When students return for the fall semester, they will notice a lot of new attractions on campus. Over the summer, many construction teams will be hard at work to build several new projects. Kim Chaudoin, Director of Communication and Marketing, shed some light on each of the sites of construction and renovation. The first thing one might notice when walking through Bison Square will be the new Osman Fountain. Built to honor the Memory of Ty Osman II, a Harding student who died in a car accident last year, the fountain will also feature a baptistry. “We thought it was just a really fitting thing to have because our student’s faith is such an important part of what we do here at Lipscomb,” Chaudoin said. “Dr. Lowry has a vision of this being a place where if students decide they want to commit their life to Christ that they might come here and be baptized, right here in the middle of campus.” Students and faculty in the field of sciences can look forward to a new pharmacy and health sciences research facility, which will be located behind the McFarland building. The 15,000 square foot addition will include classrooms, labs and offices. “It’s our intent that just about any student that studies sciences will go through here at least once during their studies,” Chaudoin said. “We’re on target to finish by fall semester, so students should be able to use it soon.” At the Swang building, students are going to return to a new auditorium in Swang 108. “No Day But Today,” the Singarama act composed of members of Delta Omega, Delta Xi, Gambda Lambda, Kappa Xi, Sigma Iota Delta and friends, swept this year’s competition awards, including claiming the highly coveted sweepstakes award. In its fiftieth year, Singarama took on the Timeless theme, with Yesterday, Today and Forever as the show’s group themes. The Today group took home the program’s top prize. During their Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows, the act, directed by senior David Grayson, won the theme, music and staging prizes before taking overall sweepstakes award on Saturday night. The winning act followed a family of four on a detoured vacation into a Southern town celebrating the arrival of a famous basketball player. The performance featured the group’s renditions of “Perfect Day,” “Mountain Music,” “Bring Me to Life,” “Payphone,” “Larger than Life,” “Seize the Day,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Finale B.” Grayson shared his excitement in the group’s big sweepstakes win Saturday evening. “We’re all pretty excited,” Grayson said. “We worked really hard to put the show together, and it’s had a great outcome.” The director of the winning show said he felt that the musical selection stood out. “I think the song selection was the best part of our show,” Grayson said. “Just the songs, and the quality and how our songs told a story is what I was most proud of from our show.” On Friday night, Grayson shared some thoughts about the group’s win in the music category, saying that the crowd’s reaction meant more to him than the awards. “I thought our energy maybe wasn’t as much as we could’ve given...

The Lipscomb Bisons men’s basketball team played their only exhibition game of the season on Thursday against Freed Hardeman, defeating the Lions 99-84 in a match-up that served as a preview for the upcoming season. This was the 99th meeting between the Lipscomb and Freed Hardeman men’s basketball teams. Former NAIA rivals, the Bisons now lead the Lions 76-23 in the series. The Bisons have played the Lions in an exhibition game every year since entering the NCAA (excluding the 2010-2011 season). Redshirt freshmen center Stephen Hurt led the Bisons in scoring and rebounds with 21 points and 12 rebounds. He also had two assists and was six for seven on free-throws. Hurt believes that the Bisons were dominant on the offensive side of the ball. “I thought we played a really good game offensively. We’ve been working on our offense since we started practice. I think it’s working really good.” Hurt said. Hurt also believes that the team still has plenty of room to grow as the season progresses. “Defensively, we’ve got a lot to fix, but I think, you know, it’s the first game of the season and we can’t expect too much,” Hurt said. “It will come together as the season goes along.” Junior center Oscar Garcia scored the first two points of the game and led the team in assists with 4. Senior Deonte Alexander followed Hunt in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore forwards Malcom and Martin Smith both had 11 points, as did freshmen guard J.C. Few people outside the fashion bubble here at Lipscomb realize that the campus has a clothing lab. Perhaps it is because our fashion students are a small portion of the student body. Maybe it is due to its nearly-hidden location. To many, the clothing lab is one of campus’ best kept secrets. Alex Barry, a senior double majoring in fashion industry and textiles and apparel, is the co-president for Rho Xo Delta, Lipscomb’s fashion club. “It’s not one of those places you just stumble on,” she said, referencing the location. The clothing lab is down the hall from the computer center in the basement of the Beaman Library. “If you’re not looking for it, you won’t find it,” Barry said. Several classes actually take place in the clothing lab. These classes include Clothing Construction I and II, Art Applied to Everyday Life, Professional Orientation for Fashion Majors, Interior Fabrications and Flat Pattern Design. Sissy Simmons, a fashion professor, teaches Clothing Construction I and Art Applied to Everyday Life. According to Simmons, the Clothing Construction I class “uses every aspect of the lab.” The students use the tables when she is lecturing, the sewing equipment and cutting tables when sewing, the storage space for projects and supplies, the mannequins to display finished looks and the great selection of fabrics to make these looks. Professor Simmons also uses the Halston drawings and donated garments in the lab as references throughout her classes. Independent coffee shops are becoming as ubiquitous in Nashville as seeing someone wear cowboy boots down lower Broadway. Locally-owned coffee shops are usually within close proximity of college campuses, a benefit to those seeking a boost of java. Coffee, Lunch is no exception. The new coffee hot spot opened last week along 10th Ave. South, adding to Nashville’s already great selection of coffee houses. “Monday couldn’t have been a smoother day,” said co-owner Khalil Davis. “People were trying to get in because they saw people in here. We had a soft opening Aug. 27 for our neighbors above us. Our printed opening date was actually Sept. 4.” Davis said he was encouraged by the warm reception and decided to open a week early. “We started off by doing a 50 percent off everything,” he said. “It worked out fantastic. By Tuesday, we had so many people pulling on the door, trying to get in, we just decided to go for it and see how busy we can get.” As for the naming of the coffee shop, Davis said, “It was a mistake. We couldn’t come up with a name, so when we submitted our business plan, we put coffee, lunch. Once it was reviewed, the name stuck.” Coffee, Lunch is what you’d expect in a coffee house, except with a few twists. For starters, the music selection includes ‘90s underground hip hop but also contemporary indie. For food, you can choose from offerings such as penne pasta and potato salad.
