore Dorie Harrison sunk a pair of free throws to win the game “We completely trusted Dorie,” said Carleigh Short. “We knew she was gonna hit both of them, so in our minds, we were just saying, ‘nothing long’ because we knew they couldn’t get a layup they had to throw it long and so Dorie stepped up big and got the win for us.” To read the full story by Mckenzi Harris click here. What started as a double-digit lead turned into a difficult 79-78 loss for the Bisons against the TSU Tigers on Tuesday night. After an almost-comeback for the Bisons led by KJ Johnson, the Tigers took off with a quick drive to win the game. During the first half, Lipscomb led by as many as 11 points, a quick and promising lead on the Tigers. The team struggled without Ahsan Asadullah on the court. The Bisons ran the offense through senior Michael Buckland. Buckland scored a season-high of 14 points. However, the struggles didn’t show much until the second half. Tennessee State opened the second half with a 15-6 run and a three, putting them ahead 55-50. As the half continued, the Tigers flipped the game and held a lead, putting the Bisons 12 points behind with three minutes left on the clock. That’s when freshman KJ Johnson took the game back over, at least temporarily. Johnson drove a shot in from the left-wing, banking a shot off the window with seven seconds remaining on the clock. Johnson’s shot to put the Bisons back on top 78-77. TSU’s Michael Littlejohn then drove the ball the length of the floor, putting the Tigers back in the lead, 79-78 with 0.1 seconds remaining. In the first road game of the season, the Bisons shot 50 percent from the floor, 27 of 54 attempts, and hit 17 for 12 in free throws, a 71 percent clip. The Lipscomb volleyball team fell in a tough three-setter to Florida Gulf Coast University in its final home game of the 2019 season. The Eagles, standing at first in the ASUN, did not leave the Bisons, standing at number four, much room for error. The Bisons held their own in the first set, but after much back-and-forth FGCU took the first set 25-21. “I really liked how we came out in the first set, and I thought we did a nice job in the second as well,” said coach Brandon Rosenthal. “Unfortunately we had a player bang her head and cut herself. We had to pause and switch up, but that is part of the game of volleyball.” Lipscomb had a spark starting off the second set leading 8-2. This caused FGCU to call a timeout, and they went on a run that led them to win the set 25-19. “At just a couple of crucial points, we weren’t as disciplined as we can be,” said Rosenthal. “It’s not a question of skill, it’s just a matter of us executing.” The Bisons did not have much fight left in the third set, with a total of 11 errors. The Eagles took it 25-14. “I thought we did a really nice job of extending some rallies,” Rosenthal said. “At the end of the day when you play a top team like FGCU, they make you earn points,” he said. “We had a couple of really good chances, but we just couldn’t finish.
