Lady Bisons fall in battle against Stetson Hatters

Lipscomb’s Lady Bisons (3-15) lost their fifth game in a row 91-66 to the Stetson Hatters (14-4) Monday night in Allen Arena. The Lady Bisons have now lost 12 of their last 14 games. After trailing 48-26 at halftime, Lipscomb outscored Stetson by 10 in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 12. However, that was the closest the team would get in the second half as Stetson would out-score Lipscomb 29-16 in the 4th quarter. “We played great in the 3rd quarter, but defensively the 4th quarter killed us,” Head Coach Greg Brown said. “I applaud our team’s effort, but our execution has to be a whole lot better defensively.” For Lipscomb, junior guard Loren Cagle was the lone highlight as she flirted with a triple-double. She finished with nine points, eight rebounds and 11 assists. “Loren really filled up the stat sheet for our team, and she provided a much needed spark for our team,” Brown noted. This isn’t the first time the Lady Bisons have lost by a lot. They are ranked 343 out of 345 teams with a -22.9 scoring margin. Stetson was led by guard Brianti Saunders, as she led all players with 24 points. This wasn’t Saunders first successful game against Lipscomb. In her eight career games against Lipscomb, she averaged 23.7 points per game, including three 30-point games. Stetson’s forward, Sarah Sagerer, had a huge impact on the game by blocking shot after shot. She came into the game as the 7th best shot blocker in the nation, and her four blocks against the Lady Bisons moved her up to 5th in the...

Bisons drop first conference game in thriller

It was a battle of conference unbeatens, and it lived up to the hype, as the Lipscomb men’s basketball team (10-10, 2-1) took on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles (14-5, 3-0). The Bisons fought back from two double-digit deficits in both halves but ultimately fell 84-80.    Early on the Eagles dominated with their length and athleticism, getting deflections and forcing turnovers. They led the game 21-14. Christian Terrell and Demetris Morant led FGCU as they had 17 of the first 27 points. Both finished with double-figures, 15 and 14 points, respectively. For Lipscomb, sophomore Garrison Mathews led the way for the Bisons, with 10 points in the first half. However, the Bisons found themselves down 34-23 with less than six minutes remaining in the first half. The Bisons then found their stride and sprinted out to end the half on a 16-6 run to tie the game at 40 going into halftime. The run was fueled by Mathews, along with senior Josh Williams and a huge and-one opportunity converted by freshman Michael Buckland. “I was very pleased with their effort,” head coach Casey Alexander said. “I thought we played hard enough to win, and the desire was there.” Lipscomb took its first lead with a Williams three-pointer early in the second half, 43-42. The Eagles and Bisons traded baskets and the lead for the next few minutes. FGCU eventually used a 7-0 midway through the second half and took a nine-point lead thanks to Zach Johnson, who finished with 23 points. FGCU broke the game open after going back-and-forth with Lipscomb after its big run. The lead got...

Lady Bisons fall short in tough loss against FGCU

Lipscomb (3-14, 0-2) suffered a tough loss to Florida Gulf Coast (13-6, 2-0) in Allen Arena on Saturday afternoon with a final score of 63-90. The Lady Bisons kept in pace with the aggressive team with a leading score during the first period, but FGCU took the lead toward the end of the second period. With a halftime score of 28-44, Lipscomb came out strong in an effort to close the 16 point FGCU lead. Within the third minute of the third period, FGCU had already fouled five times allowing the Lady Bisons to gain multiple free throw points, which ended up being one third of their total points. “Offensively we did a good job of getting the ball inside,” Head Coach Greg Brown said. “We got to the free throw line and shot 26 free throws, and that’s excellent right there.” The Lady Bisons topped FGCU in number of free throws and rebounds; however, they were unable to return within a 20 point range of FGCU. “What we didn’t do well is we knew we had to take away their lane-right drives, and we didn’t take away their open threes,” Coach Brown said. “We didn’t consistently do that and that gave us that result there.” Despite the devastating lead by FGCU, the Lady Bisons continued to play aggressively until the end, letting FGCU score no more than nine points in the last period. Junior Riley Northway led the Lady Bisons with a score of 17 points, while junior Morgan Turner led with six rebounds and junior Loren Cagle gained a team-best four assists. The Lady Bisons play their...

