How to eat healthy at low cost

Eating healthy does not always come at a high price. College students may have limited funds, but there are ways to eat healthier at a lower cost. Graduate assistant Lauren Kinser showed some Lipscomb students how to pick the right items to eat at a lower cost. In a cooking demonstration, Kinser used reasonably inexpensive ingredients to make healthy snacks, like a peanut butter and jelly smoothie and energy bites, which are made with oats. “There’s no reason you need to pay two dollars extra to go to Whole Foods and feel better about it,” Kinser said. “You can feel better about saving two bucks and putting that towards buying something else.” Even at more affordable stores like Kroger, students may still be faced with expensive options. In the case of honey, Mountain Ridge is $9.29, Aunt Sue’s is $10.49 and the Kroger brand is $8.55. While it may not seem like a huge price difference, every penny counts when you are a broke college student. “Right now, I don’t have a lot to spend on healthy food,” senior Angela Moore said. “So it’s often easy to give the excuse that ‘oh that’s gonna be spendy so I’m just gonna go the fast way.’ I don’t wanna do that if there’s a better way.” Kinser encourages students to look at the labels of ingredients. She explained that many of the ingredients may be the same. “The name can sometimes be misleading,” Kinser said. “And also, what’s even more funny is sometimes they’re actually made in the same processing plants, but they just have a different label on them.” Yet Whole...

‘Big Hero 6’ a big winner for Disney Animation

Big Hero 6, the newest title from Walt Disney Animation Studios, stands as yet another home run for the Mouse House.  The film’s blend of action and adventure with close-knit relationships and genuine emotion made for an epic story, one of the best Disney has told in quite some time. Big Hero 6 takes place in the fictional metropolis of San Fransokyo. It tells the story of 14-year-old robotics engineer Hiro Hamada and his older brother, Tadashi. The elder Hamada, a robotics genius, has developed a revolutionary robot healthcare assistant named Baymax. Tadashi dreams of helping the world with his creation, but Hiro sees Baymax doing even more. After a tragic accident, Hiro feels compelled to turn Baymax into a tough fighting machine. The two join forces with a few of Tadashi’s friends (Honey Lemon, Wasabi, GoGo and Fred) to find out the root of a mysterious plot that may correlate with the accident. Big Hero 6 has a lot going for it. The film’s animation is absolutely stunning. Sure, this is Disney, the animation king, but this movie felt very lifelike. The animators included several cues from live-action film. In all the fight scenes, production used a lot of “handheld shaky cam” visuals with “poor” zooming and focusing, but the movement never became distracting. Thinking all the way back to Toy Story, CGI animation has come a very, very long way. But, animation is only a tool used to make the movie. The core of every movie is the story, and this story here is very strong. In fact, this is the best story that Disney has put out...

Lumination’s Sam Webb shares Haunted High Rise experience

I am not a huge fan of scary things. However, I found myself crashing through the darkened hallways of Haunted High Rise with my friends. Residents of High Rise began preparing for the event around the beginning of October, and the decorating started around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Each floor had a different theme, ranging from hotels to butcher shops. Freshman and High Rise resident Ethan Osborne spent the night startling  people on the fifth floor. To Osborne, being as groggy as a zombie was well-worth it. “We don’t get much rest but [Haunted High Rise] is all in good fun,” said Osborne. One floor that received a great deal of attention was the contagion floor, which appeared to play off of the publicity from the Ebola virus. As for me, one go-around through the horrifying halls of Haunted High Rise was enough to remind me that I am not as brave as I...

Lumination’s NFL Midseason Awards

Hello, fellow NFL fans! Cory Woodroof here. The NFL season is half-way over, and we’ve got some awards to give out. The players and teams below are the ones I designate the “Midseason fill-in-the-blank” winner so far this year. These players or teams may not hang on for the rest of the year, but I’d bet in their favor. MVP: DEMARCO MURRAY – RB, COWBOYS To me, the best player in the NFL comes down to three players: DeMarco Murray, Peyton Manning and J.J. Watt. Manning is playing at an incredibly high level on the best team in the NFL, and Watt is wrecking opposing offenses on a regular basis. But, can we really say anyone is having a more impactful year than Murray? The running back has rushed for over 100 yards in eight consecutive games and has seven touchdowns on the season. Murray is also reportedly on pace to top former Rams great Eric Dickerson’s all-time season rushing yard record of 2, 105. The Cowboys are the surprise team of the NFL this year, and Murray’s big year is one of the huge sparks that has gotten them there. If Murray keeps up this pace and breaks Dickerson’s record, he’s the MVP. No questions asked. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: PEYTON MANNING – QB, BRONCOS After winning MVP last year, the Sherriff has not slowed down. Manning has thrown for 22 touchdowns and has a 90.1 QBR so far this season. After getting settled in the season, he’s got the Broncos offense playing at such a high level right now that the team looks to be unbeatable. Having...

Lumination’s Gemikal Prude details Paint the Herd experience

Good music, the people I love and a reason to cause a mess and not have to worry about it. Lipscomb’s annual Paint the Herd was in full swing, and not just with the usual paint, but also glitter and zombies. This event allows students to come together and have a good time. Before even seeing the parking garage, where Paint the Herd was located, I could clearly hear blasting music. Before actually entering the “rave” area — covered in tarps from top to bottom — everyone was given a white paint suit. And upon entering, I was greeted by strobe lights, music that you couldn’t help but dance to and the most important component of the night: paint. “I look forward to Paint the Herd every year,” said senior Kenny Smith. “It’s definitely a tradition for myself and my friends.” You could tell that many others had that same mindset, and why wouldn’t they? This event occurs on the hill end of the semester, and allows students to have a break from strenuous studying for an evening. “It’s an amazing event,” said senior Joe Sanderson. “So fun. Glad I made the decision to finally go and get the opportunity to be carefree.” Paint the Herd was a hit, and will be something that will stick around for the long haul. Freshman Ravyn Rowlett said that it is something she will be looking forward to next year, and is sure that many others feel the same as well. Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR. Lumination’s 2014 Dove Awards preview: New Artist of the Year

For the second year in a row, Lipscomb is hosting the 45th Annual Dove Awards. On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the title for New Artist of the Year will be given to one of five artists. The nominees are as follows: 1 Girl Nation Andy Mineo Ellie Holcomb Hillsong Young & Free Love & The Outcome Andy Mineo seems to be a popular artist as he offers a different sound for those who listen to Christian music. Mineo’s popularity is distinct, as he has two songs nominated for Rap/Hip Hop Song of the Year — “Stop The Traffic” and “You Can’t Stop Me.” Mineo’s album Never Land is also nominated for Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year. Hillsong Young and Free, not to be confused with Hillsong United, has become popular for the younger crowd. Their song “Alive” has been nominated for Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year. In addition, their album We Are Young & Free has been nominated for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year and Praise and Worship Album of the Year. Contrary to the upbeat sounds of Andy Mineo and Hillsong Young and Free, Ellie Holcomb offers a more folk, singer-songwriter sound. Holcomb’s album As Sure As The Sun was nominated for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year. Although she is not nominated for as many categories as the other artists listed, I think she could easily take away New Artist of the Year. Holcomb’s sound resonates more with me, and I would guess it does for many other college students as well. As I listen to her music, I imagine myself sitting in a coffee shop studying or fellowshipping with friends. Her...
