The Lipscomb men’s basketball team just hit a speed bump in what has otherwise been a near-perfect season. After the Bisons handed Liberty a 79-59 defeat in Lynchburg, Virginia on Jan. 29, the Flames returned the favor by escaping with a 74-66 victory Wednesday in front of 3,437 Allen Arena fans. “The only thing to do is tip your hat to [Liberty],” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “Our teams are comparable… we’re both efficient at what we do. They were just better.” The loss was Lipscomb’s first in ASUN play and snapped an 11-game win streak. The Bisons (20-5, 11-1 ASUN) had not lost since Dec. 30 at Clemson (84-67). Lipscomb senior Rob Marberry led all scorers with 22 points, while Garrison Mathews had 19. Five Flames finished in double figures, including Lovell Cabbil (16) and Scottie James (15). Lipscomb fell behind early and never regained the lead. Eight different Flames scored in the first half, and Liberty held a 38-27 advantage at halftime. Liberty’s low-tempo style threw the Bisons for a loop. Lipscomb committed 12 turnovers and shot 37 percent from the field. In the second half, the Bisons made just one of their 11 three-point attempts. “The tempo was a struggle for us,” Alexander said. “It was a low-possession game. We didn’t have much movement offensively early…we got the ball inside and had empty possessions.” Liberty (22-5, 11-1 ASUN) led by as many as 16 points with 18:21 remaining. Lipscomb has defended its home court well this season. The Bisons held again with an 86-77 victory over Jacksonville University Saturday at Allen Arena. The game started out with the fast pace and intensity that is customary to a Bisons team that leads the ASUN in points per game, and the team jumped out to an early four-point lead. It looked like Lipscomb (20-4, 11-0 ASUN) might cruise to another victory. The Dolphins (11-15, 4-7 ASUN) had other plans. Jacksonville would quickly tie the game up again. The Bisons tried to consistently change the lineup but could not find one that allowed them to open the half up. “We couldn’t get any real rhythm and make a run to extend the lead,” Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander said. “They were playing well; I felt like we just had to keep trying different combinations to see what would work the best.” From then on, the half was a back-and-forth affair, one that consisted of a total of 15 lead changes and five ties that lasted for over four-and-a-half minutes of game time. Near the end of a frustrating half for the Bisons, senior guard Garrison Mathews committed a technical foul directly after senior forward Eli Pepper had committed a personal. The Lipscomb women’s basketball team took down Jacksonville University 61-58 on Saturday afternoon, breaking a 19-game losing streak dating back to mid-November. The Lady Bisons led by 17 at halftime and by 13 with 7:37 left in the fourth quarter, but Jacksonville nearly came back. The game ended on a missed three-point jumper by senior guard Jasmyn Brown with two seconds left, and Lipscomb forward Kailey Rosenbaum scooped the rebound. It’s the first win for the Lady Bisons (3-20, 1-9 ASUN) since Nov. 15, a game in which they edged Alabama A&M 62-58 to begin the year 2-1. Jacksonville dropped to 12-12 (5-6 ASUN). Junior guard Carleigh Short scored a team-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, while Rosenbaum added 16. Redshirt sophomore forward Emily Kmec led the team with eight rebounds, and freshman forward Taylor Hammack threw in four assists. For the Dolphins, Brown led with 16 points, while senior forward Trudy Walker grabbed 15 boards. Senior guard Rolanda Hayes tabbed three assists. Injuries continued to plague the Lipscomb women’s basketball team in an 81-60 loss to the second-best team in the ASUN as part of a doubleheader against North Alabama. Sophomore guard Taylor Clark, who currently leads the team in scoring, was ruled out Friday with an undisclosed injury. On the flipside, junior guard Lauren Rau returned to the starting lineup after sitting out on Tuesday. Lipscomb coach Greg Brown said her “intensity” made an immediate impact in a strong first half for the Lady Bisons. The Lions’ (16-2, 7-1 ASUN) sophomore forward Brittany Panetti came into Saturday’s matchup boasting the highest points-per-game mark in the conference, but two early fouls put her on the bench and gave the Lady Bisons (2-19, 0-8 ASUN) early success. Despite UNA junior guard Emma Wallen’s 17 first-quarter points, including five three-pointers, Lipscomb was down by only six at the end of the first quarter. Entering the second quarter, the Lady Bisons went on a 10-1 run led by freshman guard Keely Morrow, who would finish as the Lady Bisons’ leading scorer with 11 points. Part of the second quarter success was fueled by Lipscomb’s points off turnovers, generating its first lead going into halftime since December. But coming back from halftime, the Lions finally got into rhythm, led by Panetti’s return to the game. The second quarter script was flipped, and it was the Lions who went on a scoring run. Wallen also made an impact after scoring zero points in the second quarter with her three-point shooting. She finished the day with a career-high 30 points and was 8-of-13 from behind the arc....
