The Lipscomb women’s soccer (9-4-1, 3-1) lost to the Stetson Hatters (6-4-2, 3-0) with a score of 2-0 on Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The team returned home after a three conference game winning streak at Kennesaw State, Jacksonville, and North Florida. The game started slow with an early goal from Stetson in the first five minutes. However, the game quickly switched to a defensive fight between the Bisons and the Hatters. “For most of the game I thought we played well,” head coach Shannon O’Brien said. “We dictated the tempo.” Lipscomb defense continued to fight throughout the first half with three goal saves by goalkeeper Anna Buhigas, but switched to strong offense in the second half. “We created a lot of good chances, we just couldn’t score,” O’Brien said. “Which in the end is the hardest part of the game.” The game was full of near misses for the Bisons, with ten shots in the first half and twelve shots in the second half, outshooting Stetson by double. “The last ten minutes we gambled we pulled a center back and threw her forward, and they got that second goal,” O’Brien said. “It’s a risk/reward thing; if it works out and you get a goal with an extra forward, great but if it doesn’t, well that’s what happened.” As the game neared its’ end, the Bisons started to lose the control over the ball which lead to a chaotic finish to the tough game. With seven minutes left in the second half Stetson drove the ball from center field into the net scoring the second goal of...

The Lipscomb Lady Bisons (10-5, 3-1) volleyball team defeated the Stetson Hatters (4-15, 1-3) in four sets on Friday night in Allen Arena. Lipscomb came out swinging, serving and scoring early and dominated the first set, blitzing the Hatters to take the first set 25-14. The first set saw the Lady Bisons accumulate more kills (15) than the Hatters had points (14). In the second set, Lipscomb came out and set the tone early, taking an early 10-1 lead. Lipscomb received some of that help from the bench. “Some of our bench got some valuable experience today,” head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. The second set ended with Lipscomb pulling away from the Hatters 25-13 for another double-digit set win. “I thought we came out and did a really nice job executing in the first two sets,” Rosenthal said. Sophomore Lauren Anderson, who is third on the team in kills, (131) lead the Lady Bisons with six kills in the first two sets. Two Lady Bisons, senior Katie Bradley and junior Brittany Thomas, finished the second set with 1.000 hit percentages. However, the Bisons began the third set flat, and the Hatters would take their first lead of the match in the third set 10-9 and increase it to a 13-10 lead. “We didn’t necessarily come out with as much urgency,” Rosenthal said. “It was one of those situations where she (Thomas) wasn’t necessarily playing her best and being asked to lead.” Stetson would not allow Lipscomb’s early dominance to keep them down, increasing their lead to 17-12. “Any leadership role — when you’re not at your best you kind of...

The Lipscomb men’s soccer team (5-5-1) lost 2-0 to the Memphis Tigers (6-4-1) Wednesday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex after a series of three away games last week. “We are still confident, we played well as a team; there are just little things we have to work on and we are going to stay positive moving forward,” senior midfielder Daniel Vieira said. Throughout the first half, the Bisons sent many long passes up the left side of the field and played several quick, two-touch passes down the ride side; however, despite outshooting Memphis 4-3 in the half, Lipscomb couldn’t find the back of the net. In the 39th minute, a ricocheted ball fell to the feet of a Tiger forward in the box and he scored to the left side of the goal givingMemphis a 1-0 lead going into halftime. “We had a good first half despite the silly goal at the end,” Vieira said. “We wanted to keep moving the ball side to side and we wanted to watch out for the same stuff that hurt us on that goal.” The Tigers, a team that entered the match with the 25th best shutout percentage in the nation at 0.50, stayed true to their defense throughout the game as they utilized speed to continually clear the ball away from Lipscomb attacks. As strong back lines for both teams dominated the second half, the Bisons began to turn up the offensive pressure as time winded down. In the 87th minute, a cross went all the way through the box, narrowly missed by several attackers. Again in 88th minute, junior forward Kyle Smith had the...

