A capella singers perform at spring concert

For college students, free entertainment is always a plus, and Lipscomb University students need to look no further than Lipscomb’s own A Cappella Singers. The choral group performed their spring concert on April 12, 2010 in Willard Collins Alumni Auditorium. This was the group’s 16th program of the 2009-2010 concert season, and they will still have several more performances. The College of Arts and Sciences School of Fine Performing Arts Department of Music presented GLORIA! Monteverdi and Vivaldi. A section of Gloria was performed comprised of twelve songs sung by the A Cappella Singers conducted by Dr. Gary P. Wilson, accompanied by an orchestra coordinated by Carolyn Wann Bailey. Dr. Gary P. Wilson is a conductor, scholar, and teacher. His responsibilities as Director of Choral Activities include conducting the A Cappella Singers, overseeing the choral/vocal program, and directing the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. He teaches choral conducting methods, voice, and music theory. The A Cappella Singers are a premiere choral ensemble at Lipscomb University. The group is comprised of about 75 members and is open to those in various degree programs across campus. Each year the group performs a wide variety of genres and styles. Melanie Matthews, a sophomore from Gulf Breeze, Fla., and a vocal performance major sings soprano in the chorus. Matthews has been a part of the chorus for two years. “A Cappella singing is beautiful,” Matthews says. “When I came to hear the choir sing I immediately fell in love.” Matthews enjoys being a part of many major events on campus, such as the “Lighting of the Green”. The A Cappella Singers also perform in many...

Mission Jamaica: Morant Bay

Saturday March 13 As the van pulled up to the Morant Bay Church of Christ in Morant Bay, Jamaica, I was excited to see the faces of the brothers and sisters I have had the opportunity of knowing for the last several years. This is my fifth visit to Morant Bay Church of Christ, and because of the love, kindness, and hospitality the church has shown me in the past, I truly consider the brothers and sisters of the church to be my close friends and a part of my family. I am thankful that the members of the mission team who are visiting the church for the first time have the opportunity to meet and to commune with the people who have greatly impacted my life and outlook on the world. As the team entered the church building, the preacher, his wife, and other members of the church greeted everyone, even those they did not know, with smiles and hugs. They welcomed us into their family, showing us that love has no boundaries. We spent a majority of the day in fellowship with the members of the church. Although a main purpose for the trip is to serve, our service is meaningless if we do not build relationships with the people. Because of the relaxed atmosphere of the Jamaican culture, a lot of time is spent just sitting and talking. Some of the greatest relationships that I have formed in Jamaica have been made through taking the time to sit down and to talk with someone, to learn who they are and to realize that although we are...
