[Photos] Campus enhancements conclude as students prepare to return

Students will notice some obvious changes to campus when they return in August, as most of the summer enhancement projects wrap up in the next few weeks. Tom Wood, director of campus enhancement, said he thinks the improvements will have “the wow effect.” Besides the addition of Lipscomb’s nursing building on the north side of campus, transformation of the student center will be one of the most major changes students may notice. The university bookstore and Uncle Dave’s have moved to the lower level of the student center in the old Arlo’s location. Auntie Anne’s and Zebi will be in the former bookstore space. There will also be a lounge area with new carpet, booth seating, extra tables and chairs, and a small performance stage in one corner. According to Wood, the food court area will have new floor tiles, and new tables and chairs by the time classes start. “There’s a lot of interior improvements to the student center,” he said. “I think it will be something they will really enjoy. I think there are some great things happening in the student center.” The nursing building is on schedule to be ready for the fall semester, Wood said, and will be an “exciting” thing for the university and the nursing program. “It’s really going to enhance our nursing program tremendously,” he said. “We have 120 nursing students who will be studying in there this fall, so that’s a big improvement over last year’s enrollment in nursing. I think that will continue to grow.” Students living in Elam can look forward to renovations in that dorm. Wood said the rooms...
The Tumbler and Batpod roll into Nashville to promote new Batman movie

The Tumbler and Batpod roll into Nashville to promote new Batman movie

Both committed fans and casual shoppers found a special treat awaiting them in the parking lot of the new Walmart by One Hundred Oaks Mall, Thursday afternoon. Nashville became the day’s stop on The Tumbler Tour, a special showcase featuring two vehicles from The Dark Knight trilogy. The tour is currently promoting the upcoming Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. Fans dressed in Batman attire to greet the vehicles, while other on-lookers also joined in on the fun. Besides getting an exclusive look at some of the most recognizable on-screen wheels in recent cinema, free posters for the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises were made available for those in attendance. A few lucky attendees in Batman regalia were given screening passes for an advance showing of the movie. Those in civilian wear were given a chance to win tickets to the same screening. Some even say that Batman himself graced the event. Jim Johnson, one of the on-site drivers for the vehicles, gets the opportunity to both load and unload the massive Tumbler and Batpod. Johnson said he enjoys getting to see all the fans express their excitement for both the vehicles and upcoming sequel. “It’s pretty nice,” Johnson said. “Everybody gets excited.”  One of Johnson’s on-site duties also involves starting the Tumbler, giving the audience an example of its powerful, roaring engine  – a job Johnson finds “pretty fun.” The Tumbler Tour will continue to venture across the nation in anticipation for The Dark Knight Rises, which hits theaters and IMAX on July 20. Preds fans welcome team back from Detroit just after midnight

Over 120 Nashville Predators fans waited outside of Signature Terminal in the early hours of Wednesday morning to welcome their hockey team back to the city the team calls “Smashville.” Why? Because It’s The Cup. The 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs’ tagline is reason enough for fans to welcome their team back to their hometown at 1 a.m. after a game. However, the team gave the fans more reason to show up Wednesday. When the Predators landed at approximately 12:35 a.m. the team was fresh off two wins at Joe Louis Arena, the arena of the Detroit Red Wings. The two wins put Nashville (3-1) in position to win the series on Friday at their home rink, Bridgestone Arena. Some fans showed up as early as 10:00, knowing the team would not land for at least two more hours. The weather cooperated, but was by no means perfect at a misty, brisk, 52 degrees. The fans waited. Because It’s The Cup. When the team finally walked out the doors of the terminal, the inspired crowd gave each member of the hockey team as well as coaches, staff members and front office people an ovation that sounded like it could have easily came from 501 Broadway instead of 960 Hangar Lane. Why? Because It’s The Cup. Television news crews and folks with iPhones captured the moment when Predators enforcer Brian McGrattan walked through the line of people. Head coach Barry Trotz and his assistants Peter Horacek and Lane Lambert soon followed. The foursome passed out fist-bumps with wide smiles. Other players took an alternate route, dodging the crowd hoping to...

The Smoke Rises: A look inside the Lipscomb Steam Plant

If you have ever walked past High Rise or taken a drive down Granny White, you might notice a booming building with large smokestacks, constantly pouring steam into the sky. Have you ever wondered what goes on inside? The Steam Plant, one of campus’ primary HVAC facilities, serves as an important part of our community. Dave Sutton, the HVAC supervisor on campus, gave me a look inside the Steam Plant, offering some insight into his job and the services offered by the large facility. Sutton, going on eight years as the HVAC supervisor, oversees the Steam Plant, as well as other heat and ventilation facilities on campus. Sutton offered insight on what really goes on inside the Steam Plant. “The main function for serving campus is just to provide heat and domestic hot water during the winter time,” Sutton said. The Steam Plant is made up of different boilers, pumps, tanks and other machines.  A water treatment facility also finds its home in the Steam Plant. Modern advances in technology have allowed for automatic controls to monitor the boilers. Previously, a coal fire boiler was used to carry out the functions the current boilers perform. “[The boilers] used to have to be manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Now, we just do controls. We only have to check [the controls] twice a shift,” Sutton said. Sutton must remain vigilant with his job in case of any on-campus emergencies regarding utilities. “I’m pretty much on call 24/7, so I’ve been called in here numerous times in the middle of the night. When a boiler goes down or...
