Health Week is only the jumping off point for Campus Rec

With health week being this last week, Lipscomb students and the Campus Rec staff are getting fitter than ever. That is not all that the men and women in the SAC have planned for this semester, though. “Campus Rec has three different entities; wellness, intramurals and outdoor adventure,” said Director of Campus Recreation, Emily Harris. “Those three programs have been branded going into the year and we have a grad assistant that is an expert in the field.” Harris said that they already have several trips planned for this semester, including white water rafting and horseback riding in October. While those will cost students a bit of cash, the other trips such as hiking or camping will be free. One of the graduate assistants is also organizing a running club. Right now, Dominique Jacoy is training students three mornings a week in preparation for a 5K this fall. Right now, members of the club are readying themselves for a fundraiser to get uniforms for the run. Next spring, Jacoy’s goal is for the club to run a half-marathon. With the improvements in the SAC, Campus Rec is seeing rapid growth in all their programs. “We now have weight room supervisors that are there from 3-8 on Monday thru Friday, Harris said. “They are there for safety and to help the students better their workout capacity or their fitness level. They’re also there to show students how to use the equipment.” One big change that Harris and her staff made was changing the cost of group fitness classes. They didn’t just change – now, classes like zumba, hip-hop and spinning...

Family Weekend tips and tricks

There are already a record number of people on campus, and this weekend there will be several more. With Family Weekend here the same time as Cowboy Show, we have some tips for those coming in to visit. Parking: When you find a place, take it. No need to try and find a better one. On Lipscomb’s campus, an open spot, is the best spot. Food: Don’t be afraid to eat on campus. We have sushi, Chick-fil-A, Blue Coast Burrito and the cafeteria. Plus, The parents will be a meal a day this weekend. However, if you want to venture off campus, there are several options such as Carraba’s, Cheesecake Factory, Pei Wei, Athens, Burger Up and a lot more other places right in Green Hills. Traffic: Prepare for delays, trust me. Hillsboro road is one of the worst roads in America – and I am not joking. Traffic is terrible in Green Hills, but once you get where you are going, it’s totally worth it. We hope this helps, and if it doesn’t maybe this week’s Nashville Spotlight can help you out. Lipscomb’s 4,000th student marks beginning of new era

Lipscomb enrollment has reached over 4,000 students for the first time in school history. After 4 years of academic investment, Lipscomb is now celebrating this new enrollment milestone. In 2005, the university’s board of trustees approved a five-year investment that pumped an average of $1 million dollars a month into campus and academics. The plan resulted in a renovated campus landscape, 38 new programs of study, and 79 new full-time faculty hired.  Lipscomb reached 3,000 students in 2008 and now 4,000 this fall. Overall, the university has enjoyed a 59 percent enrollment growth rate since 2005. Lumination News caught up with the 4,000th student Jessica Wills, and asked for her take on helping Lipscomb reach this milestone.   Please upgrade your...

Former Lipscomb student and baseball player stars in “Moneyball”

It’s not every day you get to talk to a guy who has acted alongside such major Hollywood talents as Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Chris Pratt. It’s also not every day that this person is a former Lipscomb baseball player. Moneyball actor Casey Bond came back to the place where he spent his senior year of college this week to talk about his role as Chad Bradford in the book-turned-movie blockbuster. Casey Bond, former Lipscomb center fielder, recently acted in the new film Moneyball (based on the book by Michael Lewis). In the film, Bond’s character is a relief pitcher who played for the Oakland A’s during the 2002 season where the film gets its focus. Bond said he always had dreams of being a baseball player. Ever since childhood, baseball has been his passion. He played college ball at Birmingham-Southern in Alabama for three years until the school dropped the division one program. Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand arrived at the same time as Bond and offered him a position on the Lipscomb team as a captain and a center fielder. “I figured this was a great place to go for my senior year.” Bond remembers. In 2007, Bond was drafted into the major leagues with the San Francisco Giants. During the off-seasons, Bond would return to Nashville to take acting classes with The Actor’s School in Cool Springs and finish up school.  After his time in the Major Leagues, Bond decided to venture into the world of Hollywood acting. “I loved movies, and I just decided it was something I wanted to do,” he...
Redbox Report: Sept. 27th – Oct. 3rd

Redbox Report: Sept. 27th – Oct. 3rd

It’s hard to believe we are already within the final lap of September. As the month dwindles down, here are some Redbox choices to satisfy your film needs. TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (PG-13, 140 minutes-featuring Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) *BLU-RAY OPTION RECOMMENDED The film will be on Redbox this Friday (9/30). While I have a special spot in my heart for the first Transformers film, I have a special place in the trash can for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I could go on all day on why the second installment just flat out reeks, but thankfully, director Michael Bay made up for the lousy second film with Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The best word to describe this film is insane. Bay and crew deliver some enthralling action sequences on top of a pretty interesting plot. The “cheesy” humor may be back, but it’s dialed down.  I totally recommend this film for fans of the series (yes, the 2nd film has a few fans) or for anyone who is just in the mood for almost two and a half hours of pure Bayhem (yep, that’s a word…kind of).   TRUE GRIT (PG-13, 110 minutes-featuring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld, and Josh Brolin)    *BLU-RAY OPTION RECOMMENDED Even though this title was released on Redbox this past summer (and in theaters back during December 2010), I still want to bring it up while it’s still out. True Grit was one of my favorite films from 2010. The Coen Brothers (O Brother, Where Art Thou) have directed the second adaptation of the classic novel. The first adaptation, the John...

Tau Phi to present 32nd annual Cowboy Show this weekend

The 32nd annual Cowboy Show, presented by Tau Phi, will be this Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7:00 p.m. in Collins Alumni Auditorium. The show is hosted and performed by members of the men’s social club and involves a few of Lipscomb’s talented female students, as well. Except for Singarama, it is Lipscomb’s largest student-led production. Carter Hamric, Tau Phi president and this year’s director, said the tradition showcases Lipscomb’s talent. “The thing about Cowboy Show is that, as an overall production it’s done right,” he said. “We bring in professionals to play along with us. It’s more than just karaoke. We audition the girls to sing ,so all of the girls are just really, really talented. Some of the guys are good, and the ones that aren’t good are really, really entertaining.” Please upgrade your browser This year’s assistant directors are Brandon Smith, Taylor Farnsworth and Lindsay Hartselle. Tau Phi alumni Andrew Glass and Andrew Smith will be hosting the show. “As a director, I love seeing people get better,” Hamric said, “and things start to come together as we get closer to the show. It’s really exciting.” In addition to Lipscomb students, Pat Flynn, Nashville singer/songwriter and producer, will return with his band to lead the show. Flynn, who has been in the music industry for over 25 years, has worked with some of country’s biggest stars. According to Hamric, since Flynn has participated in the Cowboy Show so many years, he is now considered an honorary member of Tau Phi. Hamric said Cowboy Show always impresses the audience. “I think people leave wowed at some of the...
