The Lipscomb baseball team beat the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 12-10 Tuesday night in a nail-biting game at Dugan Field. Middle Tennessee (15-22, 9-6 C-USA) started the game with two runs in the top of the first, but the Bisons (19-17, 3-6 ASUN) quickly took the lead in the bottom of the second. David Graves tripled to right center, sending Josh Martinez to score. Brian Moore hit a home run afterward, sending Graves home and giving Lipscomb the edge to start third inning, 3-2. Lipscomb’s lead didn’t last long, as Middle Tennessee scored five runs in the top of the third. However, the Bisons lessened the gap to 7-5 as Graves hit a double in the bottom of the third inning, sending Cade Sorrells home, later followed by Chris Bashlor. The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless for the Bisons with Middle Tennessee scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Bisons recovered and scored four runs at the bottom of the sixth, tying up the game 9-9. In the bottom of the seventh the Bisons took the lead 11-9 after three scoreless innings for Middle Tennessee. While the Blue Raiders tried to make a comeback at the top of the eighth with one run, they struck out, leaving Lipscomb the chance to score once more before the ninth inning. Lipscomb baseball played the Kentucky Wildcats Wednesday night at Dugan Field in a game that came down to a tough fielding play and a rough eighth inning for the Bisons. A popup just beyond the infield in the fifth inning got lost in the lights and ended up bringing in two runs for the Wildcats. Then in the eighth inning, Kentucky was able to score four runs, all with two outs. Coming into the game The Bisons came into the game off a tough road trip that started with ASUN conference foe Florida Gulf Coast, who swept the Bisons in a three-game series, and ended in Knoxville where the Volunteers hit seven home runs to defeat Lipscomb 11- 2. Kentucky also came into the game on a rough stretch that had seen them lose seven of their past 10 games after starting their season with a 14-8 record. Senior Erik Gutierrez made his second start of the season for the Bisons on the mound, while Kentucky put forward freshman starting pitcher Dillon Marsh. Both starting pitchers have begun the season with rough stat lines. Gutierrez came in having pitched 10 innings on the season and earning a 4.50 era, while Marsh had pitched 24 innings and earned a 6.75 era. Expect a tough schedule ahead for the Lipscomb baseball team — but with a much healthier roster to start the season. The 2019 season is just around the corner for the Bisons as they prepare for their first matchup against Valparaiso University on Feb. 15 in an opening home weekend series at Dugan Field. Head coach Jeff Forehand’s unit is coming off of a losing season but brings back a roster full of experienced players. Unfortunately, the Bisons dealt with a plague of injuries last year. “For last year’s season, it started on the mound,” pitching coach James Ogden said. “And then guys like Lee Solomon and even Jeffrey Crisan had to miss a significant amount of time; and then, those were staples of our team that had been around a long time.” This problem has been mostly corrected for the 2019 season, as Ogden says the team realizes getting everyone healthy is something they definitely need to correct. They have done so in some of their training and in therapy and rehabilitation. Almost everyone is ready to play minus a few sprains and tendonitis. And they need to be healthy. This season will be one of the highest RPI schedules when ranked against those prior, with more Power 5 opponents and teams that ranked in the RPI’s top 100. Lipscomb has a much tougher schedule, but Forehand explains that this is all by design. “The ASUN league is a very good league coming off of last year’s season, the seventh-best league in the country,” Forehand said. “So, every team in the league is playing those RPI games. Major League Baseball stars Rex Brothers and Caleb Joseph joined the Lipscomb baseball team at the First Pitch Dinner Saturday evening in Allen Arena. After attending Lipscomb, Brothers was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2009. He was the 34th overall pick in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Joseph also attended Lipscomb, leading the Bisons with a .342 batting average during his junior year. Joseph spent six years in the minors before he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2014. The two major leaguers, along with members of the 2015 ballclub and coaches, signed autographs before the dinner began. With the 2015 baseball season just around the corner, head coach Jeff Forehand and the team are looking forward to defeating strong contenders such as Kennesaw State. The Lipscomb Bisons baseball team took the series over the Mercer Bears this weekend and now sits in first place in the Atlantic Sun conference. After a rain delay on Friday, Lipscomb came out on top 4-2. Mercer struck first with a solo home run by Sasha LaGarde but the Bisons punched back and were winning 2-1 after three innings. Head Coach Jeff Forehand told Lipscomb Athletics that Friday’s game was just a good game between two good teams. “Luckily for us we got some fortunate hits and scored when we had runners in scoring position,” Forehand said. “They made a mistake that gave us one run but it was just a good ball game all the way around.” Saturday’s game resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Bisons to give them the series win. Junior John Allison earned a lead-off walk in first inning and would later score on a sacrifice fly from senior Drew Adams. Junior Grant Massey would also score in the first inning capping off the scoring for the Bisons for the rest of the game. “It was a great first inning,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “Drew and [Austin] Sistrunk had a couple of clutch, situational at-bats for us to get those runs on the board early. But we have to give Mercer credit because they pitched really well after that point to hold us in check.
