After growing up in South Africa, Mignonne Bryant finds family and opportunities in Nashville

Sophomore Mignonne Bryant is a student of many talents who has a unique perspective of Lipscomb and Nashville. Bryant is originally from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Having lived in Brentwood for three years, Bryant enjoys Nashville’s status as “Music City.” “I am a singer, songwriter and musician. Music is in my genes,” Bryant said.  “My dad’s songs played on South African radio for a while.” Bryant began writing music when she was very small and has not stopped. “I love sharing my gift with others,” Bryant said. Bryant said she also enjoys the city’s hospitality and abundance of opportunities. “I love the people. Everyone is so friendly. Also, there are a lot of opportunities in this city,” Bryant said. “Nashville is the place to be.” Bryant attends Lipscomb along with her sister Kate. “It’s fantastic going to school with her,” Bryant said. “We are really good friends despite the fact that we are as different as chalk and cheese.” Bryant is a New Media and Journalism student while her sister is pursuing a different career. “Even though we are pursuing different careers, it is great to be doing so together at Lipscomb,” Bryant said. Bryant is considering working for a newspaper, magazine or going into broadcasting after college, even though nothing is set in stone. “To be honest, though, I am still finding my way,” Bryant said. While attending Lipscomb, Byrant says she has enjoyed the resident Starbucks and campus’ familial atmosphere. “Oh man, Starbucks is my favorite,” Bryant said. “I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t order my tall Earl Grey tea! Local coffeehouses delight Lipscomb students

Within five minutes of Lipscomb alone, there’s the Frothy Monkey, Bongo Java, The Perch, Starbucks, The Well and Fido. The campus is almost surrounded by coffee shops. And there are plenty more, with new ones opening seemingly every week or so in and around Nashville. The number of shops makes it easy to jump around from place to place, but there is something about the familiar look, feel and taste of a coffee shop that lures people into going back again and again. For some, it’s the atmosphere that makes them a loyal customer. For others it is the location. Here’s a sampling of three that Lipscomb students have visited and recommend. Brianna Langley, a freshman communications major from Knoxville, finds a favorite in Cafe Coco at 210 Louise Avenue, down near Centennial Park and the Exit/In. “They are open 24-7, which is unique,” Langley said. “They’re also like a bar-slash-restaurant-slash-live-music venue, so they’re more than just a coffee shop. And the atmosphere is so different there. You can go at any time and see all walks of life.” For other students, coffee shops are all about the basics – the taste and quality of the coffee itself. “The Well is great,” said Mackenzie Carter, sophomore youth ministry major from Huntsville, Ala. “I go for coffee there more for the taste than the atmosphere, because if I have homework, it’s easier just to go to the Starbucks on campus.” The Well is an easy desination for Lipscomb students as itis located at 2035 Richard Jones Road in Green Hills. ‘Coffee House’ provides hearty brew of student music

Lipscomb University is filled with students with poetic voices and passions to perform. And that’s what inspired the  Student Government Association to establish the Coffee House series. After students arrive at Lipscomb, they discover this unique “study break” opportunity. Every Thursday night starting at 10:30, a student, or a group, performs for an audience of fellow students. Their set lasts for about an hour, and the entertainers have the freedom to play original songs, covers or a combination of the two. The student performers provide the entertainment and SGA provides the coffee. The event is held in the Starbucks on campus. During the hourlong performances, SGA picks up the tab for the students’ drinks. However, if they want to enjoy a free drink they are limited to a tall-sized coffee, hot chocolate or caramel apple spice. The SGA created Coffee House for a number of different reasons. They wanted to provide a free outlet for students to express themselves, but also wanted to encourage on-campus community and support for fellow students. Sophomore Brandon Carver has attended many of the events and will be performing with a friend later in the semester. He with many other students, regularly attend Coffee House because of the inviting atmosphere. “I go to Coffee House to support my fellow Lipscomb students,” he said. “I love the casual, easygoing atmosphere and listening to good music. You can’t refuse free coffee either.” Zach Brantley, a junior at Lipscomb, performed at Coffee House recently with two other students, Lincoln Mick and Ethan Johnson.
