The fourth-seeded Lady Bisons open conference tournament play Thursday afternoon in Kennesaw, Georgia against the fifth-seeded Stetson Hatters. In head coach Lauren Sumski’s first season, Lipscomb is coming off of one of their best seasons in recent memory, going undefeated at home for the first time in the program’s Division-I era. The Bisons enter the tournament with their highest seeding since the 2017-2018 campaign when they fell in the semifinals to the FGCU Eagles. A huge reason for the Bisons’ success is senior ASUN second-team senior forward Taylor Clark, who is averaging 12.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for Lipscomb. Clark has been a leader on and off the court, and her versatility makes her an integral part of everything the Bisons do. Joining Clark as an ASUN honoree is freshman Jordan Peete, who has already made a huge impact with Lipscomb in her first season, averaging 9.3 points per game. For Lipscomb to advance, they will need to rely on Clark and Peete, as well as sophomore stalwarts Casey Collier and Jalyn Holcomb. Thursday afternoon Lipscomb will “host” the Stetson Lady Hatters in the one-site tournament location at Kennesaw State University. This new format was introduced to minimize travel in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 but will allow teams to have more consistency in between matchups. The Lady Bisons are going to have quite a challenge hoping to clinch the automatic NCAA tournament bid. Due to COVID-19 safe play policies, Lipscomb’s baseball team announced the cancellation of six games on their schedule. The games include a midweek matchup at Austin Peay that was scheduled to be played on Tuesday, March 2nd; a four-game weekend series versus Kansas that was scheduled to be played Friday, March 5th – Monday, March 8th; and a midweek matchup against Belmont on Wednesday, March 10th. This is the second year in a row that the home series against Kansas has been canceled due to COVID. Softball’s Battle of the Boulevard matchup on the 10th is still scheduled to be played. As of now, the Bisons are on track to travel to Georgia for a three-game series against the Bulldogs and to Auburn for a midweek matchup against the Tigers before returning home to host Kennesaw State in their ASUN opener. Coming off of a weekend split against Jacksonville last weekend, the Bisons sat at 7-5 coming into their last home weekend seeking a win in the first game of the series against Kennesaw State. The Bisons won, 76-62. Kennesaw coming in with their first conference win of the season the previous weekend against Stetson was looking to keep their momentum against Lipscomb. The first half was an even duel for both teams with nearly identical stat lines through the first 20 minutes of play. In the first half, Asadullah hit solid from the field and the free-throw line. A healthy performance from Jake Wolfe and Mr. Consistent, Romeo Ferguson helped the Bisons in the first half. However, it was Kennesaw who was up at the half 35-36. Backed by solid play from #3, Youngblood, with 12 points that matched Asadullah’s first-half mark. 11 first-half turnovers are what kept the game as close as it was. After the halftime break, Lipscomb came back out re-energized and looking fired-up. With a pristine night’s finish for Asadullah (23 points) and continual effort from Johnson, Ferguson, and Wolfe — the Bisons finished the game out handily, 76-62. Lipscomb finished the game seeing 4 players score in double figures — Johnson (16), Ferguson (13), Wolfe (12), Asadullah (23). It was just the win Lipscomb needed to move the Bisons to 8-5 in Conference play. Lipscomb and Kennesaw State will finish their series matchup on Saturday night in Allen Arena at 7 PM. Lipscomb (4-13, 1-3) was unable to even its conference record, blowing an eight-point lead to Kennesaw State (7-7, 1-2) in the loss on Monday night. Both teams’ defenses played strong in the early minutes of the game, forcing turnovers and bad shots, to keep scoring slow. However, Lipscomb’s junior forward Taylor Clark was able to find her way to the basket and establish herself, scoring five of the Lady Bisons’ first seven points. The first half was a sloppy one. Five minutes into the game, the teams had combined for a total of eight turnovers. Lipscomb was able to improve on that front. Kennesaw State was not and finished the quarter with eight total turnovers and the half with 13, including several travelling violations. Despite this difference, much of the half was very close. Kennesaw State was able to keep the Lady Bisons’ leading scorer, freshman guard Jalyn Holcomb, in check. She had only four points in the half. The Bisons were also severely outrebounded throughout much of the first half, by a margin of 20-10 by its end. Lipscomb was finally able to put a scoring run together in the late stages of the second quarter, going on a 14-3 run and leading by as much as eight, the largest lead of the game to that point. Freshman guard Casey Collier and a couple key 3-pointers from sophomore guard Taylor Hammack led the charge for the Lady Bisons. The Lipscomb Bisons opened there 2020 home slate on Thursday night hosting ASUN opponent, Kennesaw State in their third conference game of the year. Despite a late comeback attempt by the Owls, the Bisons were able to pull away with a 73-85 victory behind senior guard Michael Buckland’s career-high 25 points and redshirt sophomore center Ahsan Asadullah’s career-high 28 points. “For about 34 minutes, I thought we played really, really well – some of our best play offensively. We went 13-26 from the 3-point line; the reason we did that is that we moved the ball,” said Lipscomb head coach Lennie Acuff. The two teams played competitively for much of the first half with both sides going on scoring runs, however, it was the Bisons who went into halftime with the lead 31-39, due to several key defensive stops. “I can come in as a senior and demand that defensive mentality from the younger guys. Because that’s where we are going to get conference wins,” Buckland said. “We are going to get scouted, offense is going to be stagnant at times, and so when it does get stagnant you have to be able to make stops on the defensive end.” Coming out of the half, Lipscomb got off to a hot start and began to take control of the game, leading by 20 points with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
