SGA President Patrick Grace has confirmed a few major developments for Lipscomb students, including a potential breakthrough in the long-awaited possibility of off-campus dining. To start, Grace confirmed that there will indeed be a spring concert taking place this semester. “We have a spring concert. It should be in the middle of March,” Grace said. “We’ve got a band kind of in agreement in principle.” Grace says that SGA will make an announcement next week as to who will be playing as soon as it’s set in stone. The spring concert has long been a successful tradition at Lipscomb, with singer-songwriter Mat Kearney headlining the show last spring. Alongside the spring concert, the SGA will help sponsor a new edition of Tokens, a show founded by campus’ Dr. Lee Camp on March 7 in Alumni Auditorium. SGA is planning to release tickets for free to the student body. Grace described the show as “sort of a theological, variety, folk music radio broadcast.” SGA will be holding auditions for a student act to play during the show on Friday, Feb. 15, in the afternoon. The tryouts will be held in Ward Hall. “I’m looking forward to [the auditions] because we’ve got some real talent on campus,” Grace said. Off-campus meal plan in negotiations, could be ready for fall semester The SGA president said he and Dr. Scott McDowell,Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Campus Life, have been in negotiations with Sodexo and human resources to potentially create a plan that would allow for Lipscomb students to use their dining plan at off-campus locations. As we near the end of October, Halloween isn’t the only thing on the mind of Lipscomb students. Paint the Herd was Friday night and, as predicted by many, was a major success. The Student Government Association sponsors Paint the Herd each year in the lower level of the Allen Arena West parking garage on the last Friday of October. This was the third year that SGA has sponsored the event. Paint the Herd allows students to spend several hours together as a community partying, singing and throwing paint at one another. One of Lipscomb’s own students served as deejay of the event, and the crowd’s approval of his skills was overwhelming. And, unlike in years past, SGA brought out the paint early, nearly as soon as a majority of the partygoers were in the basement of the parking garage. For a $5 cover charge, students were able to be involved in one of the biggest events of the fall semester. Here are some of the highlights. Lipscomb has more than 400 faculty members, each with an area of expertise and life experiences that shape what they bring to the classroom. While we at Lumination believe that Lipscomb’s entire faculty provides something special for our campus and its students, we’ve created a list of a few people who we believe would be especially beneficial for students to know during their time at the college. Tenielle Buchanan Mrs. Buchanan is the associate dean of students for intercultural development and the staff adviser for Kappa Iota Theta, the multicultural student organization on campus. She also serves as adjunct professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism and the LU seminar series. tenielle.buchanan@lipscomb.edu Campus Ministry team Jason Parker, Keela Evans, Caroline Morris and Jake Burton are all a part of the Campus Ministry team, who help coordinate chapel and serve as spiritual mentors for students. You only live once. This seems to be the common term used on campus these days. As cliché as it is, there is truth that comes from it. We only live once, and we are only in college once. Why not make it the best it could possibly be? That is simply the reason I am running for president. I’ve been a student here for three years. I have tried to experience just about everything that’s happened on campus. I’ve made so many meaningful relationships with students and faculty; I wouldn’t trade them for anything. I simply want every student to have the best year on campus they have ever experienced. A lot of you might ask how I am going to make that happen? Well, there is something wrong with that question. The question should be, how are WE going to make that happen? I think there is a slight misconception with role of the student government president. It is not a pedestal to sit on while just changing a few policies to make the students content. I believe that the president is a bridge that connects us to people and resources that can make our ideas a reality. I want to be that bridge so that every student can contribute to making next year an absolute blast. I’ve already heard some great suggestions from many of you, and I am eager to hear from any and every one of you that has an idea. Last question.