For the safety of those involved, the sergeant has asked for the Athletics Department to not release his name. Each season Lipscomb head baseball coach Jeff Forehand invites his friend and neighbor, a seasoned veteran, to speak to the team about why the National Anthem tradition is an important part of the game. This year, the sergeant came on Sept. 7 and spent the afternoon speaking to both the men’s basketball and baseball teams. “I just wanted our guys to understand more about the National Anthem and what it means to stand for the flag and for this song that we play at the beginning of every game,” Forehand said. “It should mean something more to the team when these veterans come out here to show us what it means to defend our country.” The sergeant expressed to the athletes that the flag stands for freedom, courage, honor, service, integrity and excellence. He said that the United States of America is the best for a reason and the flag is a symbol for that idea. The speaker also told the teams that today’s society tends to forget the sacrifice that men and women in uniform make for the safety of friends and family back home. Senior shortstop Hunter Hanks has listened to the sergeant’s remarks for fours years in a row and said he has gained a greater appreciation for the National Anthem. “Every since my freshman year, he has come and brought a friend to talk about what the National Anthem means to them and everything that they’ve been through overseas,” Hanks said. “Every year that he speaks to us he comes with new examples of how freedom isn’t free and every...

Although the energy was high in Allen Arena Friday night, the volleyball team ran out of gas while battling rival Kennesaw State. The atmosphere was alive with all of Greek life there, a live DJ from the Rio Olympics and a well-known color commentator, also from the Rio Olympics. The Lady Bisons came out hot in the first match, gaining a quick 7-0 lead. They carried their momentum all the way to the end, where they defeated Kennesaw State 25-14. “We have a budding rivalry with Kennesaw. We knocked them out of championship game last year, and they are continuing to push the envelope as far as our conference goes.” said Coach Brandon Rosenthal. The second match, however, was a different story. Both teams were neck-and-neck as the lead kept changing, constantly. The Owls had the lead until senior transfer Taylor Racich took control of the net and slammed two balls down the middle of the court. Unfortunately for Lipscomb, our defense had trouble keeping the lead due to their delayed reactions to the quick Kennesaw State offense. Junior Lauren Anderson kept fighting and putting the Bisons back in the lead. A major key from this match that hurt the Lady Bisons was the struggle to control their blocking on the net and to keep the ball in bounds. Lipscomb also gave away some easy points by serving the ball out of bounds. Racich and freshman Carlyle Nusbaum came to play, slamming two balls off the block to put Lipscomb ahead 17-16. Some miscommunication hurt the Lady Bisons and caused a few balls to drop right in the middle of the...

Lipscomb men’s soccer (5-2, 1-0) defeated the Stetson Hatters (2-4-2, 0-1) with a score of 2-0 Wednesday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. This win extended the team’s win streak to 4-1 after wins against Belmont and SIUE last week. After the first half, neither team successfully put the ball in the back of the net. The Bisons missed several close call opportunities; one of which included a race in the 35th minute where redshirt sophomore forward Logan Paynter sprinted down the field with only one defender to beat; yet, he was tackled in the box, and no foul was called. “We needed to bring a more aggressive approach to defending and bring more energy,” coach Peter Lowry said. “The emphasis [at halftime] was having more urgency on the ball, and we won because we outworked them.” As Lipscomb emerged from halftime at a 0-0 tie, junior midfielder Eduardo Reza caught a ball on his left foot just outside the box, and in he 50th minute immediately shifted the ball to his right foot before sending the ball to the left post and giving the Bisons a 1-0 lead. “We knew we needed more intensity; we were looking for a goal and it fired us up,” Reza said. In the 77th minute, redshirt senior forward and midfielder Josue Chavez played the ball back and forth with junior forward Brandon Braumuller, eventually resulting in a powerful shot to the back of the net for Chavez, his first goal of the season. “The team has been emphasizing pushing through lately,” junior Brandon Braumuller said. “We refuse to be satisfied until the full time has been called.” Possession offense and defense closed out...
