Paint will be flying and music will be pounding Friday night when Lipscomb’s Student Government Association hosts the first-ever “Paint the Herd.” The paint party — also referred to as a paint rave — will be held from 11:30 p.m. Friday until 1:30 a.m. Saturday on the bottom level of the new parking garage. DJ Potamus will be on the ones and twos while students dance and sling paint on each other and the well-covered and protected surfaces of the emptied garage. Students are excited about the music as well as the paint. “I have never heard DJ Potamus,” said freshman Courtney Himes. “But I’ve heard he is the bomb-diggity. I think that his music will make this paint party even better and I cant wait to hear him.” Paint, paint suits and refreshments will be provided by SGA. Students are urged to bring goggles or sunglasses to avoid getting paint in their eyes. Another perk that is designed to get more students involved is that the freshman curfew, normally 1 a.m. on the weekend, will be extended to 2 a.m. Admission will be $2 for Lipscomb students and $5 for non-Lipscomb students. Long-sleeve black t-shirts are available for $10 and get you into the party for free. “I have been to paint raves before and am so excited that Lipscomb is doing one,” said Kelli Blackshear. “I hope it tops the ones I’ve been to before. My friends and I can’t wait for this...

After transferring to Lipscomb from Georgia his sophomore year, Jackson Sprayberry immediately started making changes here on campus. “I decided to transfer here to Lipscomb because I wanted to grow closer to God through my education,” said Jackson. “That simply wasn’t happening at Georgia.” Jackson is a senior political science major from Chickamauga, Ga., with aspirations to become a social justice lawyer. One of his favorite things to do is shop at thrift stores where nearly half of his clothes came from. In high school, he was the president of his class all four years and went on to serve as a Senator-at-large at UGA. Last year at Lipscomb he served as Vice-President of SGA and is currently the SGA President. He also served on Quest Team this past summer and is currently a resident assistant in the Village. If you enjoy the Lipscomb movie channel and more open visitation hours, you have Jackson to thank for that. He also suggested offering sushi upstairs in the Bison Café. His immediate concern is starting a better recycling program on campus. “It’s great that we have sustainable buildings and hybrid parking spots, but I’d like to be a part of the process,” Sprayberry said. “What I’ve heard from dozens of students is they’d like to be a part of that process as well.” He is also pushing for the library to stay open 24/7. He wants to students to have a “safe, quiet space to study throughout the night.” Jackson is extremely dedicated to Lipscomb and wants to make it a better place. “Lipscomb is a community that grants me the...

The Student Government Association has revamped its opportunities for freshmen. This year is the debut of the Freshman Leadership Council, the first opportunity for incoming students to become active in Lipscomb’s SGA. The purpose of the Freshman Leadership Council is to allow freshmen to be trained to be leaders on Lipscomb’s campus, not just for SGA, but all facets of leadership. The council members shall also serve as the voice of the freshmen class of Lipscomb University in the Senate, acting as freshmen senators. There are five positions available, but there are other opportunities to be active in SGA as well. The position does have some requirements. One must have a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher and then attend the SGA Retreat on August 27-28, 2010. During the school year, the student is responsible for attending weekly meetings on Tuesdays beginning at 7:00 p.m. and completing one office hour each week in the Student Government Office. The due dates coincide with the freshman orientation schedule, so be sure to know what Advance is coming up. The due dates are: the second Advance is noon on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010, and the third Advance is noon on Tuesday, August 17th, 2010. Also, the SGA created a website to keep the student body up to date on their activity as well as a hub for senators and council members. Visit the website and apply for Freshman Leadership...

On Monday April 5, the Student Government Association welcomed Emily Eldridge to present the Gary Chapman request. Eldridge spoke to students about the power of an idea and how it can mobilize people to accomplish amazing things. She discussed topics from Harry Truman and the media, to the passing of environmental laws in the government all because of someone’s powerful ideas. Students were encouraged to always keep in mind, while working in government, what the American people care about. These suggestions and ideas can be used to help better the SGA of Lipscomb and the students that make up the student body. Other topics discussed at the meeting were the upcoming elections for the new executive officers of Lipscomb’s SGA, The Bachelor of Ugliness and Miss Lipscomb Nominations and the American Red Cross blood drive on campus. SGA is constantly striving to make the Lipscomb experience better. From influencing policy change like open-visitation, to fighting for capital investments like recycling, to voting on money requests by campus organizations, SGA is looking for students who want to help improve the campus. Voting for the new executive office began online on Wednesday, April 7th at midnight and continued until Thursday April 8th at midnight. Senate elections will begin next week. SGA is also partnering with the American Red Cross in a blood drive on April 7th and 8th. The donation center will be in the student activities center from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. All students are encouraged to go to the American Red Cross website and make an appointment to donate. Follow the link to watch video coverage of Monday...
