Southeast hit with winter storm, Bison basketball rescheduled for this afternoon

While every elementary, middle and high school in the Nashville area has closed for today (and probably will tomorrow as well), Lipscomb University does not surrender to the white blanket covering the entire southeaster United States. Classes are still scheduled for the entire university, but keep an eye on your email for professors who might cancel individual classes. Because of this wintry weather we’re getting, the basketball game between the Bisons and the Ospreys of the University of North Florida have been moved up to noon today for the men’s game and 2:15 pm for the women’s game. There will be a free BBQ lunch for students and admission to the game is free to everyone. So, whether your classes are cancelled or you’re trekking through the snow to reach that academic building, stop by Allen Arena this afternoon for some Bison basketball, free food and a promised good time. Basketball gives Burgason a mission in Africa

The game of basketball may be just another sport to most people, but for junior Jordan Burgason it’s a passion driving his future. Burgason, a member of the Lipscomb University basketball team, has been playing basketball since he was 6. It wasn’t until he was 18 that he realized the game of basketball was more than just a sport, but his calling in life. In March of 2008 Burgason set out to Uganda, Africa to coach a basketball team. “It was my senior year (in high school), and I remember my parents sitting me down and telling me they were going to send me somewhere I could soak up a different culture,” Burgason said. Being that he was in the middle of his final high school year Burgason was not thrilled about leaving. “I didn’t want to miss my senior year, and all the memories that came with that,” Burgason said. “After a few days I thought about it and realized that this experience in Africa would be better than any experience I would have during my senior year.” Once he arrived in Uganda he soon realized that things were totally different than they were back in Ames, Iowa. “My first memory of being over there was being on a bus with about 90 people on it– the bus was only made to fit 30,” Burgason said. “That was a very new experience. It was then that I prayed to God and told him that I knew he would be with me throughout this whole experience to watch over me.” While in Uganda, Burgason coached a basketball team and also worked in an orphanage for...

Bisons win thriller in OT versus Austin Peay

No one knew for sure when the game would end. However, when it finally did, the Bisons were victorious. In the 67th meeting between the two teams, the Bisons were able to squeeze out a 104-101 victory against Austin Peay State University. It did not come easily, though. The game was tied 11 different times, and the largest lead by any team was nine points. That lead was part of an early first-half run by the Bisons. The largest APSU lead was seven. The Governors held a steady lead for most of the second half with a few ties here and there, but the Bisons could never get on top and steal the momentum away from them. That all changed when APSU missed two consecutive free throws with under seven seconds left, followed by senior Josh Slater taking the ball from one end of the court to the other for a game-tying layup. The score at the end of regulation was 87-87. Those 87 points were the most allowed by Lipscomb this season, and Coach Scott Sanderson let his players know that. “Obviously we needed to get a stop,” senior center Adnan Hodzic said. “They are a great team with great forwards that can penetrate, and we just had to get one stop and the game was ours.” The Bisons got that stop. Basketball defeats Stillman College in home opener

The Bisons got scoring from everywhere on Tuesday night.Lipscomb had five players reach double digits when Stillman visited Allen Arena. In double figures were Brandon Brown with 10, Justin Glenn with 11, Josh Slater with 18, Adnan Hodzic with 19, and freshman Robert Boyd lead the Bisons in scoring with 20. The final score was 103-78 With Hodzic’s 19 points, the Lipscomb big man continued his streak to 59 consecutive games with 10 points or more. Boyd continues to impress Lipsomb fans with his play. The Knoxville native tallied 13 points against North Carolina in his first career game. Tonight, in addition to his 20 points, Boyd went 10-10 from the free throw line, had four assists and five steals. Senior guard Josh Slater lead the Bisons in rebounding with 10. Slater was the first Bison to record a double-double this season. Stillman was lead by Riley Lee, who had 21 points. The Bisons outrebounded Stillman 57-33.
