It was a tale of the Lipscomb bench in Nashville. Lexi Manos scored a career-high 20 points en route to a total of 57 points put up by the Lipscomb Lady Bisons’ bench. The Lady Bisons had control for most of the game as they won 97-78. The USC Upstate Spartans struggled to convert on shots, going 27-of-77 on field goals (35.1 percent). This led to 50 rebounds for the Lady Bisons as opposed to 40 for the Spartans. Upstate could not contain Lipscomb’s offense, which generated a season-high point total. After beginning with a promising 7-0 lead, including a 3-pointer to start things out, the Spartans allowed multiple scoring runs by Lipscomb to quickly erase that momentum. After the first half, Upstate had only converted 23.7 percent on field goals, including 2-of-15 from the 3-point line. The score at that point was 45-26 Lipscomb. The Spartans engendered a 5-point run to start the second half. But it wasn’t enough, as the Lady Bisons quickly slotted themselves back into the competition. Both teams each scored 52 points apiece in the second half. The main story for the Spartans was their consistently missed shots. They were off-target from the start and couldn’t really pick up in that category until the Lipscomb bench saw a lot more playing time towards the end of the game. The main story of the night for Lipscomb was Lexi Manos, who put up the most points of her career. Coming off the bench, Manos converted on her first five field goal attempts to result in 9-of-14 on the night for her team-high 20 points. “It...

As the 2018 Lipscomb baseball season approaches, two Bisons have been named to the ASUN Baseball Preseason All-Conference Team. Upperclassmen Zeke Dodson and Jake Perry were named to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference team. Third basemen Dodson was voted to the All-ASUN Second Team last year. He led the team in batting average last season, batting .309. Perry smashed 7 home runs last year as a designated hitter. “We are always excited when our players are recognized,” coach Jeff Forehand said about the preseason award. “We are excited about what we’re going to do as a team and they will be a big part of that.” Lipscomb starts its season at home against UNC Ashville on Feb. 16. “We all are looking forward to Feb. 16,” Forehand said. ASUN coaches picked the Bisons to finish sixth in the conference. Forehand said his goals this year are the same. “First pitch strikes, first batter outs, and make the routine plays on defense, on offense [we are focused] on on-base percentage, moving runners over and situational hitting.” “If we can concentrate on what we can control the opponent doesn’t matter.” Photo courtesy of Lipscomb...

All but one Lipscomb player scored as the Bisons cruised to a 92-78 victory over the USC Upstate Spartans Wednesday in Allen Arena. Centers Rob Marberry and George Brammeier dominated in the post. Marberry led all scorers with 24 points and missed just twice from the field. Brammeier added 14 off the bench. Lipscomb out-rebounded USC Upstate by 11 and scored 56 points in the paint to the Spartans’ 24. Coach Casey Alexander said the inside presence “helps the whole team.” “It takes a lot of the burden off,” Alexander said. “That was the biggest key.” Garrison Mathews rolled his left ankle and limped off early in the first half. The ASUN’s leading scorer returned a couple minutes later and finished with 10 points along with a team-leading 11 rebounds and three charges drawn. Kenny Cooper finished with 16 points. Zach Flener, who played the final 23 seconds of the game, was the only Bison not to score. Mike Cunningham led the Spartans with 20 points and five assists. Ramel Thompkins and Deion Holmes were the only other Spartans in double figures. Two Spartans fouled out. After a sloppy start for both teams, Lipscomb closed the first half on a 10-0 run and took a 42-29 lead into the locker room. The Bisons turned the ball over three times in four possessions to start the second period, allowing USC Upstate to bring the lead back into single digits. Coach Casey Alexander substituted all five players in favor of the bench unit of Brammeier, Asa Duvall, John Matt Merritt, Aaron Korn and Andrew Fleming. Brammeier’s dunk just before the under-16...

