Letter from the Editor, Kate Keith

Dear Reader, Let me be the first to welcome you to the Lumination Network, a student news network of the department of communication and journalism at Lipscomb University. This website is something that we hope will be a credible, balanced and timely source for news regarding both Lipscomb University and the Nashville community. This network, made up of online, television, radio and print content, has been created, produced and will continue to be run by students at this university. Lumination Network is the response to a challenge given to the department of communication and journalism by Lipscomb’s administration. That challenge was to better our department using the resources we have been given in a way that students who graduate from Lipscomb will be as equipped or more equipped to excel in their chosen career field than students at any other university. And it’s not just communication students who have participated….We’d like to thank the students in AR 4943, Graphic Design Firm, taught by Jonathan Gillette, for designing the “Lumination” logo. Lumination Network will never be perfect, and it will always strive to improve using suggestions given by members of the Lumination community. If you have a story idea, a suggestion on how to improve a facet of our network, or wish to contribute your multimedia talents, send a letter to the editor or submit a story idea. We need feedback to continue to improve this website and the network as a whole. Please take some time to explore the site– we have a lot of content! Visit the Senior Profiles and find out what Lipscomb’s almost-graduates are planning to...

Taco Mamacita offers quality on a college budget

If you’re in the mood for fresh, quality Mexican food, it’s now just past Belmont Mansion in Edgehill Village. Taco Mamacita is an up-and-coming taco restaurant with two locations, one in Chattanooga, Tenn. and the other in Nashville, Tenn. More specifically, Nashville’s Taco Mamacita is located in Edgehill Village, an area of town only about 10 minutes away from Lipscomb’s campus. The vibe of the restaurant is fun-loving and lively. Patrons have the option of indoor, bar, or patio seating in their street corner location. The noise level inside the restaurant wasn’t loud enough to keep me from conversing with my friends, and it wasn’t quiet enough to make me feel like the tables around me were eavesdropping. The service was friendly and quick, though it was getting busier when we were leaving around 6 p.m.  Our waitress was happy to make recommendations and tell us her favorite dishes. The menu offers a wide variety of specialty tacos, enchiladas, roasted Peruvian chicken, starters, and sides that differ from the stereotypical Mexican food joint. Some of the available sides were cilantro-spinach rice, charros beans, chipotle turnip greens, and sweet potato fries. We started out with the mango jalapeño salsa and chips. The chips and salsa are not free, but one shouldn’t expect them to be considering how good they were. Heeding our waitress’s advice, I ordered the Taco Royale the Oy Vey with the Mexican street corn, while my friend got the chicken enchilada and sweet potato fries. We could guess by looking at it that our food was made with fresh quality ingredients, and the taste confirmed this observation....

VIDEO: Communication department launches Lumination Network

EZELL CENTER (LTV) – In a world of tweets, Facebook relationships and Myspace music, Lipscomb University is taking a cyber step forward with today’s launch of Lumination Network. But where did the name Lumination Network come from? Lipscomb’s newly revamped department of communication and journalism sponsored a contest and encouraged students to submit their ideas for the name of the news service. Jeff Daniel, a sophomore pre-pharmacy student from Chattanooga, Tenn., came up with the winning idea. “I discovered the contest late one night while checking my school email and decided to try to create a name,” said Daniel. “The idea of lumination came from a few different places. I was thinking about how we are called to be the light of the world, and also the church hymn ‘Shine Jesus Shine’ was stuck in my head that night.” Daniel said he loves seeing God move about the campus. At one point during this school year, it looked like Daniel was going to have to transfer after the spring semester, but Daniel said that God has really opened up doors to allow him to stay and be a part of the Lipscomb community. As the winner of the “Name Your News” contest, Daniel will receive a $25 iTunes gift card. The Lumination Network allows students to be up-to-date with what is going on at Lipscomb and the Nashville area. Take a minute to view some of the Senior Profiles, Singarama coverage and Mission Trip journals. Lumination Network will feature converged coverage — text, audio and video — that is a hallmark of media today. And the network has already...
