With chilly temperatures blowing in Tuesday night, baseball fell to the Belmont Bruins in a midweek game 2-1. Both teams earned 4 hits but Belmont connected a leadoff walk with a double by Drew Ferguson to open the scoring in the third inning. Ferguson would later score on a single up the middle by Matt Beaty. Belmont did not score again for the rest of the game but their pitching kept Lipscomb to only one run which they earned later in the sixth inning. Senior catcher Nick Rome led the Bisons on the night going 2-for-3 with two singles. Although only giving up one earned run, Freshman John Pryor takes the loss on the game. As far as pitching for the Bisons, Coach Jeff Forehand tells Lipscomb Athletics, “Pryor was pretty sharp for the most part. Jamie (Young) came in and got us out of that big jam in the seventh and then Curtis came on and pitched a good eighth and ninth for us.” The Bruins’ hill saw six different pitchers on the day but Chase Cunningham took the win for Belmont. The dedication of Smith Stadium had the Lipscomb softball team hitting their stride, winning three in a row this weekend against the Mercer Bears at Draper Diamond. The softball stadium was officially dedicated to Michael Smith and his son Derek Smith, who are owners of Rio Grande Fence Company. The Smiths are heavily active in the softball program, giving the university one of the best fields in the Atlantic Sun Conference, if not nationally. The field was dedicated to the Smiths after the 9-1 blowout win against Mercer on Saturday afternoon, and right before the 5-4 win that took eight innings to get it done. Their streak continued on Sunday when they hosted Mercer for the third and final game, and after trailing 1-0, they forced extra innings yet again and senior infielder Kelsey Cartwright drove in the winning run. “Well, yesterday, [Mercer’s pitcher] was jamming me a lot, so I was expecting more in, but the pitch before was out,” Cartwright said. “Thankfully, Paige [Neely] got on to even give me the opportunity, but they came back again with the outside, and I was able to luckily get a hit up the middle.” Neey, the junior infielder who scored the winning run, also contributed heavily on both sides of the ball all weekend for the team. She said both sides were needed in each win. “Their team definitely kept us motivated, Neely said. “They were scratching and clawing, and we just had a motivation to not let them win and that went from defense to offense.” The weekend sweep puts the Lady Bisons at 34-9 overall and 14-6...

Allen Arena hosted another exciting game on Thursday night as the Bisons’ basketball team topped Florida Gulf Coast University 92-71 with the help of sharp 3-point shooting. From the tip-off, the Eagles of FGCU scored two points to lead 2-0, but the Bisons answered, scoring six straight three-pointers. From there, Lipscomb never looked back, leading by 20 at the half. Bisons head coach Casey Alexander said that the shooting helped lead the team to victory. “We shot the ball great the whole night, and making our first six was a huge lift for us…confidence wise, and we held the lead from there,” Alexander said. In the second half, the Bisons cooled off, but they stayed consistent and continued to be aggressive, take shots and most importantly, make the shots. In total, Lipscomb scored fifteen three’s, six from junior forward Martin Smith, one from senior guard/forward Khion Sankey, three from freshman guard Josh Williams and three from redshirt freshman guard J.C. Hampton. Martin Smith and Hampton tied for 21 points to lead the team. Junior forward Malcolm Smith and sophomore guard Talbott Denny also scored double digits with 20 points and 11, respectively. As good as the shooting was, Alexander said that the perimeter shooting was not necessarily part of the plan on Thursday. “We just took the shots that came to us,” Alexander said. “We didn’t come out here trying to shoot a lot of three’s; that wasn’t really part of the game plan.” FGCU responded to Lipscomb’s shooting, as junior guard Brett Comer lead the charge with 27 points. The Lady Bisons played their best defensive game of the year but came out short against number one, Florida Gulf Coast University. The beginning of the game was a slow start for both teams offensively, but ultimately the Bisons jumped out on top leading by as many as ten in the first half. What started as a pretty even game at the half slowly tilted in favor of the Eagles landing the final score at 67-85. “We didn’t come out with the same defensive intensity and they knocked down some shots and made us pay for it,” said junior Ashley Southern who marked her 15 double-double of the year. The women were not only up against the number one team in the conference but the number nine team in the nation in 3-pointers per game at 9.2. The Bisons gave up 13 of them to FGCU in their 38 attempts. Junior Sara Bliss came out aggressive in her role with six rebounds, three assists and multiple tips. Bliss fought hard for balls forcing at least two jump balls. “I’m definitely a shooter, they tell me to shoot it all the time, but as one of the older players with more experience, I need to bring the leadership asset to the game as well,” Bliss said. Bliss, Southern, Danay Fothergill, Kelli Smith and Chandler Cooper were the starters for the Bison and accounted for all but four points. Before the semester becomes too overloaded with events and calendars gets completely booked, Lumination would like to offer a handy guide to all of the events coming up during the fall semester. September looks to bring a full slate of men’s and women’s soccer games. Pledge week also kicks off in September as Bid Night took place Sept. 12. Some of Lipscomb’s most anticipated events begin in October starting with the Tau Phi Cowboy show on Oct. 5, Paint the Herd on Oct. 30 and Haunted High Rise scaring students on Oct. 30. The women’s volleyball schedule kicks into high gear during October as well. Lipscomb’s annual Dodgeball tournament will start November off with a bang. The men’s basketball team will open up their season against Belmont with the Battle of the Boulevard against rival Belmont on Nov. 8, followed by the women’s Battle less than a week later on Nov. 14. Everything from sporting events across all sports to special Student Activities Board sponsored events, to usual favorites like Wednesday Night We Eat are taking place throughout the next few months, making Lipscomb’s campus a busy place. All sporting events take place at Lipscomb University unless otherwise noted.