Bisons topple Stetson, earn sixth straight victory

For the first time since the 2008-09 season, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team has won six straight games and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Bisons made quick work of Stetson on Thursday night, dominating from the opening tip and cruising to a 94-68 victory in Allen Arena. Lipscomb never trailed in the game, jumping out to a quick lead on several backdoor cuts for layups. The Bisons struggled from the 3-point line all night, going just 2-17, but used strong post play and aggressive driving to dismantle Stetson’s defense. “The first half was the best we’ve played all year,” Coach Casey Alexander said after the game. “That was evidenced by the fact that we were 2-12 from three and still had a 22 point lead, so I was very pleased with that.” Freshman guard Kenny Cooper sparked a 19-5 run at the end of the first half to extend the lead to 49-27. He got to the hoop with ease all night and finished with 14 points on 6-7 shooting. “Probably the best part of the night for me was seeing Kenny play with a different gear,” Alexander said. “Hopefully he can use this and take off from here.” The most dominating part of the night, however, came from the Lipscomb big-men. Forward Eli Pepper recorded a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds and Center Rob Marberry scored 23 points on 10-13 shooting to lead the Bisons in scoring. Lipscomb manhandled Stetson on the boards 47-28. “Tonight they (the bigs) were particularly important because we weren’t scoring from the 3-point-line like we usually do,” Alexander...
President Lowry ushers in new semester with ‘Respect Leads’

President Lowry ushers in new semester with ‘Respect Leads’

For the first Tuesday morning chapel of the Spring 2017 semester, President Randy Lowry updated students on the campus’ construction and made some special announcements about the upcoming year. Lowry announced that the new engineering building is now open, but it is still incomplete. The new parking lot adjacent to it is neither open nor complete, but those in charge of the project found a way to expand the lot by 60 parking spots. The construction team is scheduled to pour the asphalt once the weather warms up. Transitioning into his chapel message, Lowry shared an anecdote that stressed the importance of unity. He announced that the upcoming chapels will be geared toward achieving a sense of community. “Jesus calls us to be a community unified,” Lowry said. “People on the outside don’t understand it. We begin to have that community by having respect for one another.” He told an anecdote similar to that of the Good Samaritan in order to emphasize that, despite our differences, we are all part of God’s creation, and must respect one another in order to achieve the sense of community. Lowry warned that the following chapel speakers might present issues the student body might not feel comfortable talking about, let alone agree with. “The key,” Lowry emphasized, “is respect.” Scheduled keynote speakers include Christian musician Moriah Peters and former NBA star Magic Johnson. Lowry also spoke of controversial issues as situations that needed addressing. “We will respond to difficult moments because it’s the right thing to do.” In having diverse chapel speakers, Lowry hopes this will help the student body understand multiple viewpoints, have respect for...
‘SING’ is family-friendly, entertaining musical that falls a little flat

‘SING’ is family-friendly, entertaining musical that falls a little flat

With an all-star cast and several hit songs, SING is exactly what you’d expect from an average musical — shining in musical numbers, lacking in an original story. The story revolves around Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) — an optimistic, sometimes annoying Koala who fell in love with musical theater at a young age — and his theater, which is not doing as hot as it once did back in its glory days when young Nana Noodleman (Jennifer Hudson) was still performing. However, Moon comes up with a surefire plan to revive his theater — a singing competition (basically American Idol with animals). Contestants pour in for auditions in hopes to get their hands on some of the prize money, but he narrows it down to the lucky few: Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) — the housewife pig who is currently just using her voice for lullabies to her many piglets, Mike (Seth McFarlane) — a jazzy mouse who’s down on his luck, Ash (Scarlett Johansson) — the husky-voiced, better half of a hard rock, porcupine duo, Gunter (Nick Kroll) — Rosita’s entertaining, disco-loving partner and Johnny (Taron Egerton) a young, misunderstood gorilla with a natural talent for crooning. Meena (Tori Kelly), a shy elephant with some powerful vocals, also eventually makes her way into the production. This summer, Illumination proved its worth outside of the Despicable Me universe with the highly enjoyable, The Secret Life of Pets. Noting the all-star cast and hit songs in SING’s amusing trailer and recalling the entertaining action from Secret Life, I likely went in with too high of expectations. SING doesn’t quite reach its potential and falls...
