MACON, Ga. – Lipscomb’s Mollie Mitchell recorded her third Atlantic Sun Softball Player of the Week award and second on the season after batting .800 for the week (4-for-5), with one home run and five RBIs, while Jacksonville’s Ashley Iveson recorded a 0.47 ERA and struck out 17 batters, while holding opponents to a .115 batting average in 15 innings of work. Mitchell and the Lady Bisons closed out the A-Sun portion of their regular season with a pair of wins at Belmont by a combined 28-1 tally and finish league play with a mark of 18-2. Mitchell, a native of Suwanee, Ga., posted a three-run homer, her fourth of the season, in the 20-1 win Wednesday against the Lady Bisons’ Music City rival. The sophomore holds a streak of 343.2 consecutive innings behind the plate for Lipscomb. Against Kennesaw State, Iveson set the new Jacksonville single season record in wins with her 16th victory after scattering two hits and fanning 12 batters to earn her seventh complete-game shutout of the season. The Kissimmee, Fla. native’s 12 strikeouts also tallied her sixth double-digit strikeout effort of the season, setting a new single-season record. Iveson allowed one run on four hits and four strikeouts in the game one loss at Mercer, but bounced back with two strikeouts in two scoreless relief frames in game two to help JU get the win. The Lady Bisons split with the University of Albama at Birmingham on Tuesday, winning 1-0 and losing 7-5. Video: Whitney Kiihnl on Lipscomb News Lipscomb entered the game with a RPI ranking of 39, UAB was just in front of the Lady Bisons, ranked 38th. As seen in game one, the teams would show one another why they were ranked in consecutive positions. In the first game of the afternoon, the Lady Bisons scored their one and only run of the game via an Abby Keese single that scored senior Lauren Dortwegt. Dortwegt reached base on an error. Lipscomb was blanked for the rest of the game, but sophomore pitcher Whitney Kiihnl made the Lipscomb side feel alright about it. Kiihnl pitched her fifth perfect game of the season, bringing her record to 25-2. The shutout was her 11th of the season. Overall, it was Lipscomb’s 24th shutout of the season. Kiihnl would strike out 10 en route to the win. Game one’s box score can be viewed here. Game two started out completely different for Lipscomb. The Lady Bisons found themselves down 3-0 early on in the game when Christen Campbell allowed three runs on four hits in the first. Lipscomb answered back quickly, though, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second to tie it at 3-3. Courtney Billington scored off of a Christen Campbell double. The Lady Bison softball team tallied two wins (4-1, 6-0) on Saturday, defeating Florida Gulf Coast 4-1 and 6-0. The wins lifted Lipscomb to 14-2 in the A-Sun and 37-9 overall.In game one the Lady Bisons got on board quickly, just as they have all season. Courtney Billington singled to bring in Lauren Dortwegt to put Lipscomb up 1-0 early on. In the third inning the Lady Bisons capitalized on a FGCU error, scoring three runs to bring the score to 4-0. Pitcher Whitney Kiihnl struck out a season high 17 hitters, getting her 24th win of the year. Game one’s box score can be viewed here. In game two Lipscomb pitcher Alaina Jacobson earned her third shutout of the year. Lipscomb would find out that the fourth inning would be their inning in game two. Abby Keese homered, her 12th of the season. She is only two away from her tying career high of 14 that she set last season. Lipscomb would go on to score 5 more runs in that inning to bring the score to 6-0. Courtney Billington and Whitney Kiihnl each had two hits in the game. Lauren Dortwegt also had two RBIs. The Lady Bisons added two more wins to their total on Friday, sweeping the Stetson Hatters in a double header. Lipscomb defeated Stetson 5-0 in game one and 1-0 in game two. Going into Friday night the Lady Bisons knew that the double header against Stetson would be a pivotal one. Leading the Atlantic Sun by three games, Lipscomb did not want second place Stetson to gain any ground whatsoever. The Lady Bisons did just that, shutting out the Hatters in both games. Whitney Kiihnl pitched a complete game one-hitter to improve her record to 23-2 on the season. This was also her ninth shutout of the season. Abby Keese, the leading hitter for the A-Sun, and Kellie Sirus, slugging percentage leader for the A-Sun, both homered for the Lady Bisons. Lauren Dortwegt and Christen Campbell each added two hits a piece for Lipscomb. Sirus, along with her home run, had 4 RBIs in game one. Game one’s box score can be viewed here. Game two of the evening would result in a shutout as well, this time though because of pitcher Christen Campbell. Shutting out Stetson, the Lady Bisons’ lone run would come courtesy of a solo home run from Courtney Billington. This was Billington’s fourth home run of the season.