The Lady Bisons could not quite take down the Goliath of Atlantic Sun women’s basketball on Monday night, falling to Florida Gulf Coast (19-3, 5-0 ASUN) by a score of 68-54. Lipscomb hung tough throughout the entire game until the last few minutes. “You can’t judge anything that you do by the final score,” Lipscomb coach Greg Brown said. “I think we can look at our intensity.” The Lady Bisons (6-14, 2-3 ASUN) went on a 10-0 run late in the third quarter to pull even at 48. FGCU’s largest lead throughout the game was eight until the final five minutes, when the Eagles closed on a 20-6 run. Brown was pleased with his team after the game. The Eagles are ranked #1 among mid-major schools by College Insider and have also received votes in the AP Top 25 Poll. “Your margin of error is very small,” Coach Brown said. “I’m very proud of what we were able to do, and I think it’s big for them to understand that they are capable of doing a lot of things.” The Lady Bisons relied heavily on the scoring of senior Loren Cagle and freshman Taylor Clark. Cagle led all scorers with 20 points, and Clark added 14. Redshirt freshman Emily Kmec scored just three points in the game on one-of-nine shooting, despite averaging 10 points per game this season. Coach Brown was not worried about her performance. “She’s a good shooter,” Coach Brown said. “That’ll happen. She still had seven rebounds, deflections, one assist, no turnovers and a blocked shot, so there’s always more ways to contribute. Her length helps...

The Lipscomb women’s basketball team went into Saturday’s game against Stetson hoping to pick up its third conference win in four tries. However, poor shooting and rebounding ultimately doomed Lipscomb’s hope of continuing their recent hot streak. The Lady Bisons (6-13, 2-2 ASUN) shot just 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the field and gave up 22 offensive rebounds, allowing Stetson to take a 59-55 victory in Allen Arena. “I thought we did a heck of a job defensively to hold them to 59 points,” Lipscomb coach Greg Brown said. “The problem was they scored off the offensive rebounds. You can’t allow that to happen and expect to win.” Stetson (12-8, 3-1 ASUN) held a slim 25-24 lead at halftime, and the game was knotted at 39 at the end of the third quarter. However, the Lady Bisons faltered down the stretch and were outscored 20-16 in the final quarter. Lipscomb freshman guard Taylor Clark set a new career-high with 21 points, while also grabbing four rebounds and making several hustle plays to fight for loose balls. “That’s her – she plays with great energy and effort, and she’ll only continue to get better,” Brown said. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the shooting woes of Lipscomb senior Loren Cagle. Fresh off a career performance of 31 points at North Florida on Monday, Cagle went just 1-of-15 from the field on Saturday, finishing with four points. “Loren’s a heck of a player,” Brown said. “I’m not worried about her shooting, because she did a lot of other things well.” Lipscomb largely neutralized Stetson’s high-powered offense as Brittney Chambers (19 points), McKenna Beach...

The Lipscomb men’s basketball team got back on track Saturday with a tense 85-82 home win over Stetson after three straight conference losses. The Hatters hung around all game, but only led for less than a minute in the second half. “We never played with any real confidence, and that’s my job to figure out how to push the right buttons to make that happen,” coach Casey Alexander said. “Good to get the win, way better than the alternative.” The Bisons were flustered by Florida Gulf Coast’s zone defense on Thursday, which helped spark the erasure of Lipscomb’s 18-point lead that night. Stetson came out in an aggressive zone. Alexander said he didn’t make drastic changes to his team’s zone offense strategy, because “it’s usually gonna come down to whether you make shots or not.” “If we did anything better tonight, we got the ball inside a lot more against them,” Alexander said. Game of runs Neither team led by more than five points in the first period. Hatters guard Divine Myles’s fast break layup at the halftime bell tied the game at 39. The teams traded runs throughout the second half. Eli Pepper dove for a loose ball early in the half and flipped it to Rob Marberry, who jammed it to cap the Bisons’ 11-2 run. Stetson made a run of its own to take a 55-54 lead just before the under-12 media timeout. Then Mathews found Rose for three to regain the lead. Myles’s three for the Hatters with 5:20 to go gave Stetson their next lead at 70-69 lead. Two possessions later, Myles rolled his...
