Featured image by Anna Rogers I know I’ve already done a column about winter in the South, but since there is a possibility for some snow this week, I thought it might be good to circle back to this topic. While my fellow Clevelanders and Midwesterners are preparing for negative double digit temperatures this week (shoutout to you winter warriors, and prayers that you stay safe and warm!), Nashville’s supposed to experience some snow and cooler-than-normal temperatures that might be causing some wardrobe worry. Therefore, I figured I would give some advice from a lifelong-Northern girl on how to conquer the snow and cold in style. Long sleeves are probably the best idea for when the temps plummet and the snow starts to fall. Even with my heavy red peacoat that I love, I still get cold outside. Wearing a long sleeved top or a sweater helps with that, allowing me to stay warmer as I walk to class or spend time outside. If you do not like long sleeves or are worried you might get too hot, try some layers. I love cardigans and kimonos to wear over short sleeved tops, and they’re great for if you get hot because you have the ability to take the long sleeves off. Not only do layers keep you warm and give versatility to an outfit, but they also allow a few pieces to create multiple looks! I got a new floral cardigan over break that I just absolutely love. Hello friends! Happy New Year! To start off 2019, I thought it would be fun to look back at six past decades and the fashion trends of each of them. In addition to seeing the styles shift every decade, there are ways to incorporate aspects of each of these decades into your wardrobe today. I was thrilled about this idea and then became even more excited when I was shopping in downtown Murfreesboro (which is so cute). My friends and I wandered into a store on the square called Sugaree’s, which was filled with vintage-style clothing. I seriously wanted to buy the entire store. So rather than using Pinterest as my inspiration for the styles of each decade, I thought we should look to our fellow Bisons. I spent hours on a quiet, cloudy Sunday sitting in the back of Beaman Library looking through yearbooks from 1939 to 1989 to find fashion inspiration from the classes that came before us. The Best of 1939 A sweet photo of a couple filled an entire page in the 1939 edition of Lipscomb’s yearbook, The Backlog. Although it is just the backs of the couple, it gives a great depiction of the styles of the time. The girl is dressed in a plaid blazer jacket with a white knee-length skirt. At the age of six, I was a Star Wars kid. During the dog days of my early youth, the epic story of Luke Skywalker’s quest to defeat the Empire captivated me more than any other silly children’s entertainment. I proudly owned the original films on VHS. I collected a large group of action figures from the Star Wars universe – even those random aliens that only appeared in a frame or two during the cantina scene of A New Hope. I even saw The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi during their theatrical re-releases. So, obviously, May 19th, 1999 meant more to me than my birthday, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, or any other organized holiday that warrants a sort of reward or present. On this fateful day, writer/director George Lucas unveiled the first new Star Wars film in sixteen years. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace changed my six year old world like nothing ever had. The spectacle, the action, the peril – everything collided to create a gigantic supernova of wonder and amazement. All those years of persistent enjoyment had paid off immensely. A few years passed, two more prequels made their way to the screen, and I couldn’t have been happier. Shift to this past week. George Lucas announced his retirement from the big budget film industry on the heels of his newest production, Red Tails.
